Training the Bed Cue: One of the most versatile cues to teach your dog. But don’t forget to train for responses even at a distance. Great job Jed! ( and Julie 😁)

Ice safety is often a topic of discussion among pet parents, and many pet parents have had a personal scare with their furry friends going out onto unstable ice. It prompts the question of what can we do in those moments where our dogs chase geese, their doggie friends, or a stick out onto the ice?
There are precautions we can take. First and foremost: know your waterways. Knowing where ice can form, how deep the water is, if there is a current, etc. can help you feel prepared if Fido wanders too close to the shoreline.
Second: prevention is key. Keep your dog on a longline to give them freedom while simultaneously controlling their access to the environment, and place a floatation device on them. This will help keep them afloat if they do fall through the ice.
Thirdly: teaching cues to help control your dog’s movements at a distance. If you have your dog off leash, it is highly important to be able to give them direction at a distance regardless of distractions present. This is where the EMERGENCY STOP comes into play. This cue is designed to stop forward motion from the dog and await further instructions. It is often thought that the recall is more important than this cue, but picture this: your dog is off leash in the forest and bolts after something they see in the distance. They travel out onto thin ice, and it begins to crack. The danger of recalling your dog in that moment is that the ice may give way if they return to you. Directing them to STOP and WAIT while you call emergency services may save their life in that moment.
If your dog does go through the ice, do not go out after them. Call emergency services and await their arrival. Keep in mind that one of the biggest risks to dogs going through ice besides drowning is hypothermia. Signs of hypothermia include, shivering, sluggish movements, confusion or disorientation, musclee tremors, and pale or blue tinged mucous membranes. DO NOT WAIT to get your dog seen by a veterinarian or to see if their bo
The Calm Door Greeting:
This is probably one of the most common behaviours that dog parents struggle with. The key is to do lots of practice without anyone at the door.
Think about it, you wouldn’t compete in a sport without getting some solid training under your belt first, right? Well your dog needs the same attention to detail for their success too.

There are so many reasons why you might want to teach your dog an EMERGENCY STOP.
Maybe your dog likes to bolt, or perhaps they can become emotionally reactive to certain stimuli on the walk.
Whatever the reason, having this cue in your training repetoire can be a game changer.

Here’s a sneak peek into one of our consultation appointments today. Super proud of how well this boy is doing. Resource Guarding work takes time and patience. Emphasis is always on ensuring the dog feels safe so that we can foster a positive learning environment. Be careful of “quick fixes” as this is a complicated behaviour issue rooted in stress. #caninebehaviourconsultant #dogtrainer #resourceguarding #goldenretrievertraining #ccpdt #IAABC #dogtherapy #therapyfordogs
