There are many residents who would love to have a home for the holidays, but we do want to remind you that pets are a forever decision (no matter where you adopt them from).
We are open to the public from 1-4 if you’d like to come out and meet those looking for their furever home.

UPDATE: Buttons has been adopted!!! Buttons is on a mission to find her furever home. She’s eager to meet visitors when they come in, and she also gets along with other cats! Let’s not let that number of days of shelter life get any higher ♥️ Special thanks goes to the Amherst Veterinary Hospital for taking her twice a week since she came in for their weight loss program. Our Story The Little Shelter With the Big Heart

We are a small shelter that cares for and re-homes cats and dogs from all over Cumberland County. Many are surrendered to us, brought in as strays or they have been abused or neglected. We provide a loving environment, vet care and we spay or neuter all animals. Adopters of kittens and puppies too young to alter sign an agreement to have the animal fixed by a certain date. When we receive proof of the spay or neuter a small rebate is given.

The LA Animal Shelter endorses positive dog training methods (no e-collars or prong collars) as suggested by the NS SPCA and the Canadian Veterinary Association. And we will seek out trainers who follow the same philosophy.

Our No Kill policy means we do not euthanize animals unless there is a severe health issue that cannot be treated, if the animal is suffering, or if there is severe aggression that cannot be reversed.

We receive funding from the Town of Amherst and the Municipality of Cumberland which sustains us for three months of the year. The other months we rely on donations, adoption fees and fundraisers.
