September is Pain Awareness Month! Did you know 40% of dogs and cats experience some level of pain due to Osteoarthritis (OA)? OA is arthritis that develops when protective tissue in the joints deteriorates, leading to friction between the bones. Pain from OA can decrease your pet’s willingness to play or exercise. Take the Pain Checklist quiz to see if they could be showing signs of OA: https://www.zoetispetcare.com/checklist/osteoarthritis-checklist If you suspect your pet may have signs of OA, please contact us so we can help them feel their very best!

This is some wonderful news. Dogs traveling to the US do not require anything other than to be healthy, a microchip and over the age of 6 months. Owners DO need to fill out the Dog Import Form, prior to their trip and receive a receipt back to show at the border. This receipt is good for multiple trips within 6 months. The form is free but again, only good for 6 months. There is no requirement for a current rabies vaccine (at this point). For more information please click on the link provided.

There are four requirements for dogs that have ONLY been in countries that are dog-rabies free or lo

Looking for a forever home!

“Hello, I’m 5 month old German Shep mix searching for a loving home to call my own. I recently underwent veterinary care and now I’m ready for a fresh start! I’m calm and small for my age and enjoy the company of cats and other dogs. I know how to sit, play fetch and I’m great in a crate!
Car rides are a fave of mine and I’m highly motivated by treats which makes training me a breeze with a little patience and time.
I’ve been neutered and up to date on my vaccines. If you are interested in welcoming a little snuggle bug into your home please contact the hospital I am currently staying at.
Thanks for considering me as your new furry friend.” ❤️🐾

Our team was out today supporting the Hike&Bike for Hospice Simcoe.

What is Hospice Simcoe?

As a specialized form of healthcare, hospice palliative care aims to relieve suffering and improve the quality of life for those living with a life limiting illness, as well as their families.
Hospice palliative care addresses the specific physical, psychological, social, spiritual, and practical issues, and their associated expectations, needs, hopes and fears on an individual basis.

At Hospice Simcoe, all staff and volunteers are committed to providing such care. The individuals and families we serve are at the centre of care. They are there to assist, educate, support and guide you and your family through your journey.

Today we celebrate World Veterinary Day! Veterinarians competencies must be regarded as an essential and integral part of health at large. The application of veterinary science contributes not only to animal health and well-being but also to humans physical, mental and social well-being.

This dimension of the veterinarians’ work often remains invisible to the society but protecting and improving the health of people and their communities is an essential part of the vet profession.

All graduated veterinarians have comprehensive medical training, and regardless of their professional area of practice, are responsible, for promoting public health and food safety and security. How to we celebrate at AVH? Cake of course! If you stop in today be sure to grab your slice! Three cheers to Veterinarians not only here, but around the world!

Wishing everyone a hoppy Easter this weekend! WE have some exciting news from our veterinary family! 02/15/2024

We are now offering video consultations with a veterinarian, Dr. Elena Garde, to address medical concerns for your pet during our office hours. Examples of the types of concerns telemedicine appointments are effective for include skin issues (itchy, scratchy, or smelly), ear infections, parasite problems, vomiting or f***l concerns, mobility and joint problems (i.e., any observations of the pet limping or in pain), as well as any changes in appetite (i.e., eating less or more).

For cats, telemedicine can also treat unusual litter box habits, increases or decreases in urination volume, as well as symptoms of a viral infection (any sneezing or runny eyes). Telemedicine can also be used for follow-up care or monitoring a pet with a chronic medical condition. There are times when follow up testing (blood, urine, etc.) is recommended and will require a visit to the hospital.

Dr. Elena Garde is a colleague and friend of Dr. Lechten and is the Program Director for The Global Alliance for Animals and People. Dr. Elena grew up in rural Ontario. She spent her childhood on a farm where she developed her deep passion for animals of every kind. She got her degree in Veterinary Medicine in 2005, from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatoon and went on to complete a Masters in International Animal Health from the University of Edinburgh, Centre for Tropical Animal Diseases. In 2009, she moved to Latin America where she continued to work with dogs and cats and the many welfare problems facing communities where animals are poorly managed. Dr. Elena currently lives in southern Chile where she works at a not-for-profit small animal clinic and also practices telemedicine for Canadian clients.
Dr. Garde is available on Mondays from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. - 11 a.m.
