What is the Linus Fund?

As many of you remember, Linus was a fixture here at Bowen Veterinary Services for many years. Linus could be found either greeting clients, comforting patients, or generally providing emotional support and comic relief to us all. Linus lost his battle to a tumor on his heart which is ironic because he had the biggest heart and was the perfect example of an inherently good dog. And although his earthly life was not long enough, his impact was profound and that is why we’ve started the Linus Fund.
The Linus Fund will provide support to patients and families in need of help with their medical bills. When faced with difficult diagnosis it is normal to feel scared and helpless and it is sometimes difficult to come up with all of the funds necessary to provide the care needed. We never want our clients to feel this way so we hope this will be a way to alleviate that fear. Please see our website on how to qualify.
Ways you can help:
✅ Donate – at the moment, we are only accepting cash donations. We are working on other payments methods, stayed tuned.
✅ Purchase a candle for $25 – these locally made candles are available for purchase or order and all of the profits go towards the Linus Fund.
Linus is missed everyday here at Bowen Veterinary Services but he is missed most of all by Bayley, Josh and the rest of his family. 🐾

It has been a challenging week here for many on Bowen Island. We would like to take the time to thank our team for showing up and tackling all that came their way with grace and determination.
We would also like to thank the Bowen Island Community for pulling together during this week’s unexpected weather event.
Thank you to all who were involved in the clean up of trees, plowing of roads and active in having power reinstated. All of those efforts allowed us to be here for your pets surgeries and routine appointments.

We talk a lot about brushing your pet’s teeth to reduce the risk of decay and disease – but how exactly should you do it?

Here are our top tips:
Use a toothbrush with a long, curved handle and gentle bristles or a finger brush to reach their back teeth.
Only use toothpaste meant for pets, which we sell! Human toothpaste can have toxic ingredients.
Allow them to taste the toothpaste with your finger before brushing.
Proceed to brush their teeth from the top, sides, and back

Leading our small but mighty team we have Dr Midge Ritchie MDVM. Visionary of the beautifully renovated clinic that we have welcomed all of our clients through the doors of over the last year or so since renovations completed in October 2022.
Dr Theresa Volkmann, celebrating her most recent achievement of full Canadian Veterinary licensing. Dr Theresa loves taking care of Bowen’s pets and greatly enjoys the community of a small town vet clinic.
Dr Sandra Madden, a local of the Howe Sound and Lower Mainland who is known to many on island already as delivering personalized veterinary home services.

You may have noticed an absence at Bowen Vet this past month, and that’s because our sweet clinic dog, Linus, was peacefully laid to rest on Boxing Day. Linus could be found most days at the clinic either greeting clients, comforting patients, or generally providing emotional and comical relief to us all. He will be tremendously missed by the staff here, and most of all by Bayley, Josh, and the rest of his family. Linus was the perfect example of an inherently good dog, despite a very rough past. And although his earthly life was not long enough, his impact was profound and will last years to come.

Winter is a popular time to make a home’s aesthetic extra cozy with aromatherapy using essential oils. Please be mindful that essential oils, ingested or inhaled, can be harmful to your pet, especially if they have pre-existing liver issues.

Signs of essential poisoning include:
-Difficulty breathing
-Uncoordinated gait
-Drooling
-Lethargy
-Weakness
-Muscle tremors
-Mouth or facial pawing
-Lip, gum, tongue, or skin redness or burns
-Vomiting

If your pet is exhibiting any symptoms, contact the Pet Poison Helpline (855-764-7661) and your vet immediately.
