*** Warning. Graphic images of surgery***

This adorable girl is Wednesday. She is an 8 year old pug mix, and earlier this week she was diagnosed with a Pyometra at Pulse Veterinary Specialists & Emergency. A Pyometra is an accumulation of pus in the uterus due to infection and surgical removal of the uterus is needed. Today that is what we did for Wednesday. She's going to spend the day with us getting loved on by our staff, and this afternoon, she will go home with her family to recover. We wish her all the best!!

Have you ever called us to get a quote for a spay or neuter surgery? We have recently streamlined our pricing lists for surgical procedures, so if you'd like to get an idea on what that means, please give us a call at 780-929-7363

August is Overweight Management Month, and we would like to spotlight Daisy, our clinic cat. For anyone who's met Daisy, or seen her pictures, it's no surprise that she is carrying a little extra chunk. Animals that are overweight or obese are more at risk to develop conditions that can impact their quality of life. This spring we made steps to make sure that Daisy is around for as long as possible. We've reduced her calorie intake, and are encouraging more exercise through play. On April 8 she weighed in at her heaviest of 6.83kg. As of this week, Daisy is down to 6.05kg. It may not seem like a lot, but for a 16 year old cat we are all so proud of her.
If your pet is carrying a little extra chunk like Daisy, please reach out to us so we can discuss ways to help your loved one

Meet Harley. He came to us for anorexia after ingesting an Aloe Vera plant. After fluids, medications, syringe feeding and so so so much love from everyone on staff, he finally ate! We are so glad to see this sweet ginger baby go home with his family to fully recover.
Hopefully next time we see Harley, it’s for a wellness exam and not because he’s sick again.

Daisy's Diary July 11

Dear Diary,

I've been hearing a lot lately about spaying and neutering pets and have learned some really interesting facts. Did you know that spaying and neutering your cats and dogs can help reduce spraying & marking, reduces roaming, can help reduce aggression, helps decrease overpopulation, and can reduce the risk of some cancers and possibly increase lifespan.
The Dr's here recommend spaying and neuter cats like me between 4 and 6 months, female dogs before their 1st heat cycle, and male dogs between 9 and 12 months.
I've already seen a lot of cats and dogs come in this month for their surgeries and am excited to meet all of the new friends who are coming in over the next couple of weeks.

Happy Spay & Neuter Month!
Daisy

Daisy's Diary, June 2024:

Dear diary, what is a hot spot?
Hot spots, also known as pyotraumatic dermatitis or acute moist dermatitis, are red, inflamed skin lesions. These can appear quickly and may contain pus. Hot spots can be found anywhere on an animal's body, with the most common sites being the head, legs and hips. These painful, itchy, smelly sores can be either very obvious or hidden beneath matted fur. Hot spots are usually caused by self-trauma when an animal scratches an area that it creates an open wound. These spots can also increase in size rapidly in a short period of time.

Common causes for hot spots could include:
- Allergies
- Reactions to insect bites
- Ear Infections
- Pyoderma (Skin infection)
- Poor Grooming
- Boredom
- Arthritis
- A**l Gland Inflammation

If you think your pet may have a hot spot please book in with your local vet!

Daisy's Diary:
Dear diary, what is proprioceptive deficit in animals?
Proprioceptive Deficit is when your animal has a lack of perception in their limbs. This will affect the way they hold their paw and leg position and the ability to move them correctly. This condition can be acute (Sudden on set) or chronic.
Symptoms may include:
-Worn nails in an abnormal pattern from dragging the limb/paw
Staggering
-Misplacement of the foot
-Not realizing when his paw it placed on its dorsal surface (top of the paw) instead of its ventral side ( its normal paw pad surface)
-Odd postures when lying down or sleeping with legs in abnormal positioning.
If you're concerned your pet may suffer from proprioceptive deficit please seek an appointment with your local vet!
