On this Remembrance Day, we remember the dogs that served Canadian forces in WWI. Dogs were employed as messengers between units, to lay down telephone lines from spools attached to their backs, sentry duty, detection of poison gas, and locating wounded soldiers in the battlefield while carrying medical backpacks. Stray dogs were also often adopted by soldiers in the trenches, providing comfort and companionship in difficult circumstances.
