Is My Pet in Danger of Getting Bird Flu?
Your pet’s risk of avian flu will depend on several factors. First, cats are more vulnerable to the disease than dogs, but both can become infected by consuming raw contaminated meat, unpasteurized milk, or wild birds.

How can I Protect my Pet from Bird Flu?
While there is no animal vaccine for H5N1, there are several ways you can protect your pet from avian flu:

Keep your pets, especially cats, indoors
Keep your pet away from wild birds, poultry, and cattle
Prevent your pet from eating dead birds or other animals
Avoid feeding your pet raw meat or poultry
Avoid feeding your pet unpasteurized milk

How is Avian Flu Diagnosed in Dogs and Cats?
Avian flu isn’t the only respiratory disease cats and dogs can contract, which means that diagnostic tests are needed to determine the cause of their symptoms and give your pet the best treatment possible. It is important to know if your pet may have eaten a dead bird or consumed unpasteurized cow’s milk since these increase your pet’s risk of becoming infected.

Please let us know if you have any questions about your own pets.

The Canadian Dachshund Rescue (Ontario) very kindly wrote to us to express their appreciation for the care that we provide. Here is a bit of that letter:
For an animal rescue organization to thrive it will depend on several things: the commitment of its volunteers; the generosity of its donors; and the support of its partners, particularly when it comes to those providing veterinary care. In the case of Canadian Dachshund Rescue Ontario (CDRO), our veterinary partners often go above and beyond to support our work, and perhaps none more so than Mississippi Mills Animal Hospital (MMAH). At MMAH, a dedicated team of veterinarians and registered veterinary technicians have provided care in the form of extreme dentals, spay and neuters, mass removals, and ultrasounds. And the best part? They are highly knowledgeable about Dachshunds! They love the breed so much that one of the veterinarians adopted two dogs that came into our care a few years ago. They also provide ongoing care for some of our sanctuary dogs (dogs with terminal health issues that prevent them from being adopted, so they remain in the care of the organization). From a simple x-ray to a more complex cardiac ultrasound (and everything in between), we’re so grateful to have the expertise and support of the team at MMAH! That’s the long and the short of it! Thank you, MMAH!

Equine Eastern Encephalitis. The last two summers we have seen higher than normal level of horses succumbing to EEE. Usually we only see an outbreak every 8-9 yrs. This increase in prevalence is quite concerning and likely due to warming trends which will not likely go away anytime soon. Younger horses seem to be more likely to contract the Virus which is spread by mosquitos. It has been recommended by experts that we consider vaccinating horses under 3yrs of age twice a year for EEE as they do in Florida. Most commonly foals are vaccinated for the first time in the fall, with a booster 1 month after the initial vaccine, then again the following spring.
Two things to consider:
1. to continue vaccinating in early fall, spring until they are 3 yrs old 2. starting foal vaccination at 4 months rather than waiting until 6 months, even if the mare was vaccinated prefoaling.
In this situation, the foals should get 2 boosters after the initial vaccine when starting vaccination this early.
Older horses whose immune system maybe deteriorating may also benefit from twice a year vaccination for EEE.
If you have any questions please feel free to reach out.
