🚨 IMPORTANT NOTICE: CANINE LEPTOSPIROSIS ALERT 🚨
Attention ALL dog owners in HRM. We have had 2 cases of Canine Leptospirosis in hospital this week, and suspect there are more in the area.
Leptospirosis is a serious bacterial infection that poses a risk to both dogs and humans. "Lepto" thrives in warm, wet environments, particularly in late summer and fall seasons. The bacteria can survive for extended periods (weeks to months). Heavy rainfall can exacerbate its spread. Various mammals, notably rodents, raccoons, and even some livestock, can transmit Leptospirosis through their urine. The bacteria enters the body through ingestion, broken skin, or mucous membranes (eyes, nose, or mouth). The incubation period (the time between exposure and symptom onset) is about 7 days.
Leptospirosis spreads throughout the body. It primarily affects the liver and kidneys, which can have severe consequences, including life-threatening conditions.
Look out for these common signs, which may vary in severity:
Fever
Decreased appetite
Vomiting
Diarrhea
Increased thirst and urination
Lethargy or weakness
Stiffness and soreness
Dehydration
Yellowing of the eyes or gums
Small bleeding under the skin
Redness in the eyes
Rapid or difficulty breathing
If you notice any of these signs in your dog contact your veterinary hospital immediately to schedule an appointment.
While diagnosing Leptospirosis can be challenging, your veterinarian may recommend blood work, urine testing, PCR tests, antibody tests, x-rays, or any other necessary tests to confirm the infection.
Annual vaccination with the Leptospirosis vaccine is strongly advised for dogs. After the initial vaccine, a booster is required within 3-4 weeks. The vaccine is then given every 12 months. Prevention is far simpler than treatment. Your veterinarian can guide you on whether this vaccine is suitable for your dog's lifestyle.
Please limit your dog's access to standing water, address any rodent issues promptly, and avoid contact with wildlife.
Stay vigilant, prioritize your dog's health, and reach out to us or your veterinary clinic with any concerns or queries.

In response to the ongoing fire situation in Nova Scotia, a collaboration of behaviourial health experts are coming together to help the families, professionals, and extended friends help the pets affected by the fires and evacuations. These events are not easy for us humans, and trying to help our pets manage and cope in less than ideal situations.
Join Dr Juanita Ashton, Kathleen Dunbar, Cathie Bell, Alex Keir, and Barb Deg (and possibly a few other experts) for a free event at the SPCA College of Welfare at 7 pm on June 8 to learn what you can do immediately to help your pet, and learn where to look for resources in the coming months.
We know that there are many that are affected that cannot attend (particularly those affected by the fires in Shelburne and Barrington) so we are attempting to stream the event, and will be recording it to have available for anyone at a later date.
Please share far and wide and we are looking forward to seeing everyone on Thursday evening.
It's been pretty hard to find a smile during these trying times lately.
Hopefully, anyone who needs one can borrow Lucy's for a little while❤️🩹
