Todayβs goes out to a handful of incredible people and companies that came to our aid at a time where the animals in a remote village desperately needed the help of MAWS.
On the 24th of October 2024, MAWS received an urgent call for help from Anthony, a resident of the Khwai village. Four dogs had been severely injured by lions, and the community's pets were heavily infested with parasites.
Typically, MAWS conducts an annual vaccination drive in the first half of the year. Having visited Khwai village in February 2024, our next scheduled visit was too far off to address the pressing issues the dogs faced.
Our team was ready to step in, but we faced a significant challenge β our vehicles were not equipped to handle the rough terrain leading to Khwai.
Immediately our committee reached out to their contact list and Mack Air generously donated flights to transport two MAWS team members to the Khwai Private Reserve airstrip, where the MmaTsebe Tented Camp team awaited to transport them to the village and assist them throughout the day.
With the invaluable help of Mackair and Mmatsebe Tented Camp, Vasco and Carmen travelled to Khwai on the 29th of October to attend to the dogs in need. Sadly, two of the injured dogs succumbed to their injuries before our team arrived, but we were able to treat the remaining two. Their wounds were cleaned, and they received a course of antibiotics to fight the infection.
The rest of the morning was spent driving around the village, administering parasite treatments. We treated 16 dogs and 2 cats. The dogs received ivomec injections for internal parasites and spot-ons or dips for ticks and fleas, manually removing as many as possible. The cats were given spot-ons for both internal and external parasites.
A heartfelt thank you to Mack Air for the flights and to Mmatsebe Tented Camp for their transportation and support throughout the day, with special mentions to Omo and OT for taking care of the team. We also extend our gratitude to Anthony for reaching out and guiding us through the village to ensure all households with pets were assisted.
