Over-exercising a young puppy, especially during the growth stages, can have detrimental effects on their developing body, particularly on their growth plates. Growth plates are areas of developing cartilage at the ends of the long bones in puppies that are responsible for bone growth. These plates are soft and vulnerable to damage, especially during periods of rapid growth.

When a puppy is over-exercised, the stress and impact on their still-developing bones and joints can cause the growth plates to become inflamed or even damaged. This can lead to abnormalities in bone growth, such as uneven growth or even premature closure of the growth plates. Premature closure can result in skeletal abnormalities, such as deformities or limb length discrepancies, which can lead to lifelong issues with mobility and pain.

It’s important to provide puppies with appropriate exercise that allows them to develop their muscles and coordination without putting excessive strain on their developing bones and joints. Gradual, moderate exercise that is appropriate for the puppy’s age, breed, and physical condition is key to ensuring healthy growth and development.
