Kawartha Cat Sanctuary

Kawartha Cat Sanctuary Shelter advice for rescues. Glad to help with any Kitty issues. Rescued some from being Shot to death while OPP and Humane Society did nothing.

In the header pic....this is Prancer Preener the Momma of so many she left me in the forest...I finally caught her and had her spayed at LAWS. One of her litters she had 5 then after a night of coyote howls in the woods she only had 2... The kittens came close to my home...I noted one was limping....so I opened the door... time and time again. Building a winter run so they can all enjoy the outdoors protected ... and of course at night they all huddle in close to the warmth...

Feed Wet food/Real Meat. Home cooking the BEST. Or pay later at the Vet and the suffering of the poor Pet. Read the INGREDIENTS!
'Per the FDA: “Aflatoxins are produced by molds of the Aspergillus species. Aspergillus can grow on grains and seeds during growing season as well as after harvest during storage.”
Corn is THE most commonly used grain in pet foods. Based on a 2020 report from the Institute for Feed Education & Research…
…more than twice as much corn is used in cat and dog foods than any other ingredient." Its a GMO Glyphosate killer. Cancer.
Aflatoxin: the Cause of 100,000 Cases of Liver Cancer Per Year
Source: Truth About Pet Food
From a post at Food Safety Magazine: “…at the 2022 Institute for the Advancement of Food and Nutrition Sciences’ (IAFNS’) Annual Meeting and Science Symposium, Felicia Wu, Ph.D., discussed her recently published study about the rising prevalence of aflatoxin in U.S. corn…”
A concerning quote from the post regarding Dr. Wu’s presentation:
“Aflatoxin poses a public health risk due to its association with liver cancer, and aflatoxin is “the most potent, naturally occurring human carcinogen.” Approximately 100,000 cases of liver cancer are caused by aflatoxin per year…”
Dr. Wu’s statistic of “100,000 cases of liver cancer” per year caused by aflatoxin are human illnesses. If aflatoxins are the cause of 100,000 human liver cancers each year…how many pets are diagnosed with liver cancer each year caused by aflatoxins in pet food?
No Tracing.
Pet Food related illness are not tracked as they are in human food. While some veterinary clinics might document the pet food brand a newly cancer diagnosed dog or cat is/was consuming, (to our knowledge) there is no national database for veterinarians to track specific cancers potential link to pet food or pet food ingredients.
To further complicate tracing of pet food related cancers/illnesses in pets, some veterinary clinics pose a potential conflict of interest to collect data. Such as, a significant portion of veterinary clinics in the US (and globally) are owned by Mars Pet care – the largest manufacturer of pet food in the world. It’s unlikely a pet food owned veterinary clinic would link their brands of pet food to a pet illness.
Pet Feed Ingredient Quality.

Dr Jones comments---
Aflatoxins are one of the most common reasons for Pet Food Recalls
In my veterinary practice I often saw dogs poisoned with Aflatoxins from moldy food/compost- they would come in being wobbly, and uncontrolled muscle tremors.
Now Cancer
Yet ANOTHER reason to avoid commercial food, and in particular, Corn based food.
The entire what to feed your dog or cat is MOST confusing... now the worry about fungal toxins?

Here is something that I suggest and do regularly.
The microbes that populate your dog and cat's intestinal tract can have NOT only a dramatic impact on their health, but also behaviour.
You should be supplementing with a good quality Multi-strain probiotic!
Consider giving ONLY -Wet/Good quality food.
NO DRY KIBBLE.

RAW Cat Food -- Recalls Continue As Another Popular Brand
Tests Positive for Bird Flu. COOK ALL FOOD WELL.
Another Pet Food Recalled due to Bird Flu contamination.
The Today Show reports that dozens of cats have died.
What should you do?
Don't panic, avoid RAW milk and RAW poultry for now, but choose to feed your pets healthy.
Such as a quality canned food. Some pet food that you make at home (cooking will kill the virus).
And consider adding in nutrients to help support your cat's immune system to fight of pathogens in the first place.
A public health warning is an important message for people with cats. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has advised people not to purchase Monarch Raw Pet Food, often sold at farmer's markets across California, after a cat tested positive for bird flu from their products.
The news is a concerning development in the growing number of bird flu cases that have been spreading across the United States. According to the press release sent out by the organization, the H5N1 bird flu was detected in Monarch Raw Pet Food cat food recently, prompting the organization to share their warning.
"A house cat that consumed this product has been confirmed H5 bird flu positive," the press release states. "Four other house cats from the same household are presumed to have also been positive for H5 bird flu after consuming the product."
The organization also advised that any other animals that consumed Monarch raw pet food products "or other raw meat or dairy products" and is showing symptoms of H5N1 should contact their veterinarian "immediately," the press release states. A full listing of where Monarch Raw Pet Food is sold can be found on their website.
This is the second time a warning about raw pet food has been issued because of bird flu in the last two weeks. On December 26, the Oregon Department of Agriculture (ODA) warned consumers against Northwest Naturals brand 2 lb. Turkey Recipe raw & frozen pet food. The food also tested positive for H5N1 bird flu.
Both the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National Veterinary Services Laboratories (NVSL) and the Oregon Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (ODVL) at Oregon State University conducted the tests after a house cat in Washington County contracted the illness and died. "Tests confirmed a genetic match between the virus in the raw and frozen pet food and the infected cat," a press release from ODA states. The company voluntarily recalled their products after the bird flu was found.
The Today Show reports that dozens of cats have died since the bird flu outbreak started in March 2024. Cats seem to be more susceptible to die of bird flu than other animals. They seem to contract the illness from a variety of sources; either from unpasteurized dairy products, raw meat, exposure to infected birds, or exposure to people who work with infected birds. The illness can even be passed through the clothing that these poultry workers wear.
As for now, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has stated that the public health risk is low. There have been no known human-to-human cases of bird flu transmission. Although a few humans have contracted the illness through working with infected animals.

The ODA is now urging cat owners to avoid feeding their cats raw or undercooked meat products, avoid consuming raw dairy, limit any contact with sick animals, wash your hands after handling raw animal products or any contact with sick animals, report any dead or ill birds to your local government organizations, and keep any pets or poultry away from wild waterfowl.
According to TODAY, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has stressed that humans should also not consume raw milk or meat for these reasons.

The Hidden Risks of Over-Vaccination in Dogs and Cats
Vaccines for pets: should you or shouldn't you?
There are real risks, and you should be cautious.
As a former holistic veterinarian, I’ve seen firsthand how over-vaccination can lead to chronic health issues in our pets, from allergies and immune disorders in our dogs, to Kidney disease and Urinary Tract disease in our cats. While vaccines have an important role in protecting our furry family members from serious diseases, there’s growing evidence that less can sometimes be more. Here’s what every pet parent needs to know:
1. Too Many, Too Often
Did you know your dog could be getting 6–7 vaccines per year if they’re receiving “non-core” vaccines along with routine boosters? This practice not only stresses their immune system but also increases the risk of vaccine-related side effects.
2. Are All Vaccines Effective?
Not all vaccines provide strong or lasting protection. For example:
Lyme Disease Vaccine (dogs): Its effectiveness is questionable, especially in areas with low Lyme disease risk.
FIV/FeLV Vaccines (cats): Often given annually, yet the risk of side effects can outweigh the benefits in low-risk cats.
3. Long-Lasting Immunity Is Real
Studies show that many core vaccines last far longer than previously thought. For example:
The Canine Parvovirus Vaccine has been shown to protect dogs for up to 7 years – yet it’s often still administered every 3 years. It may even confer lifelong immunity in many dogs.
So, why overdo it when your pet’s immunity is already strong?
4. One Size Does NOT Fit All
Here’s something to think about:
A 150 lb. Great Dane and a 5 lb. Chihuahua receive the same vaccine dose.
Smaller dogs often experience more severe side effects – likely due to their size in proportion to the vaccine volume.
Isn’t it time we considered a more tailored approach?
5. Real Risks of Vaccine Side Effects
Vaccine reactions are rare but real. Some examples include:
Allergies and Immune Diseases in Dogs: Chronic skin issues and autoimmune diseases are sometimes linked to over-vaccination.
Injection-Site Sarcomas in Cats: A small percentage of cats develop cancer at vaccine injection sites.
What’s the Solution?
I recommend a minimal vaccination approach focused on these principles:
Administer only core vaccines (like rabies and parvovirus) when necessary.
Discuss titer testing with your vet to measure your pet’s immunity levels before giving boosters.
Your pet’s health isn’t about checking boxes – it’s about what’s best for them.

Beware the Asian Longhorned Tick: A Tiny Pest with Big Consequences for Your Dog/Cat

Controlling Ticks is challenging, but Healthier animals DO repel pests better. Nutrition is the foundation for health. Efforts to improve your pet’s nutrition and supplement with a vitamin, preferably a whole food supplement can help your pet repel these pests and greatly reduce your chances for re-infestation in the future.

Some supplements of particular value when fighting pests include probiotics and digestive enzymes to help your pet make the most of his meal, and they may make your pet “less tasty”.

A probiotic/digestive enzyme supplement can help with this, and IF you have yet to try it you should. They have been very beneficial for our dogs with recurring digestive tract disorders:

As pet parents, we're always looking out for our furry family members. But did you know there's a sneaky little hitchhiker out there that could pose serious risks to your dog? Meet the Asian longhorned tick (Haemaphysalis longicornis)—a small pest with a big reputation.

What’s the Buzz About This Tick?

The Asian longhorned tick isn’t just any ordinary tick. Originating from East and Central Asia, this tiny invader first showed up in the U.S. in 2017 and has since spread to 16 states in the Southwest and Northeast. And while its size may be small, the potential problems it brings are anything but!

Here’s why this tick should be on your radar:

Disease Super-Spreader: It can transmit several diseases, including anaplasmosis, babesiosis, ehrlichiosis, theileriosis, rickettsiosis, and even some viruses.

Heavy Infestations: A single tick might not seem threatening, but these ticks reproduce quickly and can cause severe infestations. In extreme cases, blood loss from so many ticks can even be fatal.

Furry Sentinels: Dogs are like magnets for ticks, especially since they spend so much time close to the ground. This makes them our first line of defense in identifying and managing this tick.

How to Protect Your Pup
The good news? You can take simple yet effective steps to shield your dog from the dangers of these ticks.

1. Arm Your Dog with Tick Protection
In areas where there is a large tick burden, you may need conventional tick repellents. In my experience I would have you consider Revolution if needed. The simple way is to daily check your dog for ticks. Consider the Tick Spray Recipe at the end of the newsletter.

2. Keep an Eye on Your Dog
Regularly check your dog’s fur, especially after outdoor adventures. Pay special attention to their ears, armpits, and belly—ticks love hiding in warm, protected spots.

3. Remove Ticks Safely
Spotted a tick? Don’t panic! Use fine-point tweezers to grasp it as close to the skin as possible, then gently pull back until it lets go. Dispose of the tick securely and sanitize the area.

4. Know Your Enemy
Think you’ve found an Asian longhorned tick? Seal it in a zip-top bag and take it to your veterinarian for identification. Early identification can make a big difference.

Dr Jones' NEW Turmeric Oil Natural Tick Repellent Spray

One recent study looked at 10 different essential oils, looking at the repellent properties of these oils.
One oil came out way on top: the paper's titled Preventing Tick Attachment to Dogs using Essential Oils

Turmeric root essential oil had the best tick repelling properties at a relatively very low concentration (2%).
3 ingredients
1. Base of the spray is Witch Hazel with aloe. It's a great skin oil and it forms a great base for any type of flee or tick spray. It can decrease inflammation that may be happening from a pest infestation.

2. Liquid coconut oil. Some of the fats within coconut oil such as lauric acid, have demonstrated pest repellent properties, and it also makes a great base binding the turmeric essential oil so they can evenly spread throughout the tick spray.

3. Turmeric essential oil - of all the essential oils studied it came on on top of having the best tick repellent properties.

Recipe

Witch Hazel with Aloe: 100ml (7 tablespoons)

Liquid Coconut oil: 30ml (2 tablespoons)

Turmeric Essential Oil: 2.5ml (50 drops)

This produces a 2% concentration of turmeric essential oil, making it safe for dogs
Shake well each time before spraying.
Use liquid coconut oil, and you still may need to warm this if your house is cold.
Lightly mist your dog/cat, then use a flea comb to spread it through the fur.

Can be applied 2-3 times/week for a dog, but best to only use once a week for cats.
