Pork has long been one of the more underrated proteins available. There are many myths surrounding pork and some people still believe that pork should not be fed. The truth is pork is a highly digestible protein with a well balanced amino acid profile. It also contains essential minerals such as iron, selenium, magnesium, phosphorous, and zinc. Pork is high in B Vitamins, particularly Vitamin B1, Thiamin, a vitamin that helps in metabolism, i.e breaking food down into usable energy, and it also helps with keeping the nervous system healthy and functioning. It is something that is not widely used in the pet industry for food so can make a great selection for a novel protein if looking to start an elimination diet. It is also affordable and widely accessible compared to many of the other novel protein options available.
Let’s talk about some of the myths surrounding pork:
MYTH: It contains parasites.
FACT: This is true and was once a concern but pork coming from developed countries such as Canada that have good husbandry practices and come from inspected facilities these are unheard of.
MYTH: Pork is fatty.
FACT: Like with all other meats, certain cuts are fattier than others. Many of the fattier cuts of pork are what go to the human chain for products such as bacon. We use lean, trim pork loin in our recipes.
MYTH: Pork is a dirty meat because pigs don’t sweat and they are fed garbage.
FACT: Feeding pigs garbage and food waste is illegal in Canada. Pigs, like any other mammal, filter their body through their organs, not their sweat glands. It is as clean as any other meat.

It is a great protein to use if there are suspected allergies or sensitivities / intolerances in your pet. Come talk to us if you need help starting!

Kibble bowls, pockets, treat balls, and floors. There may not be much meat in there, but it’s often forgotten that kibble IS a meat product.

Wash your hands, wash the dishes, and if you really want to stay salmonella free - feed fresh food like you would to yourself 😉

If you're feeding kibble to your pets, be thankful you're not living in the US. When they're not using subpar grain (full of mycotoxins, studies show) and leftovers from the human veg industry (beet pulp, corn gluten, soybean hull), they're using horribly dangerous, condemned, waste meat from the agri sector (we call it 4D meat - dead, diseased, dying, disabled - which is sent for cremation over here). They can also use road kill and used, HIGHLY TOXIC restaurant grease.

Shame on the vet industry over there recommending that horrible filth over real food.

Another reminder… please DO NOT, under any circumstances feed your dog cooked bone.
Cooked bones do not digest, eventually causing impaction in the bowel because the bone will collect in the digestive tract if fed for prolonged periods. Yes, this is even the case for ground bone. Cooked whole bones can splinter and puncture intestines, the gut, esophagus, etc.

We never recommend cooking pre-made raw food. It contains ground bone as a source of calcium and other minerals. If your dog will not eat the food raw you can try warming it with some warm water, do it at room temperature, or, some dogs actually prefer it closer to frozen. Play around with it to see what your dog prefers. You can VERY LIGHTLY seer the outside to make it more appealing but it should be raw in the middle (think blue-rare steak). If you must cook food, home made using a calcium supplement is best.

We love adding table scraps to the dog’s bowl but some no-nos are; cooked/rendered fatty foods, cooked bones, anything with xylitol, grapes, raisins, and chocolates. (Not an extensive list).

Here’s a quick list of some safe consumable bones:
-Any raw chicken bones
-Any raw rabbit bones
-Any raw duck bones
-Any raw turkey bones

**Choose appropriate sized bones for your dog and their chewing style and always supervise when giving bones.**
