Raya and her handler did wonderfully in their 3 session program. They were able to obtain the building blocks needed to make walks more relaxing and less stressful!

Today marks the official one year anniversary of Press Paws Dog Training! Hard to believe it’s already been a year. Thank you so much to everyone that has supported me and this business, I truly could not do this without you! Thank you thank you thank you for trusting me to take care of your fur babies and teach you how to communicate constructively and effectively with them. It allows me to do what I love to do and I will forever be so appreciative of that. Here’s to many many more years!

Macie and her handler did an amazing job with our recall practice. Long lines and flexi leashes can be great tools to work on recall in a safe and secure way. Something to remember is that you need to be more interesting and engaging than anything else in the environment to have a solid recall. This means movement, high value rewards, an engaging voice and above all consistency! #dogtraining #dogtrainer #recall #recalltraining #longleash #longleashrecall #allistondogs #allistondogtrainer
@rockythenorthpaw and his dad absolutely crushed this session!! Beautiful work.

I just had a big long breakdown typed out on what I was doing here with Ryker and why I love games based training when Instagram shut down on me and I lost the post 🙃 I love technology 🙄
I don’t have it in me to type it all out again but I do want to share this because Rykers great and it was a lot of fun - just know the post was very informative and passionate.
Games based training is truly my favourite thing in the dog training world. It’s a fantastic way to strengthen your bond with your dog, encourage their natural instincts in a productive (by human standards) and fun way as well as teach boundaries, self control and practice obedience.
Tug is one of my favourite games - enjoy these clips of Ryker and I. I may rewrite that breakdown in the coming days when I’m not feeling so defeated. 🥲

Pro tip for dogs that won’t drink even if it’s stinkin hot out: bobbing for treats. (Featuring the cutie I get to watch tonight, Kodi)
Toss a couple of pieces of kibble or treats into a water dish and watch your pup work to get them. They’ll lap up some water in the process and it’s a good brain game! A great two for one deal. Kodi did eventually figure it out and had a ton of fun doing so!

Okay confession time: I’m really not great with consistency on social media. Mostly because I’m usually caught up in the moment and not focused on recording but I’m trying to get better with that!
Let’s talk about a hot topic in the dog training world, or at least it was a month ago, sniffing.
Should your dog be allowed to sniff? Seems like a pretty silly question when you think about how dogs interact with their environment. You may or may not be surprised to hear there are people that will tell you your dog absolutely should not sniff on their walk. On the flip side there are people that will say your dog should be able to sniff whatever they want whenever they want to. I believe it’s more nuanced than that.
Yes, your dog should have opportunities to sniff and explore the world around them. However those opportunities should come with guidance.
For reactive dogs that thrive with a bit more structure, like Jack, I like to train a cue that you would’ve heard at the beginning of this video to let him know it’s okay to go explore and when it’s time to continue our walk or re-engage with me I give him his “heel” cue and we continue on our walk.
There are a couple of things I check before giving Jack the ok to sniff. Are there any potential triggers around? In Jacks case that’s other dogs. If there are I will keep him engaged with me and help him work through the trigger until they pass and then release him. Is the area safe? Ie no off leash dogs, potential threat of wild animals, free of potentially dangerous garbage etc. Will the area be engaging for him to sniff? I always pick spaces with lots of trees, posts, shrubbery and anything else other dogs may have marked. As gross as it is for us, they love it.
In cases of less structured walking I may use sniffing as a reward if it’s of value to the dog I’m working with. It’s a great way to teach self control and sniffing with guidance will help deter your dog from continuously jumpi
Let’s talk muzzles!
Muzzles get a bad rap. Often people think that dogs that wear muzzles are “bad”, that they’re inherently aggressive & dangerous. While some dogs that wear a muzzle may have aggressive tendencies ranging from mild reactivity to having an actual bite history that’s not always the case - some dogs wear muzzles because they’ll eat anything and everything off the ground during walks. Whatever the reason may be for why someone uses a muzzle with their dog they are a wonderful tool for keeping your dog and sometimes those around them safe and happy!
It’s important when choosing a muzzle for your dog that you keep in mind proper sizing. Your dog should be able to comfortably take food and chew, be able to fully open their mouth to pant as well as still be able to drink water when wearing their muzzle. If it doesn’t allow for one or all of those things it’s too tight.
When introducing a muzzle to your dog it’s important to take things slow and make it a positive experience. That means lots of treats! Allow your dog to put their face in on their own and reward for doing so, slowly building up to being able to do up the buckle and leave it on for a short period of time to start.
