Mittens loves to jump and pull to get to whatever she finds exciting, so we are working on her impulse control with obedience and the right collar. πΎ

Harley loves to bark at new people or things, so we are working on getting her to quietly observe new people by redirecting her barking barking behavior and rewarding her for complying. The goal being not to completely eliminate barking (as this is also a breed trait), but to have her stop when we ask her to. She's getting the idea of it towards the end of the session - good job Harley! β€οΈ

Harley leveling up on her leave it skills! Walk by leave its are a great thing to practice in your home, to mimic when you're outside on your walk and your dog passes by something you don't want them to pick up.

Harley learning door manners. She made great progress in 1 session! πΎ
When teaching door manners, always have dogs on leash to prevent them from bolting out the door. Take baby steps with just having them learn sit and wait, then see if you can reach for the door knob before progressing right to opening the door. By breaking it down into smaller steps, and rewarding each step along the way, it makes it easier for your dog to catch on.

Bogey making great progress with his attention to name, leave it and recall! He was able to settle down a lot quicker and focus back on me versus continuing to bark at the distraction.

Bogey re-learning his recall using a hand target and the word "HERE". He started off inside with no distractions and is now starting to practice outside with minimal distractions. Bogey loves to sniff around, so I still need to keep him on leash to guarantee compliance. I use his name followed by leave it if he becomes distracted. If needed, I remind him to leave it again followed by a leash tug to get his focus back on me, then I recall him to me. It's important he remains on leash until he is consistently recalling to me or he learns the command is optional. It's also important to not just keep repeating "HERE!" or the recall word loses its value.

Arbor keeping great attention to name with my dog as a distraction. We start off in the yard with just one dog distraction, then we build up to town walks with multiple distractions as he progresses. We use his name paired with the leave it command to break his fixation and get his focus back on me then reward the good behavior. Good job Arbor! π

Millie - where we started vs where we are now
#puppytraining101 #puppytraining #dogtraining #obediencetraining #grouppuppyclasses #puppytutoring
Arbor re-learning his recall with a hand target. The hand target is a visual cue in addition to the verbal command to signal a dog to recall back to you. When dogs have broken recalls (not coming or selectively coming when called), then switching the word along with pairing it with a visual cue (hand target) can help them successfully relearn their recall.
Arbor started off just doing the hand target in a low distraction setting inside, then we worked up to practicing outside in the backyard with more distractions. At the end we put it all together and paired the hand target along with the verbal recall word (come).

Meet Arbor πΆπ
He's a 1 year old Bernese Mountain Dog who lives in the countryside with his family and enjoys being outside. His family want him to have a stronger recall and walk nicely on leash.
This video is a progression of his leave it. Which is not only a very useful command, but it also pairs really well with recall and loose leash walking for when he becomes distracted, he can be reminded to "leave it" and refocus back onto me.

Meet Hank πΆπ
He's a 9 week old Saint Bernard puppy who loves naps and going to work with his mom. This is his first puppy tutoring session learning sit, down, leave it and hand target (for recall).
I start off by luring with treats to get him learning the action first, then when there is consistency with that, I will add in the verbal cue and slowly fade out thr treats.
