The nice weather has arrived! We already see so many pets and their owners out on the water enjoying the summer. We want to make sure we are thinking about our furry friends while out on the water too.
🚤 Boating Safety:
Life jackets are a must! Starting with short and frequent trips out on the boat would be good way to help your pet get used to the water and helps keep stress to a minimum. It is important to remember hydration, bring water and a bowl on for your pet. Keep fishing gear out of reach from your pets. Remember bathroom breaks on shore too!
🛟 Water Safety:
Life jackets are important for when our pets get tired and they are out in the water. Remember when our pets are having fun in the water, they don’t always remember to take breaks and fatigue is a concern. Always be on the look out for rip tides, waves, and strong currents before and during your pets swimming adventure. Before letting your pet swim make sure you’re looking for anything concerning like blue-green algae, any chemical spills etc.
What is Blue Green Algae?
Blue-green algae, also known as cyanobacteria, are microscopic, plant-like organisms that occur naturally in Lakes, Ponds, Rivers, and Streams. Some varieties of blue-green algae can produce cyanotoxins, which are harmful to humans and animals.
Populations of blue-green algae can rapidly increase to form a large mass or scum, called a bloom. Blooms are most common in late summer or early fall but can also occur in other seasons. Blooms do not always reoccur in the same water bodies.
Where does Blue Green Algae thrive?
In areas where the water is shallow, slow-moving and warm
may also be present in deeper, cooler water are not normally visible in water
What are the signs your dog may have blue-green algae toxicity:
- Shortness of breath
- Seizures
- Diarrhea/Vomiting
- Weakness
- Jaundice
- Drooling

As your trusted veterinary team, we’re here to remind you about the importance of socializing your furry family members! Did you know that proper socialization can significantly contribute to your dog’s overall well-being and happiness? No matter what the size or breed, socialization is a critical part of the growth of your dog. When a dog doesn’t have the opportunity to be socialized at a young age, they can develop anxiety, fear and reactivity. Unfortunately, this most often results in a dog bite situation.
Here are some expert tips from our team on socializing your canine companions:
1. Start Early: Begin socialization during the critical period (typically between 8-12 weeks) to help your puppy build positive associations with new experiences. You can do this within your home with people and vaccinated pets that you know, to reduce the risk of environmental exposure.
2. Positive Reinforcement: Use treats, praise, and rewards to reinforce good behavior during socialization encounters, helping your dog feel confident and secure.
3. Variety is Key: Expose your dog to a variety of stimuli, including different people, animals, environments, and situations, to help them adapt to diverse experiences.
4. Safety First: Ensure all socialization experiences are safe and supervised, prioritizing your dog’s well-being at all times.
5. Consistency is Key: Socialization is an ongoing process that requires patience and consistency. Make socialization a regular part of your dog’s routine to help them thrive.
Remember, our veterinary team is here to support you every step of the way on your pet parenting journey! If you have any questions or concerns about socialization or your pet’s behavior, don’t hesitate to reach out. Together, we can help your furry friend live their best life!
