There’s not a cut-and-dry answer as to whether dental chews work. They may help keep your pooch’s teeth clean and the dry kibble can be satisfying for your dog to crunch in her mouth - and taste yummy. Though chews that are properly designed can potentially reduce tartar and plaque buildup, they’re not a substitute for regular tooth brushing and professional dental cleanings - just an additional tool.

Did you know that there are differences between left- and right-sided congestive heart failure? Clinical signs of congestive heart failure (CHF) vary significantly depending on which side your dog has it. There are many causes of CHF in dogs, but the most common are mitral valve insufficiency and dilated cardiomyopathy. If you are noticing your dog has difficulty breathing, has persistent coughing, or tires out very easily, these may be signs your dog could have a heart condition. Cats are obligate carnivores, meaning their diet consists of 70% meat protein. Egg whites contain an abundance of protein while the yolk is a great source of healthy fats, but eggs contain more benefits than just protein! They also contain amino acids that boost vision, digestion, heart function, immunity, pregnancy, and fetal development. Eggs also have large amounts of vitamins that provide energy and antioxidants as well as minerals that promote immune health! While it may be a good treat for your kitty, an egg is not a proper meal and lacks all the nutrients your feline friend needs to thrive. Remember, an active 10lb cat needs an average of 250 calories a day. If you have questions about your cat’s nutrition, give us a call at 905-427-0789.

We all want our homes to smell nice and clean; however, as pet owners, we have to be extra careful that whatever we are using isn’t harmful to our fur babies. Incense is dangerous to cats as their sense of smell is 14 times stronger than that of humans and the smell can be too intense for them to handle. It also produces smoke, which can be bad for their respiratory system and increase the risk of your cat developing asthma. Opt for cat-friendly methods of keeping your house smelling fresh and clean by dusting frequently, using baking soda to absorb odors, having fragrant plants such as rosemary or sage, or simmering a pot of water with cinnamon sticks, apples, or vanilla. Stay current with your cats' healthcare needs and schedule their appointment by calling 905-427-0789.

If you recently added a female puppy to your family, it's important to understand their heat cycles. Proestrus is the start of the heat period where your dog’s body is preparing to mate and averages about nine days. The estrus phase is the mating phase and usually lasts around 9 days, but can be as short as 3 or as long as 21 days. The diestrus phase occurs directly after the “in heat” stage and lasts for about 2 months. Anestrus is the uterine repair phase, in which no sexual or hormonal behavior is present, and can last for anywhere from 90 to 150 days before the next proestrus stage begins.
