As pets age, so do their kidneys, hormones, and urinary systems...which means incontinence and recurring UTIs become common (and frustrating) concerns for many pet parents.

And while these issues are especially common in seniors, they can affect younger pets too, especially after early spays or due to anatomical or hormonal factors.

This Sunday at 12pm EST on the Inside Scoop, Drs. Steve & Kären Marsden join us to share ways to support your pet’s urinary health and reduce the likelihood of accidents, infections, and discomfort…at any age!

We’ll cover:

💧 Why Older Pets Become Incontinent - Three most effective natural remedies to help manage it

🔁 Recurrent UTIs in Dogs & Cats - Why they often return and the limitations of cranberry-based solutions.

🌿 Herbal Support for Senior Pets - A time-tested botanical shown to support kidney function and brain health

✂️ Spay Incontinence & Ovary-Sparing Spays - Understanding the hormonal link to incontinence

PET FOOD COMPANIES: THIS IS HOW YOU BUILD TRUST ⬇️. If you manufacture pet food, you have an ethical responsibility to disclose a complete nutrient profile (yes, every amount of 27+ individual vitamins, minerals and fatty acids in the diet, as compared to the nutrient standard the food was formulated to) to every single one of your customers that are buying your food and feeding your products to their beloved pets.
Yet less than 10% of companies will provide this crucial information. 🤬
Call or email your pet food company and ask for a complete nutritional analysis; most likely they will ask what two or three specific nutrients you want to know about (um… ALL OF THEM?!?!). They will refuse to provide all nutrient levels. Even worse, some raw food companies I’ve contacted have informed me they haven’t checked a complete nutritional profile of the food they’re selling 😳 (I do not recommend supporting brands who don’t know what nutrients could be missing from the diets they are selling you). The standard answer I’ve received from almost every pet food company (including all types of pet food—kibble, canned, freeze dried, raw, etc) is their nutrient profiles are “proprietary”. What?! When did assuring minimum nutrient requirements become a secret?
As veterinarians, if you request nutrient profiles on prescription diets we get the same response: we cannot have access to the nutritional data sick patients are being fed because it’s also “proprietary“🤯.
This is completely unacceptable, but guess what… companies get away with it because you, the consumers, don’t insist on nutritional transparency from the companies you are supporting.
Demand better and companies will do better.
I am so incredibly grateful that there are a handful of companies that are role modeling what needs to happen in the world of pet food: be proud of your nutritional profiles, and communicate with veterinarians!
Here’s an example of company that just sent an email stating they’ve added a new feature to their customer portal that allows vets to have direct access to dietary profiles, which can be uploaded into the veterinary patient files. Amazing!
To Mars, Purina, Science Diet, and all the other companies unwilling to disclose what levels of nutrients are in your foods… we the people, and vets trying to keep pets well or recover from illnesses, we all deserve better.
Please, call your company and share what they say here in the comments. We can start a knowledge network of brands doing it better. 😻⬇️

Most dogs are routinely spayed or neutered — often as a requirement for adoption. While this helps control the pet population, it also removes the ovaries or te**es, along with their natural hormones, such as estrogen and testosterone.

In people, hormone loss due to surgery or illness is often treated with hormone therapy. So why not explore hormone restoration for dogs? The idea is simple: restoring what’s been lost can improve long-term health.

5 Science-Backed Hot Spot Remedies for Pets

Hot spots, also called moist dermatitis or "summer sores😣," are inflamed🔥 or infected areas on your dog’s skin that develop when a minor irritation or wound stays moist. These spots are painful and can quickly worsen as bacteria🦠 spread.

The minute you see your pup licking or focusing on one area of their body, immediately disinfect🧼 the area with dilute povidone iodine twice daily. Apply one of these soothing remedies on the photo, as directed. It’s very important to disinfect the skin wound at least twice a day. Trimming or shaving the hair around the wound makes for easier and less messy treatment and makes the wound easier to clean.

In this week’s episode of Inside Scoop, we’re diving into the real causes behind these common summertime issues—and how to treat and prevent them using safe, natural remedies.
Join us this Sunday at 12pm EST as we cover:

Recent research on the microbiome has found a connection between changes in gut bacteria and chronic skin problems, through what’s known as the gut–skin axis. In dogs with canine atopic dermatitis (cAD), or skin allergies, studies have shown changes in both the gut and skin microbiota. This suggests that adjusting the microbiota could help manage cAD.

Probiotics are live, helpful bacteria that, when given in the right amounts, can improve health. They support the gut by strengthening its lining, helping the immune system, and producing useful compounds. Probiotics also compete with harmful bacteria for nutrients and make natural substances like short-chain fatty acids that help reduce bad bacteria in the gut.

Research has found that dogs with canine atopic dermatitis often have an imbalance in their gut microbiome, which gets worse as the skin condition becomes more severe. There is a strong link between this imbalance and lower gut bacteria diversity, as well as higher clinical scores. This suggests that gut microbiota imbalances may play a role in causing or worsening cAD.

Got a dog 🐕 with suspicious symptoms like fatigue 🫩, skin and coat issues, loss of appetite, and increased thirst?

These symptoms might not just be “aging” or “allergies.” They could be signs your dog’s immune system is attacking its own body.

Autoimmune conditions are often silent, slow-moving, and misdiagnosed. And for many dogs, the first thing prescribed is high doses of steroids. While this approach can reduce inflammation fast, it also carries risks like liver stress, muscle wasting, and immune suppression that isn’t always effective, or can create complications down the road.

This Sunday on the Inside Scoop, join us as we explain and discuss:

🔎 How to recognize early signs of thyroid and autoimmune issues.

💊 When steroids help—and when they may be making things worse.

🦠 Alternatives to reduce inflammation, support immune balance, and address the root cause.

💉 What to know about vaccinating dogs with autoimmune conditions.

🧪 What tests can uncover what’s really going on?

We'll also share tips and protocols that support the thyroid, and nourish the gut and nervous system.

Join us Sunday at 12pm EST! If your pet’s symptoms feel “off” but no one has clear answers, you won’t want to miss this episode.
