This rainy weather has us dreaming about spring…

Our first mare up to foal in March is Sedona. She’s the most easy going Kiger we’ve ever had and will be 22 this spring. She’s bred to Patron and this will be our first foal from her. 🤎

Sedona is an exceptional producer, with generations of offspring across the US, Canada and Europe. She is the dam, grand dam and great grand dam of some top quality Kigers. She is also a living relative of Donner, the stallion used as an inspiration for the movie “Spirit”.

A beautiful grey kiger in Finland.

Many years ago there were some greys on the Kiger HMA. The Kiger registry does not allow grey horses to be registered in the traditional category so most breeders stopped breeding them. But they sure are pretty 🩶

This is Ute’s filly, who is a wild and very protective mom. So her filly has had the least amount of handling until now. But she’s catching up quick!

A big day for the youngsters yesterday. They have all been weaned and are doing fantastic. Moms are enjoying a well deserved break. 🌻

We wait to wean until the foals are 5-6 months old. Although nutritionally they don’t get much from their mothers after 4 months, they gain a lot of confidence and social skills by staying with their dams for a bit longer. At this point the foals are naturally spending more and more time away from their dams and interacting with other herd mates.

In the wild, many foals will remain with their dams for over a year, however that may not always be good for the dams physical condition. We try to find a balance between the two worlds where the foals are emotionally more mature, but not so independent that they don’t want to bond with their humans. 🤎🩶🧡
