Things your riding instructor wants you to know:

1. This sport is hard. You don't get to bypass the hard…..every good rider has gone through it. You make progress, then you don't, and then you make progress again. Your riding instructor can coach you through it, but they cannot make it easy.

2. You're going to ride horses you don't want to ride. If you're teachable, you will learn from every horse you ride. Each horse in the barn can teach you if you let them. IF YOU LET THEM. Which leads me to…

3. You MUST be teachable to succeed in this sport. You must be teachable to succeed at anything, but that is another conversation. Being teachable often means going back to basics time and time and time again. If you find basics boring, then your not looking at them as an opportunity to learn. Which brings me to…..

4. This sport is a COMMITMENT. Read that, then read it again. Every sport is a commitment, but in this sport your teammate weighs 1200 lbs and speaks a different language. Good riders don't get good by riding every once in awhile….they improve because they make riding a priority and give themsevles opportunity to practice.

5. EVERY RIDE IS AN OPPORTUNITY. Even the walk ones. Even the hard ones. Every. Single. Ride. Remember when you just wished someone would lead you around on a horse? Find the happiness in just being able to RIDE. If you make every ride about what your AREN'T doing, you take the fun out of the experience for yourself, your horse, and your instructor. Just enjoy the process. Which brings me to...

6. Riding should be fun. It is work. and work isn't always fun.....but if you (or your rider) are consistently choosing other activities or find yourself not looking forward to lessons, it's time to take a break. The horses already know you don't want to be here, and you set yourself up for failure if you are already dreading the lesson before you get here.

7. You'll learn more about horses from the ground than you ever will while riding. That's why ground lessons are important, too. If you're skipping ground lessons (or the part of your lesson that takes place on the ground), you're missing out on the most important parts of the lesson. You spend far more time on the ground with horses than you do in the saddle.

8. Ask questions and communicate. If you're wondering why your coach is having you ride a particular horse or do an exercise, ask them. Then listen to their answer and refer to #3 above.

9. We are human beings. We make decisions (some of them life and death ones) every day. We balance learning for students with workloads for horses and carry the bulk of this business on our shoulders. A little courtesy goes a long way.

Of all the sports your child will try through their school years, riding is one of 3 that they may continue regularly as adults (golf and skiing are the others). People who coach riding spend the better part of their free time and much of their disposable income trying to improve their own riding and caring for the horses who help teach your child. They love this sport and teaching others…..but they all have their limits. Not all good riders are good coaches, but all good coaches will tell you that the process to get good is not an easy one.

Kova
9-Year-Old Registered Paint Gelding
15.1hh

Kova is a handsome, eye-catching 9-year-old registered Paint gelding with show experience and a personality that turns heads wherever he goes. He’s currently schooling and showing over 2’6” courses with room to go higher. He’s a fluid mover, very brave to fences, and has also been introduced to cross-country jumps—no hesitation and tons of try.

This gelding is a true character—sweet, in-your-pocket, and loves people. He’ll lick your hands like a puppy and thrives on attention. He’s great to haul, stands quietly for the farrier and baths, and is currently barefoot and sound.

However, he is not for a beginner. Kova needs a confident intermediate rider with kind hands and a patient approach. He’s still developing his balance and collection, particularly over fences, and while his auto changes are coming along, he does require the odd correction. Over fences, he can get strong and forward, so a rider with experience and feel is a must.

His one vice: Kova is ear shy and does not like his ears handled. He has made progress but still requires a calm, patient handler to continue working through this.

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone looking for a fun, athletic project with a solid foundation and a great brain. He’d be well-suited for a capable junior working with a coach, an adult amateur looking for a fun horse to develop, or someone wanting a flashy horse for hunter/jumper or eventing.

Air Quality & Your Horse: What to Know During Wildfire Season
Poor air quality isn’t just a human concern—horses are at risk too, especially during Alberta’s wildfire season.

As smoke levels rise, riders, coaches, and competition organizers should adjust plans using the Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) as a guide:

AQHI 1–3 (Low)
No changes needed. Safe for normal activity and competition.

AQHI 4–6 (Moderate)
Monitor horses—especially those with respiratory issues. Consider withdrawing if symptoms appear.

AQHI 7–10 (High)
Avoid strenuous activity. Rescheduling or modifying events is strongly recommended.

AQHI >10 (Very High)
Postponing or cancelling is advised for the safety of horses and participants.

High-risk horses include:
• Horses with heaves (equine asthma)
• Foals and seniors
• Horses recovering from recent illness

Event guidelines:
Some sanctioning bodies may cancel or postpone events when AQHI levels are high. Always check with your competition organizer or your provincial/national sport organization (e.g., AEF or EC).

At home or at the barn:
• Ensure fresh water and ventilation
• Use fans or filtration indoors
• Watch for signs like coughing, flared nostrils, fatigue, or appetite loss

📊 Check Alberta’s current AQHI forecast:

Let’s ride responsibly. Protecting your horse’s lungs is always the right call.

Looking for a great lease horse???? Here he is!

For 1/2 or Full Lease onsite only – Kova, 9-Year-Old Registered Paint Gelding

Kova is a striking 9-year-old registered Paint gelding who will get you noticed in the show ring. He has been shown extensively and is currently confidently jumping courses up to 2’6”, with the scope to go higher. He’s a fluid mover, hauls like a dream, and stands well for the farrier, bathing, and tacking up. Currently barefoot and sound.

Kova has a sweet, in-your-pocket personality—he’ll lick your hands like a puppy and thrives on attention. He loves brain games, obstacle work, and anything that challenges him mentally. He’s also been introduced to cross-country fences and took to them with no hesitation.

That said, Kova is not for a beginner. He requires a confident intermediate rider who is patient and kind. He is still developing his balance, collection, and use of his hind end over fences. While he’s learning auto lead changes, he does need rider support when he misses one. Over fences, he can get a bit strong and speedy, so a rider with soft hands and good timing is ideal.

Minimum One lesson per week is required with lease - paid separately to coach.

Important note: Kova is very ear shy and does not like his ears touched. This is a work in progress, and he needs someone who will continue helping him gain confidence in this area with patience and understanding.

Available for half or full lease as his owner is heading to university. This is a great opportunity for someone looking to further a talented gelding’s education while having fun in the show ring or out on course.
