It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to Diesel vom Burgimwald, the beloved German Shepherd who played Rex on the TV series Hudson and Rex. Diesel, just 8 years old, passed away from cancer last August during the filming of the show’s 7th season. The news has now been shared with us all.

Diesel touched the lives of so many, including our own, as he visited us several times with his breeder and trainer. In this photo, you can see Dr. Lechten and RVT Lisa, who was absolutely starstruck by him. Lisa shared, "He was one of the best patients I have ever worked with in my 30 years—he stole my heart!"

Our deepest condolences go out to the production team, breeder, Sherri (his trainer), and everyone who had the privilege of knowing this special dog. Diesel will always be remembered for his incredible presence, both on and off the screen. Rest in peace, Diesel. You will be missed.

In 1980, Carly graduated from Centralia College as a Registered Animal Health Technologist (AHT)(before the title RVT came into effect) She began her career locally, working for a year before moving west. In 1985, she joined AVH, which was primarily focused on large animal care at the time. In October 1989, Dr. Lechten became part of the team, leading the transition to what is now our thriving small animal practice. Carly played an integral role in supporting the growth of the practice, and in 2000, she officially became the hospital Supervisor. Although she is no longer directly involved in technical care, Carly still enjoys assisting with C-sections and helping to revive newborn puppies. Today, she focuses on client services and some administrative duties, and in her spare time, she of course loves spending time with her grandchildren. Help us send warm wishes along her way today! Congratulations Carly on your 40th Anniversary with AVH!

Well, well, well—who knew? Even when Dr. Lechten and Natalie are off gallivanting around the globe, they’re still not "chicken" to find a vet clinic! This particular chicken had a run-in with a raccoon, and the dynamic duo took it straight to a local vet clinic. Dr. Cavallini, who runs a shelter in Costa Rica, graciously let Dr. Lechten play surgeon and fix up the chicken’s battle wounds. Talk about going above and beyond the call of cluck!

Please help these little creatures🤍

Did you know ????

⭐️ They are resistant to Rabies! While it’s a common myth that opossums can be rabid, opossums’ body temperature is too low for the virus to survive like it does in other mammals, such as raccoons and bats. If you see an opossum in defense mode, such as hissing, drooling, or swaying, don’t assume it’s rabid. These are bluff behaviors used to outsmart potential predators.

⭐️ They eat ticks! Opossums eat more than 90 percent of the ticks they encounter, according to the National Park Service. Some scientists, including Rick Ostfeld from the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies, note that they can kill up to 95 percent of ticks that feed on them and eat more than 5,000 ticks in a single season! If you live in an area with ticks—or mammals who might carry ticks—that potentially spread Lyme disease, you want opossums around.

By the way, they also eat cockroaches, crickets, beetles, mice, and rats.

⭐️ They are very clean! Like the cats you may share your homes with, opossums constantly self-groom with their tongues and paws. Since they don’t have sweat glands, opossums also groom themselves to cool down in hot weather.

⭐️ They have 50 teeth! This is more than any North American land mammal!

⭐️Their name is derived from Algonquian language! Algonquians are Indigenous people who now live in Eastern Canada, originally residing in Quebec, Ontario, Upper Michigan, and Wisconsin. “Opossum” is derived from the Algonquin word “apasum,” which means white animal.

Daisy was one of those super patients that everyone loved. 🤍🐾

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our beloved COPE service dog, Daisy, at the age of 10, following a brief illness. Daisy became an integral part of the Hospice Simcoe family in 2017, after completing training with COPE and its dedicated foster families. As Ontario’s first COPE service dog to join a hospice care team, Daisy paved the way for many others, touching the lives of countless individuals.
Over her 7.5 years of service, Daisy brought comfort, joy, and a sense of peace to hundreds of residents, their families, and participants in our bereavement support programs. Her gentle and loving presence made her a cherished "celebrity" within our community.
Daisy’s memory will live on in the hearts of everyone she touched. She will be deeply missed by all of us at Hospice Simcoe, and by our partners at COPE, an accredited member of Assistance Dogs International. Her legacy of love, service, and healing will continue to inspire us all.

Rest in peace, sweet Daisy.
