This past summer has been the busiest season yet here at Pepper’s Pack Pet Care! There were some new faces, some familiar faces, and a whole lot of puppy kisses and kitty cuddles in between. Here are just a few of the lovely critters who kept me on my toes these last few months 🥰 🐾

This beautiful boy is a 4 year old Chihuahua-Westie mix who made the journey here all the way from the Lone Star State. As a rescue, his backstory is a little murky, but his future is bright! In addition to a new loving family, he also gets to enjoy the occasional in-home visit from me! This includes a short walk, tons of playtime in the backyard, and all the snuggles he can handle 🐾
Welcome ✨CHARLIE✨
This five year old Boston Terrier-Bulldog mix will be enjoying some one on one time with me while his family is taking a long overdue holiday. In addition to our walk (which includes multiple stops so he can roll on the grass 👀), he also gets lots of playtime, snuggles, belly rubs and a little snacko of apples and blueberries. This super active boy is a big bundle of silliness and gives the most slobbery kisses I’ve ever had! 🐾

This lovely lady is a 3 year old German Shepherd-Belgian Malinois-Alaskan Malamute mix, and is the newest member of Pepper’s Pack! She is a gentle giant who has the most dazzling array of bow ties I have ever seen 😍
Dash is a sensitive soul who takes her time warming up to people, and who prefers the company of a select few individuals. As an introvert myself, I can appreciate her trepidation in meeting new friends and being in new surroundings.
Over the last few weeks, I have done my best to slowly and patiently ease my way into her trusted circle of friends. I began by going on walks with Dash and her owner, and then transitioning to just Dash and myself, in order to help her become more comfortable with me outside the presence of her safe people. Our first couple of solo walks were successful though lacked any interaction outside of Dash obeying her regular commands. On our most recent walk, however, she accepted treats directly from my hand and permitted me to pet her. While these small acts may seem insignificant, they actually represent a big step towards building trust, which is crucial to developing a positive relationship 🐾
Welcome ✨FINNIGAN✨
This distinguished looking gentlemen is an almost 7 year old mini poodle who recently spent five days boarding with me while his family attended a sporting event in Boston. While here, he enjoyed several walks a day, lots of playtime, and even a few frozen peanut butter Kong treats 👀.
He is quite possibly the biggest cuddle bug I’ve hosted so far, and I lost count of the number of times I walked into a room and found him curled up on my husband’s lap, or wrapped in a big hug. Of course, Finn would cuddle with me too, but only if his first choice of snuggle buddy was unavailable. I’m not saying I’m jealous, but…..

This 5 year old boy has an air of quiet dignity about him. Although not shy and aloof like many cats, he will let you know what his boundaries are, and when he has reached his socializing limit.
I had the pleasure of checking in on Spock while his family was camping last week, and in addition to the usual food/water/litter box clean up included in my In-Home TLC visits, I also administered Spock’s epilepsy medication. Having studied animal nursing, and diseases and emergencies in school, as well as being Pet First Aid certified, administering medication is a service that I can offer to my clients. Please don’t let any special needs be an impediment to booking with me; I am always happy to discuss and accommodate your pet’s specific concerns 🐾

This happy lil guy is an eight month old Frenchie-Border Collie-Shepherd mix who made the journey here from Costa Rica, and now shares his space with five cats.
As a puppy, he has a lot of energy and goes for multiple walks a day. He is gaining more confidence on his leash, and has already mastered a few basic commands. He is also already crate trained and very well socialized. It’s clear to me that his owner has put a ton of time and effort into training him, and I know he is going to be a lovely addition to my pack 🥰 🐾
Protect those paws!! During the summer months when it’s sweltering outside, don’t forget that your pets can suffer too. Check out the handy dandy temperature chart above, and remember the general rule of thumb: if you can’t comfortably hold your hand to the ground for 7 seconds, it’s too hot for paws!

This beautiful boy is a 2.5 year old chihuahua who splits his time between here and Ottawa. Don’t let his size fool you though, he is a 7-pound ball of energy! As a covid puppy, he is still working on his socialization and building confidence on his leash, but our twice weekly walks will help him develop those skills.
Patience and consistency are key to helping your pup enjoy their walks, and to view them as a positive experience rather than a chore. Your dog will take their cue from you, so rather than trying to rush them through a walk, or become frustrated if they’re reluctant to go, take your time with them, offer a treat, and try to stay calm. Their behaviour and mood will reflect yours, so if you’re relaxed and calm, they’ll follow suit. Walks should be pleasurable for both of you, so start small, reward big, and just enjoy your time together 🐾

I had the absolute pleasure of checking on these beauties while their mom was down in Costa Rica volunteering at an animal sanctuary. During my three times a day visits, I prepared their raw diet meals, refilled their water, cleaned up their litter boxes, brushed them, and gave them a metric ton of love, pettings and snuggles.
If you’re thinking about a longer holiday (in this case 3.5 weeks), don’t let the time frame hold you back. In-home visits are ideal for this type of situation as your pet(s) can stay in the comfort of their own home, and you can rest assured they will be well taken care of.

These two lovely boys have spent the last week boarding with me here at Pepper’s Pack while their family attended a wedding across the pond. As usual, they had the whole house to themselves, got to play in our big backyard, went on lots of walks, and received a ton of love and snuggles (and maybe slept on the bed too 👀).
Prior to this stay, Oscar and Newton spent a few trial days with me, initially just for a few hours, then a full day, and eventually an overnight visit. This gradual acclimation process made this most recent stay super relaxing and stress-free for them, and is something I highly recommend for any of my guests, particularly those with separation anxiety concerns.

This giant pup (who thinks he’s a lap dog) has been a guest at Pepper’s Pack for the last 10 days while his owners enjoy a much needed holiday.
Despite the rain, we’ve still managed to go on a number of walks, and we took advantage of some rare sunshine to go to the off leash park, which was followed up with a refreshing pup cup.
Spring and summer boarding dates are filling up quickly, but there are still some openings available. If you have some holidays planned and need to sort out your pet care arrangements, please reach out! Your pet will get personalized attention, lots of love, and the whole house to themselves! I first introduced you to this lovely boy last summer, when I went camping with his family…and unbeknownst to him, a baby sister was brewing on that trip as well. Fast forward several months and when it was time for her to make her grand entrance, Mack spent a few days here at Pepper’s Pack so baby girl’s parents could go through the birthing process without any additional worries.
When it comes to boarding, people often think of it solely in terms of holidays, but there are all sorts of reasons you may need to board your pup, even if it’s just for a day/night. Going on a business trip? Out of town birthday party? Having some home renos done? Last minute change of plans and you need someone to keep an eye on your dog? Let me know!! These two lovely boys spent part of March Break at chateau Pepper’s Pack. They went for several walks a day, played in our backyard and *may* have been allowed to sleep on the bed with me 👀
Prior to their scheduled stay, we did a trial run visit where they came here just for a few hours to get used to my house, the sounds, the scents, myself and my family. We followed that up with one overnight stay to help them acclimate and lower the stress they might otherwise feel being in a new environment. While both dogs benefited from this, it was particularly helpful for Oscar (the grey and white pup). He is a covid puppy and has minimal socialization and exposure to other people and places; his owner also describes him as a Velcro dog, since he is absolutely glued to her side and follows her everywhere.
Giving dogs with separation anxiety or limited socialization the chance to gradually get used to boarding (especially if, like Oscar, they’ve never been away from home) can help ease the transition into a new environment and reduce the stress experienced by both the pet and their owner.

This 9 week old Imperial Shih Tzu mix is the newest (and tiniest!) member of Pepper’s Pack. Weighing in at a whopping 3 pounds of puppy energy, this adorable girl will melt your heart and smother you in kisses. She may also try to nibble on your shoe laces, but that’s a story for another day 🤫
Looking forward to many more visits with this little ball of energy, and watching her progress with her basic commands and leash manners (once she’s grown into her harness) 🐾

I had the pleasure of checking in on this beautiful Bengal kitten and her Doodle-mix brothers several times a day over the last week while their family was away on holiday.
For some pets, like Snickers and Max, in-home visits work better than boarding. These two have never been away from home without their family, and with Max being a senior dog (almost 14 years old), minimizing stress and maximizing comfort were priorities in their care. Being able to stay in their own environment, sleep where they are most comfortable, and maintain their routine were key to ensuring a stress-free week. It also gave their owners peace of mind knowing that their fur babies would still be taken care of with minimal disruption.

This gorgeous girl is a 4 year old Shepherd-Husky mix, and is the newest member to join Pepper’s Pack. Originally raised in the country, Scout is learning to adapt to a more suburban environment, and that includes getting used to things that we normally take for granted, such as lots of traffic, noisy construction zones, and other pets out for a walk.
While this type of transition can bring both excitement and new opportunities for pet owners, it can also be a source of stress and anxiety for pets, particularly when they encounter something new and unexpected (like the big bus we saw today, or the construction crew digging up the road). I find the best approach in these situations is to offer lots of reassurance, be patient with the pet, and read their body language for signs of increased distress and anxiety. As Scout and I got closer to the bus, her ears went down, she lowered her tail and started to resist - this was a clear sign to me that she was uncomfortable and rather than force her forward, we simply turned back and went the other direction.
I know she’ll eventually acclimate and these distractions will fade into the background, but for now, we’ll take it slow. Moving is a major life event for everyone, and pets are no exception, so be patient, give them grace and learn their limits 🐾

This distinguished looking gentleman is the newest member of Pepper’s Pack, and is always dressed to impress with his natural tuxedo colouring. I have the privilege of visiting him twice a day to make sure he has fresh food and water, a clean litter box, and most importantly, lots of love and affection.
If you have a cat (or two or three or four…) and have travel plans coming up, consider opting for an in-home visit instead of boarding your feline friend. Cats generally do not fare as well as dogs when it comes to environmental changes, and typically do better when left in their own home. It is far less stressful and minimizes the disruption to their routine. Cats are very much creatures of habit, so maintaining consistency and predictability are key to keeping them calm, relaxed and happy 🐾

So….the secret is out. Despite my best efforts, I am in fact not perfect. Nowhere near perfect. And if I could give myself a big ol’ facepalm right now, I would.
