This is a good article. I think instead of the “adopt don’t shop” cryers. If people actually didn’t get the wrong breed or a 5 pm till 8 pm dog there wouldn’t really be any dogs in The shelters as you would have researched your breed type and know what your getting and what really does suit your lifestyle. and there’s no changing the breed character to suit our lifestyle or be a part time pet. It’s all or nothing or you will pay the price Or they do

Everyone who is thinking of getting dogs should read this because you need to understand this reality:

***I am a 21st century dog.***
-I'm a Malinois.
Overskilled among dogs, I excel in all disciplines and I'm always ready to work: I NEED to work.
But nowadays I get asked to chill on the couch all day everyday.

-I am an Akita Inu.
My ancestors were selected for fighting bears.
Today I get asked to be tolerant and I get scolded for my reactivity when another approaches me.

-I am a Beagle.
When I chase my prey, I raise my voice so the hunters could follow.
Today they put an electric collar on me to shut up, and you make me come back to you - no running - with a snap of your fingers.

-I am a Yorkshire Terrier.
I was a terrifying rat hunter in English mines.
Today they think I can't use my legs and they always hold me in their arms.

-I'm a Labrador Retriever.
My vision of happiness is a dive into a pond to bring back the duck he shot to my master.
Today you forget I'm a walking, running, swimming dog; as a result I'm fat, made to stay indoors, and to babysit.

-I am a Jack Russell.
I can take on a fox, a mean badger, and a rat bigger than me in his den.
Today I get scolded for my character and high energy, and forced to turn into a quiet living room dog.

-I am a Siberian Husky.
Experienced the great, wide open spaces of Northern Europe, where I could drag sleds for long distances at impressive speeds.
Today I only have the walls of the house or small garden as a horizon, and the holes I dig in the ground just to release energy and frustration, trying to stay sane.

-I am a border collie
I was made to work hours a day in partnershipwith my master, and I am an unmistakable artist of working with the herd.
Today they are mad at me because, for lack of sheep, I try to check bikes, cars, children in the house and everything in motion.

I am ...
I am a 21st century dog.
I'm pretty, I'm alert, I'm obedient, I stay in a bag...but I'm also an individual who, from centuries of training, needs to express my instincts, and I am *not* suited for the sedentary life you'd want me to lead.
Spending eight hours a day alone in the house or in the garden - with no work and no one to play or run with, seeing you for a short time in the evening when you get home, and only getting a small toilet walk will make me deeply unhappy.
I'll express it by barking all day, turning your yard into a minefield, doing my needs indoors, being unmanageable the rare times I'll find myself outside, and sometimes spending my days sunk, sad, lonely, and depressed, on my pillow.
You may think that I should be happy to be able to enjoy all this comfort while you go to work, but actually I’ll be exhausted and frustrated, because this is absolutely NOT what I'm meant to do, or what I need to be doing.
If you love me, if you've always dreamed of me, if my beautiful blue eyes or my athletic look make you want me, but you can't give me a real dog's life, a life that's really worth living according to my breed, and if you can't offer me the job that my genes are asking, DO NOT buy or adopt me!
If you like the way I look but aren't willing to accept my temperament, gifts, and traits derived from long genetic selection, and you think you can change them with only your good will, then DO NOT BUY OR ADOPT ME.
I’m a dog from the 21st century, yes, but deep inside me, the one who fought, the one who hunted, the one who pulled sleds, the one who guided and protected a herd still lives within.
So think **very** carefully before you choose your dog. And think about getting two, rather than one, so I won't be so very lonely waiting for you all day. Eight or ten hours is just a workday to you, but it's an eternity for me to be alone.

Here is Echo, a beautiful 70lb nearly 5 month old Bernese puppy. This is him refusing to get out of the car 😂😂😂😂😂. Thanks Laura for sharing ..
This is the 5 month mark we’re no longer smaller cute puppies but huge loveable bundles of challenges , which can also be frustrating. I asked Laura to share her experiences with Echo, as she is familiar with the Bernese breed and also if you have an Alice puppy , from either litter , feel free to share on here and ask questions from the other families I know some families are not familiar with this breed and it can be frustrating for them..and it helps other families that are struggling with their puppy to know it’s ok, this will pass 😊😊🥰

Meet Sprinkles Flyn and Abby baby lol. Interesting story behind this beautiful boy.. his momma Abby (sister to Alice’s momma Assay ) was in labour in northern Sask, when she got into trouble and puppy was stuck, so we rushed her to the local vets and she needed an emergency c section.. well.. the next few hours were so intense. The vet pulled out the babies 7 of them and nobody was breathing, meanwhile Abby started bleeding out on the surgery table , blood was running down the surgery table legs .. and as we’re watching in horror we are at the same time rubbing multiple puppies at the same time to get them breathing. Her husband, also a vet, came along with a stethoscope and in such a calm voice said keep rubbing there’s heart beats. Of course this is all at 10.00 at night. Wow. What an intense time. Eventually one by one the babies came around and started moving and chirping. Meanwhile Abby is in a fight for her life , we kept hearing the bleeding won’t stop, and we are just about in tears. then the calm voice of the husband came in, your doing fine , just keep going . Abby did recover and we were so thankful to this amazing team of vets , and here is one of the little babies that went to their home , there son named him sprinkles before he even got him. 😅😅 they say he is the best dog ever . 🥰🥰

We’re falling back into summer mode. Oh how
We love this time , a long winter, puppies, trips away, it’s time to enjoy the summer . Georgia is in full beauty mode right now, she’s just over 2 years old and a 110 lbs , her coat is just magnificent , we’re giving everyone codliver oil and raw eggs every day. Alice is looking o great shape after her puppies. But as usual the coat is blown and won’t be back till fall, probably ok for the summer. Silas is also in great shape , but we can’t get him in the water yet, 😂😂😂 he just dips his toes in I think when it’s hot enough he will be in There too ..

8 week trip to the vets

And we’re off to the vets. A good 45 minute drive and we get our first experience in a vehicle . We did great

Alice babies. 8 weeks old

Today is our big bath day and this morning we have been practicing our “manding” basically learning how to “ask” or communicate, making eye contact. This is a big part of seeing a puppy switched on, alert and ready to learn and communicate with thier human It’s amazing to watch it go from crazy jumping chaos to quietly sitting and watching and waiting. Pretty awesome for an 8 week old Puppy. They are learning and growing at an incredible rate right now. Thanks to Sophia for coming to help today, it really does take two people to do videos whilst working with the puppies.

Here we are. Going into our 8th week..it’s here. And what a beautiful bunch of puppies they are. Vet visit is on Thursday and then it’s time to meet our new families we are outside enjoying the beautiful sunshine this morning

6 weeks old. Relax time

After our short exercise in loud startle noises we are getting ready to relax and have the first of many naps today 🥰🥰💤💤

This morning after breakfast we went outside for the 15 mins it actually stopped raining, it was just a light misty rain . Then we came back inside and did some loud startle noises. We are not in the occasional fear period times they go through and every one just watched inquisitively and then got all excited when I called them lol. They did great, not one puppy ran away scared , a good exercise in confidence building .

First outdoor adventure

We just had to do it. It’s calling for 3 days of rain so this evening is our chance to get outside It’s a super challenge for them to venture outside. One or two are hesitant, but after this they won’t be again. 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰

Today we went out to the puppy play area where we have so much more room to run around and play. The big dogs get to come in and visit and I get to clean house lol. Puppy’s will be back in the house tonight.. it’s a gradual adjustment and has always worked out really well. We will start to explore the outside soon as long as we don’t have continual rain 😂😂it’s quite entertaining to watch them

We are “6 WEEKS “ old. And we are playful fluffy and got extreme cuteness going on. Also in the bitey stage too. I often hear little squeals of ouch . All part of learning how to play . This week we’ll move into some More challenging exercises, and change up the environment a bit. Hope to start getting some outside time . Weather dependant of course.

It’s Monday. Morning. Alice is the best momma ever, first thing she jumps Into the puppy pen so I can get in and quickly remove all the poopy papers and bedding without 20 little paws running through it lol. we listen to an 18 minute video every morning after breakfast of (obnoxious)sounds such as doorbells. Knocks dogs barking thunderstorms etc. we are entering into our 6th week. How did we get here so fast 😟

Superbowl Sunday Alice 2024

Today is our Super Bowl Sunday 😂😂this is a great new experience for them. It’s a rocking bowl and it works on confidence building of uneven surfaces. And they love being the king of the bowl and barking at each other lol.

It’s bed time. We just had late night snack And we’re done for the day. We sleep all night. (Well we would be instantly awake if you came in the room ) and one or two of us want to play a little longer and sometimes play intervention needs to happen 😅😅

Here we are at 5 weeks old. Morning clean ups are taking longer and longer. 😂😂breakfast and cleanup is over and we have taken over the entire room for play time with a new big toy we are doing baths and hopefully 5 week old pictures later today

Desensitization of common triggers

An important part of our day now that puppies are getting older and listening to sounds is playing sounds like thunderstorms , fireworks, door bells. Knocking at the door sounds. And we have started this during mid week 4

Life is so much richer with a Berner

I couldn't imagine not having a dog in my life, and we have had a few breeds, but the Bernese Mountain dog top them all. Why, they are funny, loyal, totally in love and connected with their family, smart, playful, did i mention loving, love to travel in vehicles, swim, play with kids large and small, love to hang out with you wherever you are, dont need a whole ton of energetic exercise, but love to go for long hikes with you, they are obedient, slightly stubborn but very easy to train, they do dig a few holes when bored, but thats a minor compared to everything they give back.
