Soaking up all of the time with this roany pony that I can. We are not promised forever and as she ages I know that her days in the lesson program are becoming less. She has come so far with me in terms of her body condition and soundness but also deserves a proper retirement.
The good ones always seem to come in to my life so late in theirs. 🩵

PS no judging my super flattering snow suit…it’s cold. At least my hair is brushed 😉

This 🙌🏻
I have always and will always continue to be an advocate for any creature in these situations.
“Better a day early than a day late”

What does it really mean to "let them go on a good day?"

It means it will be your hardest day. It won't matter if you've never done it before, or if you're gifted a dozen good days, each good day is always the hardest one.

It means they won't know what the fuss is about, why they're getting so many treats and extra belly scratches and hugs.

It means you will second guess your decision right up to the very last moment, the very last breath. You'll second guess yourself afterwards.

They'll knicker at you when you arrive, just like any other day.

The weather, perfect. They are content. They look sound today. They are breathing well, eating well, they get up easily enough from a nap in the sun....the list goes on. Whatever issue they struggle with, today they aren't.

Today you euthanize them.

This is what going on a good day means: sending them out while they are happy, while they are healthy, while they are eating well, walking well, etc. You make the choice to do it before an emergency takes the choice away from you, before your horse has to experience any more trauma or pain.

Their last memory will be filled with love.

It'll rip your heart out every time.

We can see the patterns and the increasing trends. We can predict it a little. We can obsess over the past and worry about the future.

Fortunately, horses, all animals, live in the moment. They don't worry about those things. They aren't worried about winter. They aren't worried about July, or allergies, or progressive diseases like cushings or dsld. They don't think about the close calls they've had before, and they certainly aren't thinking about the close calls that are destined to come, as their body continues to age and break down. They just are. They are happy and healthy, or fearful and in pain, on that day, in that moment.

It is the most difficult, most loving gift we are blessed to be able to give.

And that first ice storm will come, that first deep snow, that first heat wave....and you will find a little relief, no longer doubting the choice you made.

They were happy, and safe, and loved. That is all that matters.

It is never easy. ~Kelly Meister, author

As a part of our 2025 program expansion, we will be making it a goal to add on a “client closet” that will be made available to any of our riding school students.
As we all know, life is expensive and adding on extra curriculars to already high living expenses can add a ton of strain on to an individual/family. It has ALWAYS been a priority of ours to make horses as accessible for EVERYONE as we can, and we do not want equiptment requirements to be the reason we lose out on the opportunity to welcome any of you to our program.
It is expected that those able to, still purchase and provide their own equipment but we are pleased to be investing in the option for lower income clientele to still have access to the same level of activity.

Because of this - I am looking for donations! Any used clothing you don’t reach for or your kiddos have outgrown. What is needed is listed below, I am looking for used donations before purchasing in hopes to keep my costs minimal.
Should you have anything you are open to donating, please give me a shout! It would be so appreciated!

It’s tempting to just turn our horses out as a reward the day after a competition, but turnout alone doesn't help them recover. 🦄

When we compete on the weekend and especially when combined with long hauls to our destinations, we should be sure to get our horses moving with some GENTLE exercise the next day.

This will help reduce lactic acid build up, drive blood flow to tired or sore muscles, help with lymphatic drainage, and loosen tight fascia, all things that can help prevent injury.

Turnout alone is not the equivalent of gentle biomechanical exercise. If a horse is sore and moving in compensation, being in turnout will only reinforce that compensation pattern.

Do something different like head down the trail, or do in-hand work to reinforce range of motion and gentle stretching, then let them have Tuesday off instead!

I am always learning and wanting to do better for my horses - so I was thrilled to learn this information a few weeks ago!
Our broodmare band is on grass in the summer, so we have started to supplement them with Vit E over the winter months.
The lesson horses have no access to grass and are on hay year round so they will be supplemented year round.
We just started, so will report back if we see any changes in the horses!

Fresh pasture provides an abundance of vitamin E but hay is devoid of vitamins after harvesting.

My horses have always been on VE supplementation during the winter & since moving to Arizona they have been on it full time.

However as of late I’m learning it’s not enough. 😖

The NRC recommends a daily intake of about 1000 IU per day for the average horse in light work, although many experts insist this should be higher.

I typically provide 2-3000 IU to my horses depending on their workload however after my best boy Prowler displaying odd and unusual behavior, off to the vet we went.

Over the last few months he has been becoming unpredictable, overreacting at the smallest thing, feeling out of control even at a trot & exploding for no reason (the latter resulted in bucking me off very badly).

After cervical xrays, ultrasounds, THO & hyoid scopes, the vet came up with nothing. But she agreed something was “wrong” as Prowler seemed to have vision impairment & failed his baseline neuro exam.

We started with running blood work for EPM which came back negative, so her next idea was testing for Vitamin E through which we uncovered he is dangerously low in this essential piece of nutrition. 🏥

Symptoms of VE deficiency that look like other common problems:
🩺Eye & vision changes aka: becoming spooky, reactive or nervous
🩺Muscle pain & stiffness: we often reach for the magnesium here
🩺Dry/damaged coat: more omegas are typically toted as the answer
🩺Neurological problems: often we reach for trial treatment of EPM & Lyme.

Untreated - vitamin E deficiency can cause severe issues including permanent vision problems as well as equine motor neuron disease and equine degenerative myeloencephalopathy (this is fatal).

Although we finally have a direction of Prowler’s problems, now begs the question if we found it soon enough. For me, as the ever advocate of prehab & prevention, it feels like I’ve failed my horses once again by having to learn the hard way.

He’s now on 10,000IU of natural VE per day and we will retest in 3 months 🙏 Natural VE is also the key, with liquid form being more bioavailable than powder, but both are better than synthetic. If you do feed a powder it is essential to feed an oil alongside it for optimal absorption.

Running testing for vitamin E will become a regular part of my veterinary workups for all my horses - how about you?

I do wear many hats… lol.
