"Perna mussels (also called “green-lipped mussel” [GLM]) are a natural alternative to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in dogs and work their magic through similar actions in the body.

Recommended Dose: 150 mg per ten pounds (4.5 kg) of body weight daily, divided in meals.

According to board-certified veterinary nutritionist Dr. Donna Raditic, the anti-inflammatory effects of EPA and DHA in dogs with various diseases—including
➡️ kidney disease
➡️ cardiovascular disorders
➡️ osteoarthritis
➡️ atopy (skin conditions)
➡️ inflammatory bowel disease
have been evaluated, and the dose ranges from 50 to 220 mg/kg (23–100mg/lb) of body weight. The highest dose is recommended for osteoarthritis in dogs not otherwise being supplemented (not getting additional omegas in commercial dog food). If your dog isn’t eating any other sources of omega-3s (like sardines), consider a maintenance dose of 75 mg per kg (34 mg/lb) of body weight for healthy animals. These doses are based on adding the milligrams of EPA and DHA per supplement capsule or milliliters of liquid.

We recommend storing omega-3s in the refrigerator once opened; aim to use up your supply within thirty days, or buy capsules and hide them in a meatball. (Or puncture capsule and squeeze into food.)

This month we are excited to shine a spotlight on the incredible work local rescues do for our community. This month we have interviewed three local rescues and we are excited to help them get their message out. Next Up 🐶 Alliston & District Humane Society ADHS has been serving the community since 1988, providing shelter and care for stray, unwanted, and neglected animals across several townships. Operating a no-kill policy for adoptable animals, ADHS runs a comprehensive range of programs, including a dog, cat, and small animal adoption service, as well as a feral cat neutering program. The shelter is supported by volunteers and medical staff and offers humane education and wildlife services to the community. Since opening their first permanent facility in 2010, ADHS continues to be a vital resource for local animal welfare. First Up 🐶 Lost Boys Hope This rescue is one of Ontario’s largest foster-based rescues, dedicated to tackling the dog overpopulation crisis in Northern Canadian Reserves and First Nations communities. Since 2016, the organization has rescued over 6,000 dogs and focuses on spay/neuter programs, wellness clinics, and education to address the root causes of overpopulation. Each dog is fostered in a home environment to help them transition from free-roaming life to family pets. Supported by a passionate network of volunteers, Lost Boys Hope continues to make a significant impact by connecting communities in Ontario and Manitoba to provide much-needed care and resources.
