Notice something different about Pranx’s sleek coat? That’s because he’s a Suri alpaca. Unlike the fluffy Huacaya, Suris showcase long, silky locks that cascade in elegant, twisted strands. Pranx is a rare beauty, representing only about 10 to 15 percent of the global alpaca population. His luxurious fiber is prized for its natural shine, softness, and refined texture—often compared to cashmere or silk. The unique texture of his fleece may require a bit more care, but it only adds to his distinctive charm. Experience the allure of Pranx and the rare elegance of the Suri alpaca ✨

Why is this alpaca covered in frost and snow? ❄️
It might look cold, but this is actually a great sign! Just like how snow sits on a well-insulated house during a storm, an alpaca with frost or snow on its back is showing that its body is doing exactly what it should—retaining heat. Their thick fleece traps warmth, keeping their body heat from escaping and melting the snow.
If the snow were to melt quickly or their backs were damp, it could indicate that they aren’t holding enough warmth. But in this case? This alpaca is cozy and well-insulated, even on the chilliest winter days ❄️

Happy Hump Day from Farmer Dee and Jethro! Captured in striking monochrome on a brisk winter day—just moments before the first snowflake dared to fall—this photo captures a quiet pause in the season. Farmer Dee stands steady, embracing the crisp air and the promise of a coming white wonderland, while Jethro, ever the honest observer, gives a knowing glance as if to say, “I’m not sure I’m ready for the cold, but I’m here for the ride.”
Whether you’re braving the chill or watching winter unfold from afar, let this moment remind you that even on the cusp of change, there’s beauty and humor to be found in every day. Enjoy your week ✨

Rupert is built for this weather! ❄️
With his thick winter coat and sturdy hooves, Rupert the donkey is perfectly at home in the snow. While some of the animals prefer to stay cozy inside, Rupert loves to crunch through the fresh powder, ears perked up and tail swishing. A little frost on his whiskers? Just part of the charm!
No matter the season, our animals bring so much personality to the farm. Does your farm crew enjoy the snow, or do they stay tucked away until spring?

Cock-a-doodle-doo! ❄️ Roo Paul isn’t bothered by the snow—he’s just out here making sure everyone knows it’s morning!
Chickens are surprisingly hardy in the cold and don’t need heat, just a well-ventilated, draft-free coop to stay comfortable. Their fluffy feathers do the rest! Alpacas and camels would agree—good insulation is key to staying warm in chilly weather.
So while we’re bundling up, our farm friends are just shaking off the snow and going about their day — we hope you have a great one!

Alpacas walk in a single-file line in the snow to conserve energy and move efficiently through difficult terrain. Each alpaca steps into the tracks left by the one in front, reducing the effort needed to navigate deep snow. This also helps with traction and stability, as the path is already tested for safety, minimizing the risk of slipping or stepping into hidden hazards.
Their strong herd instinct plays a role as well—alpacas naturally follow a leader, especially in uncertain conditions. Staying close together enhances their sense of security and allows them to monitor their surroundings for predators. Over time, this habit also creates well-packed trails, making future movement even easier.

Our cows seemed to wait until there was snow outside to welcome their babies into the world—we have one little boy and one little girl as of early this morning! Both babies and moms are doing well.
Did you know that Hereford calves are typically hardy and quick to get on their feet? Most stand and nurse within an hour of birth, ensuring they get vital colostrum for a strong start. Their thick coats also help them handle colder temperatures better than some other breeds!

Reminder: We’re Closed Today ❄️
Just a heads-up that the farm gate will be closed today as we focus on keeping our animals warm and safe during this snowy weather.
We’ll be back open next weekend and can’t wait to see you then! Stay warm, stay safe, and enjoy your Sunday.

The snow is falling, and we’ve declared tomorrow a SNOW DAY! ❄️
Our farm gate will be closed as we focus on keeping our animals warm, safe, and dry. With winter weather settling in and road conditions changing, we want to ensure everyone—both our animals and our guests—stay safe.
Along with the snowfall, our Farm family has some important personal matters to tend to, making this the best decision for both the farm and our visitors. We truly appreciate your understanding and can’t wait to welcome you back next weekend ✨
Stay warm, stay safe, and enjoy the snow! ⛄

All the animals on the farm have chilly toes today and are staying cozy in their barns—but we’re still open until 4 PM! If you’re planning a visit, be sure to drive safe and give yourself extra time with the snow in the forecast.
Our wild ducks, however, don’t mind the cold as much! Their feet have a special adaptation—a unique circulatory system that helps prevent frostbite, allowing them to waddle across icy ponds without a problem. They may not love deep snow, but you’ll still see them out and about, making the most of winter.
Bundle up and come say hi! We’d love to see you ✨

As we eagerly await the arrival of our first Hereford calf, we can’t help but reflect on why we love this breed so much.
Herefords are known for their docile nature, making them easy to work with and a joy to have on the farm. They’re generally excellent mothers, raising strong, healthy calves, and their adaptability means they thrive in various conditions. Their efficiency on pasture, combined with their rich history as a hardy and dependable breed, makes them a perfect fit for our farm.
Stay tuned as we get closer to welcoming our first Hereford baby of the year — this is an exciting time for us ✨

Halter training is essential for alpacas, ensuring their safety and making routine care, like shearing and medical checks, much easier. An untrained alpaca can be nervous, resistant, and difficult to handle, creating stress for both the animal and its handlers. This is especially true for rescues, who often arrive at our farm with little to no prior training.
While starting young is ideal, no alpaca or llama is too old to learn. With time and patience, even the most unsure animals can gain confidence and learn to accept and respect a halter. We train all our alpacas, from those born here to the rescues that join our farm, because proper handling makes a world of difference.
When an alpaca is comfortable being led and restrained, necessary procedures become far safer and less stressful for everyone involved. The effort put into halter training is always worth it—for their well-being and for those caring for them ✨

We just heard from the vet: Daisy is doing well! The team removed a tennis ball size former cyst or hardened abscess from in her cheek and above her jaw. They also had to take some bone from below her eye as it was dead from prolonged infection; however, they were able to leave interior bone to prevent her eye from drooping as she ages. The vet wants to keep her until Thursday but will call daily with an updates for us. Daisy is a fighter! Everyone here at Kensington Prairie Farm is forever grateful to all of our donors, campaign sharers and well wishers for helping us help Daisy. Thanks also to Daisy's team at #Agwest for their hard work and dedication - Daisy is lucky to have all of you! #DollarsForDaisy #KensingtonPrairieFarm
The #BCSPCA called us today to ask if we were interested in meeting and taking care of a 15 year old llama named #Daisy, who has a big abscess on her cheek & we drove right over to get her -- welcome to the farm Daisy! We can't wait for you to be feeling better and to join the other #llamas here at #kensingtonprairiefarm.

Catherine Simpson established Kensington Prairie Farm in 2000 on five acres of land in Surrey, BC in an area historically known as Kensington Prairie County. Home to 12 alpacas, the farm quickly grew to 30+ animals and in 2006, Kensington Prairie Farm relocated to Langley, BC and expanded its operations from 5 to 45 acres.
Kensington Prairie Farm is now a diversified farming operation. In addition to breeding, raising and showing Huacaya alpacas, we also market and sell a variety of high-quality Canadian made and imported alpaca products from our on-farm Boutique and online store (please see www.kensingtonprairie.ca). Kensington Prairie Farm also raises registered Polled Hereford cattle and produces artisanal honey. KPFarm Custom Agricultural Services produces high quality hay and silage and offers custom forage production services to area farmers. Naturally raised, hormone free beef and alpaca meat is also available for sale through the on-farm boutique.
Kensington Prairie Farm is a member of the Canadian Llama and Alpaca Association (CLAA), Alpaca Canada (AC), Fraser Valley Llama & Alpaca Association (FVLAC), BC Llama & Alpaca Association (BCLAA) and Alpaca Registry Inc. (ARI). We are also members of the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association, BC Cattlemen’s Association and West Coast Hereford Club.

She is also a board membr of the Fraser Valley Farm Direct Marketing Association, Fraser Valley Llama and Alpaca Club and West Coast Hereford Club.

Kensington Prairie Farm donates all proceeds from group farm tours to Quechua Benefit, a charity providing services to the poorest Quechua alpaca breeders in Peru. Quechua Benefit not only operates a Children’s Village near Chivy, Peru (Casa Chapi Children’s Village), but also conducts annual medical and dental missions to a largely forgotten people living in remote areas of the Peruvian highlands (www.quechuabenefit.org). When possible, Catherine volunteers for these annual missions in Peru.
