Growing up my family dog was a white German Shepherd mix named W***y. W***y was a treasured member of our family for 17 years. W***y's health declined to the point that he no longer had any quality of life and was in chronic pain so we made the painful decision as a family to euthanize W***y. W***y was very nervous at the veterinary hospital and could no longer walk unassisted. The thought of taking him to the veterinary hospital for euthanasia only added to our stress and felt overwhelming. We called our long time veterinarian and he agreed to make a house call. W***y was euthanized on our family's back deck, where he had found a peaceful place to rest. He was over looking the fields and neighbouring horse farm. He wasn't scared or stressed. He was peaceful as he drifted into sleep.
Many years later I had to euthanize "my heart dog", Jersey after 12 years of being her mom and friend. I knew I wanted our goodbyes to happen at home as we had done with W***y. My husband and I wanted her to drift into sleep on her bed in front of the fireplace and we wanted the privacy to grieve the way that we wanted.
Working 8 years as a general practising veterinarian I see that many are not able to memorialize or grieve their pet the way that they want to . Euthanasias often take place in a busy, hectic hospital scheduled in-between appointments. I started this business to give pet owners/parents the opportunity to offer their pets a stress-free, peaceful passing in their home. To offer a passing that celebrates the wonderful life that they have lived.
I named the business 'Heart with Wings' because I wanted to honour my Jersey who was a big inspiration to me to become a veterinarian and to start this speciality veterinary service. I always referred to her as "my heart" hence the name "Heart With Wings".
