As many of our customers know, we are heading into Kennel Cough season, while this is generally harmless (still horrible to see our dogs sick), we do try to prevent the spread as much as possible…There has been reports of Kennel cough around the HRM area.
We do ask to please watch for these signs, keep your pup at home if they are showing symptoms, to help us prevent the spread.

Kennel cough, also known as infectious tracheobronchitis, is a contagious respiratory disease in dogs. It’s commonly spread in environments where dogs are in close contact, such as kennels, dog parks, or grooming facilities. Here’s what you should know and the signs to look for:

Signs of Kennel Cough:

1. Persistent, Dry Cough: The most noticeable symptom is a strong, persistent cough. It often sounds like a “honking” noise and can be mistaken for something stuck in the throat.
2. Gagging or Retching: The cough can sometimes be followed by gagging or retching, as if the dog is trying to clear its throat.
3. Sneezing: Some dogs may also sneeze frequently.
4. Runny Nose or Eyes: Mild nasal discharge or watery eyes can accompany the cough.
5. Lethargy: While some dogs may act normally, others might be more tired than usual.
6. Loss of Appetite: A decreased interest in food can be a sign, especially if the cough is severe.
7. Mild Fever: In some cases, dogs might develop a mild fever.

When to See a Vet:

• If the cough persists for more than a few days.
• If your dog shows signs of distress or difficulty breathing.
• If there’s a noticeable loss of appetite or energy.
• If the nasal discharge becomes thick or colored, indicating a possible secondary infection.

Prevention:

• Vaccination: There is a vaccine available that helps protect against some of the common causes of kennel cough. It’s especially recommended for dogs that are frequently around other dogs.
• Avoiding Exposure: Try to limit your dog’s exposure to environments where kennel cough is known to be circulating, especially if there’s an outbreak.

If you suspect your dog might have kennel cough, it’s best to keep them away from other dogs and consult your veterinarian for advice.

Thank you for being amazing customers and helping keep the spread down every year, we truly appreciate it, as well as the dogs 💕
