Due to owning many pets and having sensitivity issues of my own, I've been making my own cleaners for years. Decades actually. I honestly can't remember the last time I bought a cleaning product.

Due to personal allergies, I run 3 air purifiers PLUS have a merve filter in my furnace. And I have a wealth of plants in the home as well.

When we know better, we can do better.

How's the air in your home?

It's happening. Let's hope this goes according to plans. Now it's up to Lumi to come into heat so we can get the ball rolling.

If you know of anyone interested in the possibility of future standard poodle pups likely worthy of service work, or just amazing poodles in general with fabulous temperaments, please share.

Parents are health tested and have clean titles.

Coming soon...... If all goes according to plan. Taking reservations. For now, all all deposits are refundable, once pregnancy is confirmed and viable, deposits will be non refundable.

Oh my goodness, I'm getting excited. The Countdown is on. We are just waiting for Lumi to go into heat next, and we will get the party started. If all goes well, pups should be on the ground in april.

Both dogs were chosen for service work. Both dogs are service dogs in training. Both dogs will hopefully have their public access testing done this year. This will likely be the only litter from either as they have jobs to focus on. Sirius is going for more titles, I may or may not title Lumi in a few CKC events..... To be determined, as I do have a lot on my plate.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask me.

Happy new year! Welcome to 2024. As I mentioned there would be changes happening to Polaris Grooming and Training. I wish I could say this would be good news and good changes, but it's not.

My husband was diagnosed with primary progressive multiple sclerosis in November. It's been a long road leading up to this diagnosis with a lot of issues developing over the course of the past year. We don't have a blueprint to follow with this diagnosis, so we don't know how quickly or slowly this will advance or how severe his symptoms will become. So what does this mean for my business?

It means my business will slowly take a back seat as I'm needed more at home. I've been downsizing grooming anyhow as it's too physically demanding on my tiny body. I'll be keeping my existing clients. You guys don't need to worry about finding a new groomer. As for new clients, it'll be very limited if I take on new clients. As for training, yes I'll still take on some training clients here and there as I can.

This won't be a fast transition, it'll be based on how quickly my husbands symptoms progress. Please still book your regular appointments, still follow your schedule, just know that if it's a bad day I may need to reschedule you. Grooming helps me to keep myself engaged and helps to keep me sane.

This clearly isn't the news we wanted to hear, this isn't the path we would have chosen, but we are here none the less.

Polaris Grooming and Training would like to wish everyone a merry Christmas, happy holidays, happy new year, and every other holiday for the season.

May your holiday season be filled with joy and happiness.

I have an announcement coming in the new year, which will mean some changes for Polaris Grooming and Training.

I'm considering adding small PET GOAT grooming into my business. When I say small, I mean silkie fainting, pygmy, nigerian dwarf and the like. No large dairy goats or any other large goats. Small breeds only. Preferably no bucks unless not in rutt, and not aggressive.

If this is something you'd consider for your pet goats, please let me know. I'd need to add some supplies to my already existing supplies, but if the interest is there, it's something I'd consider. I own goats already, one of which will require regular grooming.

Pls share with someone who may be interested in this service.

I worked my butt off on this girl today. And I'm proud of it. 3 hrs of work, it's extremely technical and you need to know how to read the dogs body, because this clip is different on every dog based on their structure. There are key markers to follow on every dog which I'm just learning about. This clip isn't in my groomers book, it's a clip I learned from watching poodle masters do their work.

Before and after of miss Lumi.

I'm gearing up for a potential "date" with a male in February, and I need her looking her best for the photos.

11/18/2023

Good morning. I am pleased to announce Polaris Grooming and Training is re-open for business. However, I am not running at full capacity due to ongoing personal matters. I am not in a position to work as much as I want to, or take on many new clients. So my hours remain the same, but it may mean only one apt per day vs 2.

I'll be accepting puppies 6 months or less, OR small/medium adult dogs that have a clean grooming history with no behaviour issues.

For now, I am having to focus on small - medium dogs ONLY (if you are a previous client, you remain a client). What is a small to medium size dog, well this means no larger than 40 lbs. I no longer have my "assistant" to help me with dogs who need a extra set of hands getting in and out of my tub or on my table, so I'm setting a limit.

Please be patient, I may have to cancel your apt last minute, as we have a whack of medical apts coming in the very near future, and we have to live one day at a time right now.

If you are in the market for a moyen poodle (medium size, between standard and toy, in about the 35 lb mark), please call Kathy. She's one of my mentors for the whole breeding program I'm doing with Lumi and she produces some amazing poodles. She has a vast knowledge of poodles, produces stunning poodles worthy of the show ring, an agility champion or a couch buddy. It doesn't matter what lifestyle you have, her poodles will fit right in.

She has one perfect little boy left who would make a great addition to anyone's home. I'd love to meet him for grooming as well! Please let's find this boy a home here in manitoba.

Standard Poodles have a unique makeup, with certain sensitivities to keep in mind for their best health and happiness. We at Kalonece are deeply committed to nurturing them in the healthiest environment possible, and we'd love to share some tips with our poodle-loving community:

Head on over to Luminescent Poodles. Lumi has all her health testing complete now and is cleared to be a mama! Next up, getting interest in some amazing temperament poodles. I'll be moving forward with her public access testing as well for her to become an "official" service dog. Please like and follow so I can get more visibility. She's on Instagram too! Please give her a follow.

Do you know of anyone in the market for some large standard poodles with wonderful temperaments geared towards service or therapy work for both psychiatric and mobility? Health checked parents, clean titles, CKC and UKC registered, and some super fun and quirky poodle personalities (plus a rainbow of colour options will be available). Please share my poodle page. Did you know Lumi is on Instagram too? I've just created an account for her. Please follow along. Her handle is linked in the "pinned post".

I have fully trained Lumi myself to be a service dog. Every single skill she has was taught to her by me. She does anxiety interruption, mobility assistance, retrieval, deep pressure therapy, and is just cool to be around. She's incredibly attentive and sensitive. She's very intune with me and my emotions and she's always got a watchful eye on me. She can and does alert when at home off vest, and when out in public on vest. Pups from her will be ideal candidates for service and or therapy work. These are NOT small poodles. These are full size, tall, and on the larger end of the spectrum for size.

Part of owning a service poodle, is the being amazed by the ability in which they learn their own skills as they are always thinking 2 steps ahead.

This is a perfect example. I didn't ask her not to come down the steps, she decided because she made a mistake, which affected me, so she's simply not allowed to go down the steps unless I am using her as a mobility aide, unless I tell her it's ok. So now she will remain at the top of the steps, if I have gone down without her and will cry to ask come down the steps when I have forgotten about her. 😂😂

I can not stress this enough. I've experienced this personally from a groomer point of view with clients dropping off their dogs, and from an owner point of view when my husbands former service dog refused to go near him when he was having a ptsd episode and was "unregulated". Dogs have senses way more sensitive than ours and our actions and reactions affect them in ways we don't even realize.

Be mindful of your energy and do some self check ins if your dog is refusing to listen to you or come near you. They know us better then we do sometimes.

https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=827299136056045&id=100063278986867&mibextid=ZbWKwL

⚠️ NEVER underestimate the impact that YOUR stress levels have on your horses and dogs! ⚠️

This is Herx coming down after a week's worth of absorbing my study deadline stress. Today was the last day. You can see the effect my compounding study stress has had on my dog but you don't notice it until there is contrast and the stress is gone.

How does this happen?

Both horses and dogs have the ability to smell something you can't...
Glucocorticoids (cortisol) and adrenaline.

These are hormones and neurohormones that are produced when the mind experiences stress/trauma.

Cortisol in particular is a hormone that, when released in high levels, can be sustained at high levels, unlike adrenaline that is fast acting but also fast to deplete.

Cortisol is an essential hormone for consciousness and alertness, but when secreted in prolonged high amounts has some negative mental, emotional and physical effects.

When you experience compounding stress you won't necessarily notice it because it is slowly compounding (like building blocks of lego).

What you may eventually notice is:
🧨 you become a little less tolerant to things you would normally tolerate
🧨 you may become a little more over sensitive mentally and emotionally
🧨 you may experience memory loss
🧨 you may struggle with a lack impulse control
🧨you may have problems with reasoning and risk assessment
🧨 you might find you struggle with attention and focus
🧨 you may develop problems getting to sleep or staying asleep (insomnia)
🧨 you may find you might develop some anxiety and/or depression
🧨 you may have difficulties regulating your emotions
🧨 you may experience sensory overload problems
🧨 you may find you do things that help you feel distracted from your emotions and stay stimulated as much as possible

These things slowly creep in without you knowing it.

In the meantime, your dog is smelling the little fluctuations and surges in your cortisol levels as the baseline rises to new levels, your horse is smelling it to!

You can't smell cortisol so you aren't even aware that your dog or horse is responding to the information you are unknowingly and unconsciously giving them.

⚠️ This scent is a warning system to your dogs and horses ⚠️
This scent says "I feel under threat, be alert and vigilant of me and around me".

When you release this scent, you will display corresponding microexpressions in your body language to. So now your body smells like danger and your body looks like danger. This is a lot of information for your dog and horse. It speaks VOLUMES and 100% trumps ANYTHING you say verbally to your animal. They'll believe EVERYTHING your smell and body says over what your words say.

And we wonder why our dogs and horses don't want to partner up when we want them to!

🫵 So check in with yourself first.
🫵 Do some deep breathing.
🫵 Check your body for areas that are holding tension.
🫵 Acknowledge any emotions that you're holding on to without having an opinion or validation.
🫵 Data dump whatever thoughts are running around in your head.
🫵 Take a walk and MAKE time for yourself
🫵 SLOW YOUR MOVEMENT DOWN!!!

Happy brain training 🧠
Charlotte 😊

Polaris Grooming and Training got to welcome Bella and Blue! They are very nervous dogs and kept trying to flip over on their backs, or lay totally flat and become invisible. I wasn't fooled, and was able to still see them, much to their dismay.

I took my time and worked at their pace. I must not have tortured them too badly, because they HAPPILY accepted treats!

I forgot to take a picture of Bella before her groom, so she got a mid-groom shot.

Someone got a groom today. This is an old trim, but she's not long enough to set the full lines of this trim, so I'm going to work on growing her out this is a modified town and country clip with a French mustache.

It's a work in progress to bring it all into balance. It'll take some time and patience on my part. Not sure I'll be able to do the full clip as we head into "burr" season, plus we just got a pool. 😂😂

CKC, the Canadian kennel club, has a strict code of ethics for breeders which must be followed.

I've recently been on the receiving end of this code of ethics which may likely be enforced on my behalf.

As I posted previously, I had an issue with Lumi's breeder. She made a mistake and instead of owning it, she tried to cover her butt with lies and made up stories. Once the truth came to light she quickly changed her tune, but it may have been too late. This mistake, because of how she chose to handle it, may be extremely costly on her end as a result regardless of the correct paperwork now being issued for my dog. Even with the costs involved, there is a possibility of her CKC title being stripped. This breeder continues to fight with CKC as they don't believe they should be forced to follow the code of ethics, which is the key difference between breeders who only care about making money, and breeders who take the time to register their dogs or be responsible for their dogs and their breeding status as a breeder.

I have the correct documents in my hands now and that's all I really cared about on the end.

Now what does this have to do with grooming or training? Well it has to do with dogs. When you get a dog, that is a purebred, with paperwork and ckc registration, this means there is a governing body taking care of you and your dog. They make sure the breeder you are dealing with, is honest, reputable and kept responsible. You know you are getting a quality dog from those who take the time to register and breed under the CKC name. Which means good body structure, coat quality, temperament and other things, AS WELL AS the breeder being kept in check and being held responsible for their mistakes..... Unlike a backyard breeder.

So when choosing your breeder, whether it be CKC registered or backyard breeders, please do your research and VET YOUR BREEDER. Sometimes even word of mouth isn't the only thing you should take into consideration. Choosing a dog is a lifetime commitment for that dog. You want to have a healthy dog that comes from a breeder with morals and ethics because your dog is an extension of you and your family.

I'm learning a lot about the ins and outs of CKC and breeding ethics as a whole. I hope to be able to provide my future puppy owners with a wonderful relationship between us, and be held responsible to the CKC code of ethics as well as my own code of ethics.

06/15/2023

July 23 I have a CKC hearing regarding Lumi's parentage. This has been a battle I didn't want to fight or expect to fight when I was put in touch with this breeder. All because the breeder made an error when she put the wrong mother for Lumi on the CKC registration paperwork and refuses to admit her error. This means if I was to breed her, this could tarnish my name as a future breeder with ckc as my documents are falsified. She also proceeded to try to control the narrative and strip me of the breeding rights I was given, by her, and CKC, stating that I signed a private contract between her and I and that I had to follow her contract of no breeding, unless she has given me permission, but has since changed her mind, failure to do so, would result in me giving up my dog as well as a 10k charge against me. Except, this signed contract doesn't exist as I never signed one. I have breeding rights via CKC and there is nothing she can do about that, regardless of what she threatens me with. There has been so much drama over a mistake she made and is refusing to admit. She's attempted to rake my name through the mud with CKC with a bunch of made up information. This is really sad for a supposed reputable breeder.

It's been a long battle many many months long. If you are looking into getting a CKC registered breed, please vet your breeders extremely well, ask others about the breeder, contact ckc and see if there is any complaints, and talk to people as a whole, and know what you are signing up for. Pay attention to contracts and ask questions.m. This woman apparently has a good reputation, honestly I don't know where this all went wrong.

I would NOT recommend this breeder to ANYONE. She has been an awful person to deal with not only as a person and a breeder, but the fact she isn't willing to own up to her mistake is the worst part. Which means not only my dog is affected with wrong information, but at a minimum 1 other, possibly many more dogs with wrong information listed.

I hope my learning experience here can help others who may end up in my shoes, which is why I've made this post. If you'd like the name of this breeder, as someone to be wary of, please private message me as I have zero interest in sharing her information publically.

Buyer beware.

Picture of Lumi, who has has 3/4 of her health testing requirements for standard poodles to go ahead with healthy breeding stock. Because I want to have a good reputation as a breeder, and I won't make the same mistakes she's made. I want to be someone willing to admit fault, fix my mistakes and admit if I'm wrong, opposed to pointing fingers and blaming others for my mistakes.

I got to see Miss Precious the 6 month old puppy this morning, and I forgot to take a before shot, but she wasn't in good shape to no fault of the owners. I did somehow manage to get an after shot even though she's a wiggly little worm and wouldn't sit still to even acknowledge my existence. You should have heard all the strange noises I was making simply to get her attention.. 😂😂

Here is Miss princess pea, AFTER her groom.

Education corner: if you have a dog in longer coat or any length over half an inch (1cm), you need to brush regularily. Especially important if the dog gets wet. This means swimming, in the rain, playing in a puddle, bathing it.... Any of these reasons means you HAVE TO BRUSH AND DRY THE DOG IMMEDIATELY AFTER. If you can't dry the dog, that's ok towel dry is fine, but you've got to brush the coat, or the dog will end up matted to the skin, and likely need to be shaved naked by the groomer. Brush from the skin outwards. Using either a slicker brush or a metal comb.

Dexter passed away peacefully overnight in our home on Tuesday night/Wednesday morning.

We buried him in the yard and had a nice little ceremony for him with just Steph and I. He was buried with one of my shoes - no not a pair, just a single shoe (anyone who knows Dexter knows he was always stealing ONE shoe from someone, anyone really 😂😂). I'm sure you've seen videos I've shared here of "find the duck", well Dexter won the game and was buried with the duck as well. A pair of goggles from Zach as they always swam together, and a touque from one of mikayla's stuffed animals as he loved to steal stuffed animals.

We will put a marker stone with his name on it, and I'm going to plant some flowers around his plot as well. There will be a chair permenently placed there for anyone who needs an ear, as Dexter was the best listener.

The dogs are doing extremely well, as are the cats, and I think that because they were here and understand what happened, there is no wondering where he is, like if he was euthanized by the vet at the clinic. It was a very peaceful and calm way to go for closure for everyone.

RIP my old boy, may you run free over the rainbow bridge with your shoe and your duck. Swim in all the lakes you can, and steal all the stuffed animals your heart desires. You will be dearly missed my old friend.

Polaris Grooming and Training will be closed due to personal reasons for the remainder of this week and next.

It's time for our old boy Dexter to head to the rainbow bridge as he's taken a turn this weekend and isn't doing well. I'm simply keeping him comfortable as best as I can, until Thursday morning.

Almost 14 long years he's been with us. He's lived an amazing life and never turned down any adventure or found any reason to be unhappy in his lifetime. Always with a smile on his face and the happiest of tails, he is well loved and will be missed dearly.

I hope you rest well my old friend.

This is why it is so important to ignore service dogs when you see them out in public.

One single second it all it takes to possibly miss a signal from the handler, that the dog needs to alert for. This could have life altering consequences for some handlers.

Please just ignore dogs and handlers when you see them. No smiles, no "hello" no attempts to pat the dog. Just give us space and let us go about our day.
