POULTRY DISEASES MANAGEMENT PRINCIPLES
__________________________

Poultry industry has its challenges which at times cripple the efforts of farmers in commercialising production especially with long kept breeds which are indigenous like type, to be precise the exotic breeds that include breeds like Australorp , Light Sussex, Bramah , Orpington , SASSO and many others .
At times we wonder why these breeds rarely suffer from diseases when let to roam around than when housed. The reason is that under intensive breeding systems the animals tend to be confined and due mainly to poor management principles as farmers we bring in deaseses to the flocks in many ways namely :- through low standards of bio-security some of which we don't observe footbathing which among factors is a cause of importing a lot of deaseses by visiting other farms, step on deasesed manure in those farms and come back to our farms to spread it. More of this will be discussed deeper in our next series .
For now we look at simple things that matter which we include good and poor stockman ship .
A farmer must develop a habit of being around his or her livestock to observe their behaviors that can lead to ascertaining that animals are in good health or some signs of deaseses are showing and be delt with at early stages before reaching unmanageable levels.
A farmer must observe how animals eat , drink and walk around. Less of these actions can sometimes be a sign of something bad coming up

Look at the colour of droppings (p**p) all the times and many times in a day so as to be able detect bad signs. Diarrhea, can be caused by change of diet or feed composition but also it can signal some deaseses that are starting. The earlier the disease is observed the best the chances of dealing with it.

Look at the eyes of your flock. They should be bright and alert.

Look at the feathers . They should not be ruffled but shiny and bright.
Look at the way a chicken stands .
Stay tuned for more in the next part

FACTORS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING CHICKENS FROM ANOTHER FARMER continued
-----------------------------------
closely look at the nose of the chicken for discharges
Discharges from chicken nose are a sign of a deadly infection likely to be Infectious Coryza
Therefore is not advisable to buy chickens with such symptoms

Closely check the beak ( mouth) for discharges or sticky saliva
If you notice sticky stuff around that will dried over time due to sticky saliva thus not a good sign
If you hold the chicken with both feet with its head hanging down then slippery saliva oozes out of the beak (mouth) that spells danger
Check for eye discharges ,if the eyes show discharges that is sign of danger

Check wattles and comb , if they are wounds then something is wrong. Combs and wattles should be bright red and shiny

These are some of the factors to consider when buying chickens from other farmers

FACTORS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING CHICKENS FROM ANOTHER
_________________________
There are times when there is a need to buy chickens from other farmers. There are some factors to take into account:
First and foremost as a farmer you have to be aware that the chickens bought from other farms have two main possible effects, that is to grow your numbers or to wipe all your stock through deaths by bringing an infection from where you buy them, therefore be in the habit of doing the following as a buyer:
Take a visit to the farm when possible and be on the ground . That gives the general impression about the biosecurity practices, general health look of the chickens on the farm.
Arranging chickens to be sent to you through other means without you getting to supplier's farm can be possible but at times can be a dangerous move because you may buy free range chickens from a diseased lot.
You may receive parasite infested chickens and introduce those parasites to your own flock
If you happen to go the farmer's place to buy chickens always avoid talking in buying terms before you get to the farm but let the supplier take it you have interest in having a look at his chickens so that in case you notice something not satisfying about his flock and decide not to buy , then you play it smart by avoiding apologies for not buying after raising hopes for supplier who was looking forward to receiving you as the buyer and things turn out to be something else
If you happen to be at the farm of the supplier check the following about chickens you want to buy:-
Ask about his isolation bay for the sick ones and visit that chicken hospital so as to see the form of a disease showing in those chickens lest you buy ones that look healthy while they are already carriers that do not show any symptoms and infect your flock at your farm through cross-infection
Look at the chickens in general, are they looking healthy and active or they look dull and sick
If they look sick, dont buy
To be continued
