Are you going to make a trip by car from Sao Paulo to Belo Horizonte? O Frango

Caipira is delicious way to break up the monotony of the journey. Situated about half way between the two capitols, the small and charmingly decorated restaurant sits 100 meters up the hillside from Rodovia Fernão Dias and offers a surprisingly quiet and relaxing atmosphere for travelers. If you are trying to avoid the larger road stops that target buses and trucks as they are typically crowded places with fast food and impersonal service. O Frango Caipira breaks away from that mold by offering a uniquely Mineiro atmosphere and food that surprises with its freshness and generous portions. If you usually travel with your dog, and iit is a priority for you to find places along the way where he can get out of the car and stretch his legs a bit. O Frango Caipira, with its large and beautifully landscaped surroundings is perfect for him and he can even sit with the owners at the restaurants rustic wooden outdoor tables which wrap around the patio. The decorations remind me of a traditional Minas farmhouse and the birds fluttering about and singing in the trees add to the idyllic feel of the place. Inside, a collection of local products ranging from cachaça to cheese and honey await. In my visits to O Frango Caipira I have tried the sandwiches as well as the delicious meals. If you're not prepared to eat a full meal, the sandwiches are a great option. The Gordinho is stuffed with a healthy portion of sausage and goes great with the fresh squeezed orange juice. In season, opt for the strawberry juice for a special treat. A lighter alternative is the Natural, a sandwich with queijo mineiro, lettuce, and grated carrots served on a standard pão frances. For a larger appetite, the Frango Caipira lunch will satisfy even the hungriest of travelers. This option would easily feed two people, although it is listed as a prato individual. The lunch is served as a collection of earthenware dishes filling up the table which hold the standard spread of rice, beans, salad, collard greens, and angu. We sampled the chicken with molho pardo, a rich brown sauce thickened with blood, and the chicken with the traditional sauce, a flavorful broth which reminded me of Mom's homemade chicken soups of my childhood. The lunch will let you completely satisfied, ready to return to the open road with a full belly. The waiters are friendly and warm hearted. It is like going to a small Minas town. Parking is abundant in the gravel lot and many of the spots are shaded by the numerous lovely trees. It is worth taking a few minutes after your meal to walk around the property to see the small fish pond and pleasant landscaping.
