Have you ever wondered how generic drugs are regulated in Canada? Are they as safe and effective as the original brand name drugs?

Generic drugs are monitored in the same way as other brand name drugs.

Active and inactive ingredients, manufacturing processes and facilities must meet the VDD’s strict requirements for Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and manufacturers must conduct a series of tests, both during and after production, to show that every generic drug batch meets the same requirements as requested for pioneer drugs.

A generic drug may look a slightly different than the brand name of the same medication because they have different nonmedicinal ingredients (excipients) which can affect colour, size or shape. It’s important to remember that even though a generic drug may look different than the brand name drug, it is still bioequivalent and it will still act the same way in the body as the brand name drug.

👉Bottom line: If you like the properties of a specific generic drug, if it is offered at a better price, or it's more readily available, then you can feel confident that carrying such a drug in your practice will provide the same level of efficacy and safety that you have come to expect from a brand name product.
