Smooth As A Cat Laid to Rest

AUBREY, TX – Kyle Manion, Manion Ranch reports his beloved stallion Smooth As A Cat was laid to rest February
1, 2024. This 2005 NCHA Horse of the Year, as with any older horse, had begun to show his age, especially two
weeks before his passing. A few months ago, he was brought back to the ranch to spend some time at home with
his family where he enjoyed being turned out, loved on, and fed treats.
During his career, Smooth As A Cat never missed a show due to injury. In his entire life, he never experienced any
unsoundness-related discomfort. Consequently, when Smooth As A Cat began exhibiting the signs of malady, the
family adhered to the stance they had taken long ago – Smooth As A Cat would not have a prolonged,
uncomfortable decline. Kyle commented, “Out of our profound love and appreciation for him, we made the
heartbreaking decision.”
Before Smooth As A Cat was moved to Weatherford to fulfill his breeding duties, he stood at Manion Ranch where
he happily interacted with the family throughout the day. So, when Smooth As A Cat returned home, it was a joyful
reunion for all. Kyle said, “We take pride and comfort in knowing he lived a wonderful life, was deeply loved by not
only our family, but also a legion of fans and supporters.”
After saying goodbye to their once-in-a lifetime horse, the Manion family looks forward to watching Smooth As A
Cat’s babies, and enjoying the gratification that comes from seeing their progress. Stamped with his athleticism,
charismatic personality, and competitive spirit... they’re easy to spot.
Since Smooth As A Cat has a large amount of frozen semen banked, and to honor him by continuing to build his
legacy, the 2024 breeding season (and each season thereafter) will be in full swing. His first breeding is $2,500 with
the second breeding offered at half price.

The Horse Manure Problem of 1894
The 15 to 30 pounds of manure produced daily by each beast multiplied by the 150,000+ horses in New York city resulted in more than three million pounds of horse manure per day that somehow needed to be disposed of. That’s not to mention the daily 40,000 gallons of horse urine.
In other words, cities reeked. As Morris says, the “stench was omnipresent.” Here are some fun bits from his article:
Urban streets were minefields that needed to be navigated with the greatest care. “Crossing sweepers” stood on street corners; for a fee they would clear a path through the mire for pedestrians. Wet weather turned the streets into swamps and rivers of muck, but dry weather brought little improvement; the manure turned to dust, which was then whipped up by the wind, choking pedestrians and coating buildings. . . even when it had been removed from the streets the manure piled up faster than it could be disposed of . . . early in the century farmers were happy to pay good money for the manure, by the end of the 1800s stable owners had to pay to have it carted off. As a result of this glut . . . vacant lots in cities across America became piled high with manure; in New York these sometimes rose to forty and even sixty feet.
We need to remind ourselves that horse manure is an ideal breeding ground for flies, which spread disease. Morris reports that deadly outbreaks of typhoid and “infant diarrheal diseases can be traced to spikes in the fly population.”
Comparing fatalities associated with horse-related accidents in 1916 Chicago versus automobile accidents in 1997, he concludes that people were killed nearly seven times more often back in the good old days. The reasons for this are straightforward: . . horse-drawn vehicles have an engine with a mind of its own. The skittishness of horses added a dangerous level of unpredictability to nineteenth-century transportation. This was particularly true in a bustling urban environment, full of surprises that could shock and spook the animals. Horses often stampeded, but a more common danger came from horses kicking, biting, or trampling bystanders. Children were particularly at risk.
Falls, injuries, and maltreatment also took a toll on the horses themselves. Data cited by Morris indicates that, in 1880, more than 3 dozen dead horses were cleared from New York streets each day (nearly 15,000 a year).

LNTS STREKE n DIABLO (APHA registered) also known as Apollo. He is a 3 yr old Heterozygous Tobiano Stallion. 5 panel negative through parentage. Is in the process of 6 panel and DNA tested.

Apollo stands 14.3 hands. He is very halter broke, good with his feet, loads, leads and easy to catch. He is not saddle broke but is now in training to be broke. Price will go up with training. He will be Gelded in early November.

He has bred our Mares and we currently have a 2023 from him. A Bay Filly (on site for viewing). 3 of our Mares are in foal from him for 2024 He is amazing with the Mares. Very easy to handle around them. Not aggressive at all. A complete gentleman.

Only selling because we have a different Stallion that we are focusing on for our program. I'm not in a rush to sell him.

I'm so happy with this Filly. You know you did your ground work right when she don't buck, rear or bolt when you first put the saddle on her. Now to start with saddle ground work 🧡
