Bioplastics are a false solution to plastic pollution. Here's why:

1) They don't break down in home composts, only industrial facilities.
2) They use massive amounts of resources to produce - they're mostly derived from corn, which takes up valuable crop land space.
3) If you don't send them to an industrial compost, they act exactly like regular plastic in the natural environment – taking decades to break down.

Say no to bioplastics!

Shout Out to the Belize Forest Department and Belize Bird Rescue!

These four tiny chicks were confiscated by the Belize Forest Department from a poacher. The smallest one had a swollen leg and we were worried he had a fracture but Dr Philip has just confirmed the bone is intact with healing flesh wounds.
We suspect these are red loreds or yellowheads - time will tell for sure.
Great job Forest Dept for picking up on these.

It is with immense sadness in our hearts that The Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center announces the passing of our Founder and very own hero, Sharon Matola.
Sharon passed away at the St. Luke’s Hospital in Belmopan, Belize today March 21st 2021.
While we deeply appreciate the outpouring of love and support that you all would wish to share, we ask for patience, and respect of the privacy of The Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center family, and kindly await our indication of memorial services that will be announced at a later date.

The Shadow puppies are ready for a new home! Ophelia, Clementine, and Indu all born on the Super Moon December 21, 2021. They are wonderful pups, learning new tricks every day!

Moon Unit is her name....but we call her Moonu. Her puppies were born on the Super Moon Dec 21, 2020. In a few more weeks they will be going to their furever homes but Moonu still needs somewhere to call home. Moon Unit was found at the dump in pretty bad shape, and carrying a few surprises! She is a strong and healthy girl now, and a wonderful Mama. PM if you want to give your love to this beautiful little Mama.

Update: NIna has returned H'Ohm! Sometimes it just isn't the right fit, and we appreciate the honesty and getting her back safe and happy. Nina requires a chicken-free yard:)

Nina has been adopted! Nina is a lucky girl. She was rescued from a neglectful situation as a puppy and has been at H'Ohm for a few years. It's hard to let her go, but knowing she will be loved and thrive in an environment where she is the queen makes it easy. We love you Nina xo

UPDATE: THOM HAS BEEN ADOPTED!

Thom is still looking for his forever human. Could it be you? Thom is a sweet boy, good around cats, can hold his own in a conversation, and loves to snuggle. Please consider giving Thom a home. He is approx 4-5 years old, neutered and fully vaccinated. Thom currently lives with 15 other dogs at my little shelter and gets on with all of them, but he and many others would do so much better having more individual attention.
