Did you know kibble does not actually clean your pets’ teeth? In fact, kibble can create more dental issues than you think! 🦷

Dogs and cats both lack an enzyme (amylase) in their saliva which starts the digestion of carbs and starches in the mouth. These carbs and starches then feed the bacteria in the mouth causing plaque and tartar to build up on the teeth!

But doesn't the scraping action of kibble help to clean my pets’ teeth? Nope! Both dogs and cats have jaws and teeth specifically designed for ripping and tearing meat, as well as chomping down on (this is why a raw meaty bone is an excellent toothbrush!). Dogs and cats’ mouths are not designed to chew the way humans do; they lack those flat molars for grinding.
Besides, would you substitute brushing your teeth with eating a few crackers? Your dentist may not be happy with you!

So, between the plaque build up and lack of cleaning action from kibble, it is really not enough to keep your pets’ teeth and gums happy and healthy. Consider a fresh food/minimally processed diet (raw or cooked, and low in carbohydrates) for optimal dental health! Even replacing just 20% of your pets’ kibble with fresh or whole foods (aw or cooked meat, steamed veggies, etc.) will benefit your pets overall health, including their dental health!

Offering your pets raw meaty bones are a wonderful and natural way to clean their teeth. If that’s not your speed, you can also brush daily and/or use products like water additives and oral sprays to keep those teeth pearly white!

Wellness Wednesday! 🎉

Looking for a non-toxic, pet safe bug spray? 🐾🦟

The good news is you can make one at home!

Ingredients:
- 2 cups water
- 1/4 cup lemon juice
- 4 tablespoons non alcohol vanilla extract
- 20 drops catnip oil

Add all ingredients to a spray bottle and shake well to combine, mist over pets body avoiding the face. Reapply every two hours while outdoors.

At RuffMutts, we are dedicated to helping pet parents “feed better for less” by offering quality pet food for every budget. Nutrition is a key element to our pets living their best lives and we are here to help pet parents make the best decisions for their pets. We research every product we bring in for quality and ingredients.

Candidate must have a positive attitude, excellent customer service and be able to work alone. Must be able to lift over 40lbs repetitively and be comfortable with computers.

Retail experience, experience with pets and ability to provide nail trims. Knowledge of the pet food and supplies industry, a valid drivers license, and experience using Microsoft Teams would be considered an asset.

This is a part-time position; ideal candidate will be available to work evenings and Saturdays. Perks include in store discounts and free pet food monthly.

It's Wellness Wednesday!

Tis the season for fleas and ticks! Check out these alternatives to chemical prevention:

DIY Flea & Tick Spray:
-1 tsp neem oil
-1 tsp vanilla extract
-1 cup witch hazel
-1/4 cup aloe vera gel
Combine all ingredients in a spray bottle. Apply to pet before outdoor adventures, taking care to avoid the face, or spray on a bandana. Reapply every 4 hours, make a fresh batch every 2 weeks.

Soundshield Ultrasonic:
Emits ultrasonic waves which disrupts the nervous system of fleas & ticks in a 1.5m radius! Safe for animals and humans. Coming soon to RuffMutts!

Diatomaceous Earth:
Use as a natural dewormer internally, or a natural flea & tick remedy topically. Apply to pets coat, avoiding the face. May also use on pet beds to eliminate fleas.
