Did you know that the purpose of water for our pets is to carry important nutrients into and out of the cells of the body, aiding in digestion and the absorption of nutrients. It also regulates body temperature, lubricates joints, improves cognitive function, and cushions the brain and spinal cord. Dogs should drink approximately 1 oz of water per pound of body weight daily. Cats need a daily amount of about 3.5 to 4.5 ounces of water per 5 pounds of their body weight.

Urine marking is a form of communication for dogs. What is your dog trying to tell you? It could be a simple message, or it could be a sign of an underlying health issue or a behavioral response to anxiety or fear. If your dog is marking more than usual, make an appointment with one of our veterinarians to rule out any health issues and to understand further.

Weekend Tips for your pets!

1. Watch the grill. The smell of food cooking can be hard for your dog to resist. Make sure your pet doesn’t get too close to the grill.

2. Avoid hot cars. If you are traveling in a car, for a picnic, BBQ, going to the park or visiting family, never, never, never leave a pet in a hot car, even with the windows partially open.

3. Cover the trash. Keep trash covered and away from pets to avoid leftovers and bones, corn cobs, etc. for pets.

4. No table scraps. Resist the temptation to give pets table scraps. Fatty foods can upset tummies, leading to vomiting or diarrhea. Keep dog and cat treats nearby. Never give pets cooked bones; they are a choking hazard, can splinter and result in intestinal problems.

5. Avoid overheating. Provide plenty of water and shade for your pets. If you have concrete or other hard surfaces in your backyard, test them with the palm of your hand. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws.

6. Take care with alcohol, other toxic substances. This applies to more than just beer and other alcoholic beverages. Other toxic substances like insect repellant, charcoal and lighter fluid may also attract curious pets, so keep them away.

7. Tag and chip your pet. Pets can easily slip out of the door or yard if you have a lot of people over. Make sure information on ID tags is current and that any contact information associated with your pet’s microchip is up to date.

8. Fresh water, no alcohol for pets. Alcohol can be deadly to pets. Make sure empty cans and bottles are in the covered trash. Provide clean fresh water for pets.

9. Pets can get a sunburn too. Keep them out of the sun.

When it comes to our pets, we often think about any “testing” as being related to our pet being sick. Even for us humans, the thought of having our blood drawn can be a little bit frightening, and it is natural for us to feel the same for our pets. However, routine annual bloodwork is essential in helping our pets live long and healthy lives.

Please call us today to schedule your annual or senior pet bloodwork! Our doctors recommend annual bloodwork for healthy adult pets, and bloodwork every six months for senior pets, especially those with underlying health conditions.

Amazing Cat Facts!

Cats are believed to be the only mammals who don’t taste sweetness.

Cats are nearsighted, but their peripheral vision and night vision are much better than that of humans.

Cats are supposed to have 18 toes (five toes on each front paw; four toes on each back paw).

Cats’ collarbones don’t connect to their other bones, as these bones are buried in their shoulder muscles.

Cats have whiskers on the backs of their front legs, as well.

Cats walk like camels and giraffes: They move both of their right feet first, then move both of their left feet. No other animals walk this way.

A**l Glands! Not a comfortable subject, we know, but as pet owners you should know more about them.

A**l glands are two small scent glands used for marking, and are located just at the inside of the a**s at around 4 and 8 o’clock.

Dogs, cats, and many other mammals have these glands. These fluid-filled sacs contain a very pungent fishy-smelling secretion that can vary in consistency from watery to thick and pasty.

Under normal circumstances in most pets, self-grooming, defecation and exercise facilitate the automatic emptying of these glands.

Many dogs and cats will also involuntarily express their a**l sacks when they are fearful or stressed.

But it is when the a**l glands are not emptied and become overly full (often referred to as “impaction”), that they become more familiar to us. Full or impacted a**l glands can become painful, inflamed, infected, or even abscessed. Some of the signs that your fur friend is having an a**l gland issue is scooting and licking of the area.

Please schedule an exam and or a**l gland expression for your companion animal if you suspect an issue or just as part of your pets health maintenance.

The good news is that most pets will go through life with no a**l gland issues, but you should be aware of the signs and treatments.

When it comes to preserving your pet's good health long-term, annual exams are essential. Even if your cat or dog appears perfectly healthy, taking them to the vet for a checkup offers your vet the chance to check in on their health, administer essential care, and identify any emerging health issues so they can be treated early, before they become more serious concerns.

Harwood Pet Hospital makes it easier for our clients to schedule appointments online. We also send text or email reminders, and our caring staff treats every patient like they're our only one!

We seem to have a lot of Chihuahua patients here for their check ups at Harwood Pet Hospital today. Perhaps because it is Taco Tuesday 😀

Here are some interesting facts about Chihuahuas as well as Tacos!

Chihuahuas were sacred to the Aztecs and it is the Aztec nobility of Mexico that introduced them to the world.

The Mexican state of Chihuahua is their namesake. The modern Chihuahua is most likely a cross between the Techichi, an ancient breed from Central and South America, and small, hairless dogs that originated in Asia.

International Chihuahua Appreciation Day occurs on May 14th!

The taco was invented between 1000 and 500 B.C..

The word taco means 'light lunch'.

October 4th is National Taco Day!

This may be a little gross for some, but we think it's really cool! One of our recent patients presented with an oozing sore that wouldn't heal, and after further investigation, we discovered it was a cuterebra larva. Cuterebra is a type of botfly whose larvae are parasitic and burrow into the skin, eyes, or other parts of mammals. Sometimes they're called "warbles" or "wolf worms." It was definitely interesting from a scientific perspective, but most importantly we were able to remove it and relieve our patient's discomfort.

Otto came to visit us recently because he had a torn dew claw that was bothering him. Dew claws are those little extra nails that some dogs have on the inside of their front legs. They can get caught on things and torn, which is what happened to Otto. He was so brave and patient while we treated him. I think he knows that we're here to help. He's such a good boy, and of course as handsome as ever!
