** Edit due to rumors - We do NOT have any cases of EHV at our farm. The news article was to help people understand the disease. Fortunately we have never personally dealt with this virus and our aim is to keep our herd safe which is why we ask people to not visit our farm if they've been at others. Thank you**
We ask at this time that our clients (lessons and boarders) do not visit other horse farms until this outbreak is under control. We would like to keep our herd as safe as possible.
Thank you for your understanding 💕
We will have a foot bath for everyone to use as they enter the barn. Just step in for 10 seconds after you've knocked the dirt off your footwear.
Equine Herpes Myeloencephalopathy Recently Diagnosed in Waterloo County
On January 7, 2023, The Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) notified our clinic of a confirmed case of equine herpes myeloencephalopathy (EHM), caused by equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) infection, at an equine facility in Waterloo County. It is our understanding that some horses at this facility have unfortunately died from the disease.
Of the nine different herpesviruses that can infect horses, EHV-1 and 4 are known for causing the most morbidity (sickness). Both EHV 1 and 4 can cause respiratory disease. EHV-1 is also associated with abortion in mares, and in rare circumstances, such as the current outbreak, it can cause severe neurologic disease. As with human herpesviruses – such as those that cause cold sores – equine herpesviruses can live dormant, or latently, within the horse for all of its life. During periods of stress or immunosuppression, a chronically infected horse can start shedding virus again.
A fever (greater than 101.5 °F or 38.6 °C) may be the first indication of infection. The temperature of potentially exposed animals should be monitored and recorded twice daily for 21 days and any abnormalities discussed with a veterinarian. Neurological signs, if they develop, may include loss of balance, hind-limb weakness, difficulty urinating, decreased tail tone, depression and being down and unable to rise. It is important that a veterinarian assess horses demonstrating neurological signs since it can be difficult to distinguish this from other serious diseases such as rabies.
EHV-1 infection is easily spread to other horses by nose-to-nose or close contact with an infected horse, by sharing contaminated equipment including bits, buckets and towels or by the clothing and hands of people who have recently had contact with an infected horse.
Prevention is the best medicine. Biosecurity is key to preventing the spread of EHV-1. Implementing routine biosecurity measures is the best way to minimize viral spread and should be in place at all times to prevent a disease outbreak. Such measures include hand hygiene and basic cleaning and disinfection practices. Fresh clothing and boots should be worn by all boarders when going to the stable. A footbath at the entrance to the stable is also a great way to ensure no pathogens get dragged in. Horses that have been shipped long distances should be segregated for 14 days prior to entering the general population. While this current outbreak is active, it would be wise for other stables in the area to restrict their boarders from visiting other stables, as much as possible. At a minimum, fresh, clean, clothing and boots should be worn between stables.
EHV-1 vaccines marketed for prevention of respiratory disease may reduce viral shedding but are not protective against developing the neurological form of the disease in the vaccinated animal. This includes the vaccines used by the Milverton-Wellesley Veterinary Services, including Vetera Gold, Vetera 2XP, and Calvenza.

We hope everyone had a wonderfully holiday season!
We've been getting many requests for summer camp dates for 2023. I will have these done and posted in the next week or so. As always, registration will open first to families that have attended our programs last year, and then we will open remaining spots to everyone.

As a few of you have heard, the last few days we've had complications with Dragon (one of our best school horses). It appears that he needs the sinus membrane removed as it is retaining bacteria and not allowing him to fully heal. OVC is able to do this for $2500. I'm not sure if we can raise this or not..... it's his only chance, otherwise we will have to euthanize him. I'm unfortunately totally out of funds due to his previous bills over the past 4 months battling this sinus issue.
Please let me know if anyone can help save this special guy.
Thanks again, A💔

As of today, Run 2 You continues to remain closed due to Covid-19. At this time, we cannot predict when the state of emergency will be lifted, allowing us to return to business as usual. In the meantime, our school horses’ basic needs still must be met. The cost to feed and care for our horses is significant, and with no income, we are feeling the strain. This is an extremely difficult time for us, and we are asking for your help. Please consider making a donation to help support our school horses.
Option 1: Sponsor A School Horse
$150/month will provide feed and hay for one horse or pony
$50-$100/month will provide bedding, farrier and veterinary care for one horse or pony
$200 - $250/month will meet all of the needs of one horse or pony
Please tell us your name and the name of the horse or pony you would like to sponsor.
Option 2: Voluntary gift to Run 2 You Stables
Contributions in any amount would be greatly appreciated, and can be sent via e-transfer to [email protected]. Thank you very much for your support and we look forward to better days and seeing you back at the farm.
With every gift, please let us know which horse/pony you would like a picture of.
With love and thanks,
Run 2 You Stables

*All programs are running as normal*
Horseback riding by definition requires social distancing, which is recommended by health professionals to help limit the exposure to the COVID-19 virus.
As our last post stated, please ensure good personal hygiene (washing hands with soap and water), personal space of at least 6 feet, tack will be disinfected.
If you have travelled or been sick in the last week, please stay home for 14 days.
Please do not bring friends to visit the farm, only current clients should be at the barn during this time.
Thank you

COVID-19
The health, safety and well-being of our clients is Run 2 You Stables’s top priority and we are following the lead of Canadian public health authorities at this important time. We are committed to providing a safe experience at R2U for all.
First and foremost, we want to assure our clients that we are taking all appropriate measures to ensure the strict standard of cleanliness and that we have existing plans and training protocols in place to ensure they stay that way.
We have implemented additional measures to ensure your safety as well as the safety of our team including:
• Hand-washing Station in the barn with antibacterial soap
• Disinfectant sprays/hand sanitizer will be available once stores stock them again
• All surfaces will be wiped down on regular basis
• We ask that people keep extra personal space, do not shake hands, etc.
If you have traveled recently or are in close contact with those that have traveled recently, we ask that you do not visit the barn for 14 days. Also, if you, or anyone you are in close contact with, has a fever, cough or otherwise feels unwell please do not visit the barn until all symptoms have cleared or 14 days have passed.
We do have immune compromised students/boarders so we need to be diligent in keeping our safe standards of cleanliness.
We plan on keeping all programs up and running as always.
Thank-you for your understanding and help in keeping the germs at bay!
