Westhills Equine Veterinary Services, located in Parkland County, is shifting from an on-call emergency team to a dedicated overnight emergency and hospitalized case care team, and are actively recruiting:

➡️ Equine Overnight Emergency and Urgent Care RVT (Registered Veterinary Technologist)

➡️ Equine Overnight Emergency and Urgent Care Veterinary Medical Assistant

For the following shifts:
5:30 pm to 12:30 am (7 hours) and 12:00 am to 8:00 am (8 hours)

What no one tells you about owning a horse boarding facility….

•It’s loving someone else’s animal so much it hurts at times.
•It’s noticing and addressing the slightest change in a horse’s behavior, eating, or drinking habits.
•It’s staying up all night to monitor someone else’s horse when they aren’t feeling well.
•It’s an overwhelming feeling of guilt when a horse gets hurt or sick; even though there was nothing you could have done differently to prevent it.
•It’s facility overhead. There’s ALWAYS something that needs fixed or updated.
•It’s having a camera roll full of cute, silly pictures of horses you don’t own.
•It’s eating Taco Bell 3 nights in a row because it’s the only place still open when you finish chores at 11pm and you’re starving.
•It’s unplugging/plugging in water tank heaters several times throughout the day/night to try and keep the electric bill from quadrupling.
•It’s an overwhelming feeling of anguish for weeks on end when you have to tell boarders that the cost of board must go up.
•It’s working on every holiday, birthday, anniversary, and sick day.
•It’s a constant feeling of guilt for not spending enough time with your own animals.
•It’s wondering if you pay your wonderful help enough, even though they make more per hour than you do most days.
•It’s getting to know horses even better than their owners do, in some ways.
•It’s rearranging family, work, and personal commitments to take care of horses.
•It’s dreaming about that bathroom remodel you’ve always wanted, but getting new fencing installed instead.

Boarding horses is so much more than feeding, watering, and cleaning stalls. It isn’t for the faint of heart and it surely isn’t for anyone looking to get rich. It takes a village of people with a special place in their hearts for equines. To anyone that can relate, just know that you ARE APPRECIATED! 🐴💙🧡

It’s that time of year again. We are hosting two mini clinics in February and March.

Are you interested in learning barrels or other gymkhana events, or would you like to practice for the upcoming season? These clinics are ideal. They will be led by Alycia McKinney, an experienced barrel racer.

We are offering two sessions:

Barrels and Pole Bending on February 9 from 3-7pm at $150 per horse, with 6 spots available.

Gymkhana Clinic on March 2 from 3-7pm at $150 per horse, also with six spots available.
2 SPOTS LEFT

A non-refundable deposit of $25 is required to secure your spot, with final payment due by February 2 for the first session and February 23 for the second.

Something exciting is happening at Shadowlands! The first big project for 2025 is well underway! Our soon to be completed hay shed will keep our square bales nice and dry from all the crazy alberta weather!

Shadowlands Ranch is donating 2, 1 hour sessions as well so please keep the nominations coming!

Every year for Christmas, we donate 2 horse experiences to different families deserving of a special gift. We were a little bit delayed this year but here it is! We know the last few years have been challenging for many families, and everyone deserves Christmas cheer… Nominate a family or child that you believe is in need of a special gift to put under the tree for a loved one. We will offer a 1.5hr horse experience for 2 different deserving youth/adults, which will include time spent at our farm with the animals and a riding lesson. I will hand deliver certificates to two parties tomorrow within the Beaumont/Leduc/Sherwood park/South Edmonton area. Please share and get your nominations in before tomorrow evening🎄

Merry Christmas!!! Thank you to the coaches, boarders, lessors and lesson people that came out to celebrate Christmas at our in barn fun show and potluck dinner. It was such a fun day and we are so lucky to have you all at Shadowlands. We hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas and can’t wait to see what next year brings!!!!
