Sweet 14-week-old Golden Retriever puppy Percy is on the road to recovery after spending some time in our ICU over the weekend! He was an excellent patient and feels better already thanks to some time in our state-of-the-art oxygen kennel. In this photo he had popped his little head out to say hello to our staff during one of his treatments, and we don’t think he could get any cuter!

How Percy ended up spending the weekend with us is an important story that his caring owners allowed us to share to help keep other pets safe. Percy and his big brother were rough-housing, when Percy’s collar got stuck on his brother’s mouth. Percy panicked when he was suddenly stuck, and while twisting around trying to escape he caused his collar to become even tighter around his neck! Thankfully their owner noticed quickly that something was wrong and freed Percy before he lost consciousness. When his owners rushed him to see our ER team, Percy was struggling to breathe, drooling profusely, and very distressed. Radiographs showed that Percy had fluid in his lungs (non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema) caused by the time he spent struggling to breathe. Pain medications and oxygen support quickly helped Percy breathe more comfortably as his body worked to heal from the experience.

The strangulation hazard of dogs playing while wearing collars is a hidden danger that many pet owners don’t know about, but a story we hear with some frequency in the ER. Thankfully Percy’s story has a happy ending, but if his owners hadn’t been there to intervene it could have been tragic. Please, get your pups microchipped so they have a permanent form of identification, and then take those collars off when they’re playing with or interacting with other dogs!

🌿5 Dog Friendly Landscaping Tips:

🐾Use safe mulch:
Most mulches are safe for dogs. However, some veterinarians have expressed concerns about the use of cocoa bean shell mulch. Using shredded pine, cedar or hemlock bark is much safer.

🐾Choose pet safe plants:
When selecting plants for your landscaping, in addition to making sure they aren’t toxic to pets, consider plants that will stand up to play and rough-housing. Be sure the plants are sturdy enough, but also that they don’t have any thorns, thistles or burrs that may get caught in your dog’s paws or fur.

🐾Use natural fertilizers:
Generally, traditional lawn care fertilizers are not safe for dogs. Frequently, fertilizers use synthetic ingredients and chemicals such as iron, carbamates, or compost organophosphates, leading to various health issues in dogs. Choose to use natural fertilizers composed of manure, seaw**d, compost and fish emulsion.

🐾Be cautious with pesticides and herbicides:
Most over-the-counter w**d and bug killers are generally safe around dogs if used correctly and allowed to dry on treated areas. However, exposure to certain treatments, especially when wet, can cause health issues ranging from stomach upsets to severe poisoning. It's really important to read the label u and follow application guidelines. You should also prevent your dog from accessing treated areas until they're dry, and seek immediate veterinary care if your dog does come into contact with any chemical product.

🐾Create paths:
Some dog breeds love to patrol their territory, so create some paths throughout the yard. Use patio pavers, brick, much or pebbles. And if you use any landscaping plants on the path’s edges, be sure they are safe for pets.

Handling is an important activity for young puppies and we recommend working on it routinely, however it’s not too late even if you have an adult dog who is wary of being examined or groomed.

Below are some activities you can role play at home to get your pooch more comfortable.

Remember to move slowly, use gentle but firm pressure when handling, and speak kindly and softly. The energy should be relaxing, like being at the spa for a massage.

🐾Check inside the ears (look for brown gunk/yucky odor - signs of ear infection)
🐾Check the mouth (notice gum and tongue color, look for tooth decay, signs of irritation or anything unusual)
🐾Gently lift above the eye lid (as if you were putting eye drops in)
🐾Touch the feet (role play nail trims) examine the nails and pads thoroughly
🐾Touch down the whole body (NOT PETTING) as if assessing for injury, lumps, etc. Include entire body, legs and tail (if available)
🐾Practice putting any walking equipment on. This may include collars, harnesses, or face haltis.

If your dog is already fairly aggressive about any part of handling (like nail trims for example) then you may also wish to get your dog comfortable practicing wearing a muzzle.

Vet Tip!

Although our veterinarians are highly educated, getting a quick and proper diagnosis can be largely reliant on the information you’re able to provide. Since our dogs can’t speak and offer information on what’s wrong, it’s up to you to be their voice.
If something is off with your dog, photos and videos can provide much-needed insight for your vet.
Does your dog have an occasional strange limp? Make a weird coughing noise? Are they having episodes that look like they could be small seizures?
Keep your phone close by and film concerning behaviours as often as possible. I also like to keep a written log of unusual events including dates and times and any details I may think could be relevant to the situation (what was your dog doing before the behaviour started? Was anything different about their day? Where was the location? Who was around?).

Taking your dog to the vet can be stressful so we hope this tip helps make the experience go smoother.
