What is a “Trailrunner?”

The Original Trailrunners… Not that many years ago in nearly every indigenous society, certain ones were chosen for their speed, stamina, andintegrity, to be a “runner” (with news, message) to another village or tribe, sometimes even a great distance away. The only roads were trails in those days, and so those guys were the original “Trailrunners” In honor of them,

we wanted to name our dogs "Trailrunners" Labradors, because a good working dog has those very qualities of speed and stamina, and also because we choose to work withintegrity as we breed and train dogs, and work with our clients. Working Line Labs…
A Trailrunners Lab will not want to go lay down after a half a day’s work. Many Labradors today are actually bred to promote the “couch potato” temperament, but not ours! There is only a very small percentage of pure “working line labs” being bred today. Every lab we breed here has “Trailrunners” as part of the registered name and they live up to their name. In fact we don’t breed a dog, no matter how great the sire and dam were, unless they have a working title. (with the exception of Gideon who we acquired later in his life, but he is too good a dog to pass up for breeding) We run them in hunt tests, and obtain titles such as Junior Hunt, to Master Hunt. We have been developing our breeding lines carefully so that we have as many high quality, proven and titled working dogs as possible in the background of every pup/dog.

“On Off Dogs”…
We also have worked to develop dogs that are calm with people, but high energy when they work. This is more than an ideal, it is an actual temperament trait that we have worked to build into every Trailrunners pup. We call these "on off dogs". In size Trailrunners labs are "medium”. Black, Yellow, Chocolate, Fox Red…
We breed all colors including Fox Red. In addition to being uniquely beautiful, our Fox Reds have great pedigrees and proven working abilities, exactly as we uphold for all of our dogs. We do not recommend or breed “silver” or “charcoal” Labs. Healthy beyond skin deep…
Health wise, all dogs are certified good or excellent in hips/elbows (OFA) and eyes are cleared (CERF). We feed 100% raw WHOLE diet (nature's way) for longevity and superb disease resistance. Moms produce healthier pups and pups are calmer when mom eats this food. We have tried many high end (cooked, dry)dog foods and none compare. Allergies disappear, teeth are clean, and "cleanup" is minimized. Dogs are virtually cancer proof. The pups as well… start their lives after being weaned on raw food. The pups are born and raised in our home and go to new homes already very accustomed to human interaction. They are paper trained, along with immunization/de-worming, CKC regd. and tattooed and more. Cancer Detecting Dogs…
Trailrunners is home to Canada’s first team of Cancer Detecting Labradors, We have 5 dogs that work daily in screening cancer patients (using samples that are sent in, the patients do not come in person) We are seeing the dogs do amazing work in this field. it certainly fits our mission statement, “Trailrunners will breed the best working Labrador Retrievers possible, whose purpose is to serve and benefit mankind”

Chris and Fran Oudshoorn are full time managers and trainers, and including our 2 teens we have 6 other staff to help with the duties of cleaning, feeding, ”scooping” and letting the dogs in and out of yards. Wow how did they even manage to film this? its like today there is a camera in every tree. If you or I was filming we would drop the camera to try grab the dog - I never would guess in advance the other dog could do that. Great action capture though! Kind of really amazing what dogs can do.

Try and guess how many pups and what colours they will be… Trailrunners Pepper is big and round - and so in a week or two we will see them. Last litter she had all three colours of the Labrador Retriever in her litter… Black Yellow, & Chocolate... and likely will again.

Summer 2024 was awesome, with many Trailrunners Labs receiving titles in CKC hunt tests across the western provinces. They are too numerous to list in one post, but here are some fabulous photos that show the passion of the dogs for this sport, taken by , near Irricana Alberta. Since many of us in the dog world are planning and booking for next summer's events, we thought it would be nice to remind ourselves what it's going to be like out there once all this snow and ice are gone! Good old Trailrunners Aslan, the gentle giant Akbash. We had to say goodbye to him last year, after he had many years of guarding all the "sheep' at night. He would have loved this weather, it was his favourite, the colder the better. He thrived his entire lifetime on a well-balanced raw diet (As all the Trailrunners dogs do), and was always healthy to the end. He outlived many large breed dogs' usual lifespans without any debilitating ailments. It did help that he was also from old Turkish stock of this amazing mountain working breed from Turkey. Wolves? He was bigger. Bears? They would run away. Any aggressive dog? Instantly on the ground in a submissive and still posture looking up asking "What happened"? Yet always loving and kind to those he knew and loved. We will miss you. Hopefully, Samson will fill your shoes well when he gets "big"!

Happy New Year From Trailrunners!
2024 was a very busy year for the Trailrunners team!. It couldn't have been more eventful or successful! In the spring, we held 4 separate weekend-long Gun dog demonstrations in front of big crowds in Calgary Edmonton Lethbridge, and Saskatoon at Outdoors/Sportsman shows, In Spring, Summer, and Fall we had 3 separate Gun dog weekends at Trailrunners, with many amazing dogs and their owners, There was also a Kevin Chef Retriever seminar at Trailrunners training grounds with many registrants and their dogs in attendance. There were many successful CKC hunt tests with Trailrunners dogs in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. Lots of travelling with the Trailruners dogs, as well as a number of client's dogs we trained and titled!. We had dogs titled in Junior hunt, Senior hunt, Master Hunt, WC, WCI, and WCX! 2025 is gearing up to be as busy of a year with the Sportsman shows bked, hunt tests being planned, and more 'gun dog' training dogs arriving this wek!

Trailrunners Kona from the Guage and Lola litter is 6 months old, and if she was not a beloved pet already she could be a star detection K9 !

Ziggy is showing us all how to run on the treadmill when you love staring at cats, and know Toodie the cat is over there.

Trailrunners Cedar is A registered medical facility therapy dog, a trained and great companion, and an outdoors fanatic with mom 24/7 if they could... Lives and works in Saskatoon... Just heard this... "No leash. Just hops right in when I say treadmill!"

Trailrunners Willow owned by Jason Silliker of canadianpremierhunts is now 7 1/2 years and in typical Trailrunners Labrador form, not even starting to slow down. “Last hunt of the season this afternoon and close to 4000 birds retrieved this fall Willow still has the speed. zero issue this fall with her, not showing any signs of soreness”

Some dogs while on their ‘In House’ portion of their training are excited about bones. They all get to pick whatever they want out if the toy box and they each pick different things according to their personality. Moose the German Short Hair Pointer goes home today after he trains with his owners for the afternoon. He does not know that yet so for now the bone is just fine!
