Some days are happy days, some days are sad days...

Today... it was a sad day.

Somewhere.... somewhere in times own space,
There must be some sweet pastured place.
Where creeks sing on and tall trees grow.
Some paradise where donkeys go ...
To run and jump and play with glee
Gallop on little donkey, you now are free.

Sorry little donkey, atleast there's no more suffering.

A severely broken leg and no hope of recovery, we just hope his last hours he knew that people aren't all bad.

To help us in our fight against the suffering, please feel free to volunteer or donate to our cause. We need all the help we can get.

Terri Ann Thornton 2 of your bits were allocated to these 2 hard working donkeys. Pulling an extremely heavy load of water home to their village, i stopped them and tried to make them both a bit more comfortabe (and visible on the roads!)

I explained to their owners the limit of weight a Donkey can pull!

An average donkey of approximately 11 hands high or 160 kg can carry up to 50kg on its back or can pull up to twice its body weight on LEVEL ground.

These donkeys (average size) were carrying a large cart (likely over 250kg) , 5 people (+-300kg) and over 200 litres of water (200kg). This is close to 800kg these donkeys were expected to pull - in a badly harnessed cart through thick sand.

On Saturday we held our CHILDRENS CHARITY RIDE 2024 . We had a wonderful turnout and great fun was had by all who attended!

We had 4 different distance routes, a mini 800m track, 3km, 6km and 9km tracks. The kids did amazingly well and we put to use our dry riverbed before the water (hopefully) fills up!

Well done to all those participants who completed the races, each child recieved a branded cup filled with goodies and a medal (thank you NATCHEM for our goodies and assisting with our printing) and to YM ONLINE MAUN for the awesome branded kiddies cycle socks!

Thank you to our volunteers, marshals, assistants, organizers and all those who turned out to make some much needed funds for MAWS and Equine Assist Maun. We can't do it without your unwavering support.

A few before and after examples of bits taken away and replaced. Pieces of wire, pieces of rope, home made wire bits. Notice how low in the mouth the bits sit, knocking directly onto the horses teeth. Can you imagine a metal bar continually bouncing on your teeth? We tried to explain about bridle fitment and allocated bits where we could - although some were reluctant to hand over their old ones, we only allocated now ones if the old bits were surrendered.

Boro outreach 2024 - horse and donkey day.

A total of 86 animals seen yesterday. 48 horses, 36 donkeys and 2 dogs.

We offered deworming, tick dip, tick grease, wound care advice and allocation of basic wound creams. Hoof care and advice - 3 lame horses with Hoof abcesses were seen to and many others rounded up. We did tack checks, removal of wire and severe bits and allocation of bridles, new bits, headcollars, numnahs, girths, harness padding for cart donkeys.

But mostly our aim was education. Education that assistance is available, please don't just leave these animals to suffer. Education on keeping wounds clean with a basic saline solution. Importance of checking for ticks and removing them.

Please, if you see an animal suffering, be part of the change. If there is nothing you can do to help, atleast try and find someone who can.

Contact MAWS, in horse and donkey cases they will contact Equine Assist Maun and we will do our best to help.

This came up as a memory on my feed from 1 year ago so thought I'd share the story of "Cresta horse".

We heard about this horse collapsed by the river, story was he was hit by a car and then managed to get down to the river where we found him. A group of us worked tirelessly trying to get him up and give him a second chance. If he made it through he had a lovely home secured! We managed to get him up on his feet and had guys watching him 24 hours day incase he fell again - or got eaten by a crocodile. We nursed him for a little over 2 weeks, He was too weak to move with a trailer so treated him where he was.

He got stronger every day and eventually started grazing and walking again. Sadly when we thought things were looking up , he lost sight in both eyes, possibly from head trauma from the accident.

The kindest thing to do was to end his suffering, hopefully he got to know kindness in his last days.

Out of the sadness of not being able to save him, another little soul came into my life who needed help too. And so Gizmo was saved that day too.

Happy 1 year of being with our family Gizzy cat.

Please pass on to those who you feel would benefit from some advice and assistance with their horse or donkey.

This little chap, nicknamed "Sunny" was picked up in Tsanekona (hence the name) over the weekend - thank you to all those who assisted with his rescue ❤️

He is another orphan of the drought, sadly his mom didn't make it. He is being well cared for and is safe and sound for now getting all he needs.

If you would like to contribute towards his recovery please feel free to put into the MAWS account and use the reference - SUNNY HORSE.

Life will get better little guy ❤️

How many cows can you fit in the back of a Jeep Wrangler 😉

This little guy was left stranded, he couldn't keep up with his herd and his mom seemed to have forgotten him! (Mom memory - I totally understand 😂). We drove to some of the surrounding herds we knew are in the area and eventually reunited him with forgetful mom ❤️

08/11/2023

I was told about this little foal lying on the side of the road in the middle of town.

He had severe infection and dehydration as he couldn't stand up to drink from his mom, I managed to track down his owner who understood he needed to be treated and assisted us as we loaded him (and mom) into a trailer and took him to get some help.

It was a long haul for this little guy, he was with me for 2 months and together with the assistance and guidance from our vet he made a great recovery.

I now pass "Lucky" the little red pony most days on my way into town and smile knowing he lives to fight another day.

And we all know to survive in this town you need to be a fighter!

Thank you to those who donated grass and assisted with this rescue.

When you get yourself into a tight spot!

I was called to assist this donkey who had got himself wedged between two containers, by the look of things he had been there all night... however by the time we arrived he had managed to free himself, Luckily unscathed!

During the dry season burrs get stuck in these donkeys fur, imagine the discomfort trying to lie down covered in spiky burrs!

I wanted to introduce you to some of the animals we have worked with over the few years back in Maun.

We do our best to assist where we can and give each animal a fighting chance for a better future.

Meet Donkety... her mamma had sadly consumed plastic bags and after many attempts to save her, she sadly had to be put to sleep.

Baby donkey was taken on by her surrogate mom "Sparkle". The two are inseparable and live a happy life in her new home.
