This month is dedicated to spreading awareness about this lifelong condition of diabetes, affecting many dogs and cats world wide. Diabetes is a condition that keeps pets from producing or utilizing insulin, which prevents the conversion of food to energy. This makes sugar remain in the blood which results in lethargy and other health-related complications. Diabetes has no cure, but it can be controlled via medication and lifestyle practices.

As the names imply, this month-long holiday is dedicated to helping and promoting senior pets in finding a loving and permanent home. The holiday was founded by the ASPCA (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty To Animals) and petfinder.com as a means to raise awareness about senior animals and remind people that senior pets are actually excellent candidates for adoption.
