Winter walks have arrived!
So, how do we ensure that our dogs are prepared?
First, know your dogs tolerance. How cold is too cold? Some dogs will need to be coated, wear a sweater etc while others were bred to tolerate some pretty cold temperatures. But even they can be a risk for frostbite and hypothermia if you don't pay attention
Here is a chart to help you understand the dangers of cold weather.
Now, this chart is just for guidance. This won't be the same for every breed or every dog but it is a good guidlines. Activity level matters. A dog that is moving will stay much warmer than a dog that is not.
City walks mean road salt. This is not only highly toxic if ingested, it can also cause havoc on paw pads. If you are choosing boots, correct sizing is very important. Choose a boot that will allow your dog to freely expand their toes when required. There are lots of natural options out there for paw pad protection that don't include boots. Many are made with Beeswax which will provide a protective layer when out walking. A simple warm water rinse can wash away any salt build up after a walk.
Now that winter is here, there is no need to avoid it, just make sure you and your dog are prepared for it!!
