8/10/2024 Lunging at handler, barking/baring teeth
8/10/2024 Dog was outside on approach, wary of handler, alarm barked, would not come inside; handler closed dog out. On approach to the back gate dog retreated, growled as handler stepped in slowly and presented the leash. Ignored tossed treats, snarled and snapped at the leash; handler was able to lasso after several attempts. Dog exited kennel with coaxing, walked on leash, ignored other dogs. In m&g room handler dropped leash, dog moved to the other side of the room, avoidant, stared at handler. Became very stiff whenever handler tried to approach. Panting, wide-eyed, very easily startled. Handler stepped on and retrieved the leash, walked back to the kennel, entered easily; clip leash used. Handler did not attempt to pet or touch, dog displayed high levels of FAS.
8/7/2024 Staff was cleaning building when handler arrived; dog did not want to go to outside portion of kennel. Dog was lying on floor with head under kuranda bed; lifted head to look at handler with wide eyes and ears back but would not approach, even with treats. Handler opened gate, knelt and spoke softly to dog, then was able to slowly place leash. Dog exited kennel with gentle leash pressure; walked dog around outside of building to play yard. Dog shied away from other dogs barking and started to pancake, but handler was able to maintain forward momentum with gentle leash pressure. Once in yard, handler dropped leash and dog explored, sniffing, but would not come near hander even with coaxing. Handler approached dog and stepped on leash and reached to pet dog; dog shied away and would not allow handler to touch her. Handler used end of leash to stroke dog's back and dog immediately stiffened. Dog's tail was tucked during the entire time in yard. Handler walked dog back to building; dog walked with loose leash but again showed nervous behavior when passing by other barking dogs. Handler brought dog to outside portion of kennel; dog resisted entering. Handler entered kennel and used gentle leash pressure to guide dog in; dog entered kennel and handler used slip lead to remove leash.
8/3/2024 Wide eyed, stiff body, ears back tail tucked tight, side eyeing staff, walked slow into intake room. Allowed handling and vaccines with staff moving slow and walked slow to kennel

08/13/24 16:52 Canine is showing high levels of anxiety and stress in the shelter environment, with defensive behaviors around leashing and handling. Needs placement with a New Hope Partner who can evaluate behavior outside the shelter environment and provide any needed behavioral support by close of business 8/18/24 or sooner. May be at risk for euthanasia 8/19/24 or sooner if warranted.
