Get your entries in! πβοΈ
Amherst Veterinary Hospital is sponsoring a short story contest again this year. We hope to make it an annual event! βοΈ
This year's winner will receive the Kona Cup trophy and $300.
Five runners-up will receive $40 Coles gift cards. The winner's story will be displayed in our lobby until next year's winner is announced (Aoife Byrnes won last year with a terrific piece entitled "April 3rd, 1992").
All of the rules are posted below.
Kona Cup Short Story Contest Rules:
1. Student must be in Grades 9 through 12 and attend school in Cumberland County or Tantramar (home-schooled students in these grades, living in these two regions, are also invited to participate).
2. Contest entries are due BEFORE 9 a.m. December 1st. Contest entries must be submitted in hard copy to the front desk of Amherst Veterinary Hospital, 311 Willow Street, Amherst. Entries may be mailed, but are not eligible if not received by AVH by that deadline.
3. The story must be submitted on a single, regular (8.5 by11 inch) sheet of white paper. The story can only occupy one side of the sheet. The student's name, school and contact information should be on the back. We do not want names on the front with the story, please.
4. The font size must be large enough to be comfortably read, and the story must fit on one sheet of paper. We anticipate approximate word count in the range of 200 to 500 words.
5. The work must be fiction and original. Students cannot use AI to assist the creative/writing process.
6. Any theme or subject is acceptable. Stories deemed too mature for a general audience will still qualify and the winner will be acknowledged in the lobby, but instead of posting the story, clients of AVH will need to request a copy.
7. The winner gives us permission to reproduce the story in any non-commercial fashion.
8. The judging panel will have three members, myself among them (part owner of AVH, author of the novels Tantramar and Peak). Our second judge last year was published author and university lecturer Meghan Allen, and the third was a representative of the county library system. I anticipate having the same arrangement for judging this year
We cant wait to read all your stories! π
