Are you planning to travel to the U.S. with your dog? π€
If so, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has implemented updated import requirements that you need to know. Assuming your dog has only been in rabies-free or low-risk countries (such as Canada) for the last 6 months, you must:
β Complete the CDC Dog Import Form. A receipt will be e-mailed to you that is valid for 6 months of travel as long as your dog does not visit a high-risk country during this time. There is no charge for this and each dog requires their own form.
In addition to having a receipt for a CDC Dog Import Form, your dog must:
β Appear healthy upon arrival to the U.S.
β Be at least 6 months of age
β Have a microchip that is detectable with a universal scanner
Please note, a rabies vaccine is no longer required for dogs that are entering the U.S. from a rabies-free or low-risk country. However, a rabies vaccine is required for dogs to enter into Canada, so your dog must be up-to-date in order to re-enter the country.
If you have questions or need more information, please contact CDC-INFO at (800) 232-4636.
Meet Gretzky π€
Gretzky is a 4 year old chihuahua mix that was recently in to see us for a dental cleaning. Since he is a young, healthy dog, Gretzky had a prophylactic cleaning to prevent future periodontal disease.
During his routine dental cleaning, the doctor performed a thorough examination of Gretzky's mouth to check for any broken, chipped or fractured teeth. He also had dental x-rays taken to confirm that the tooth roots and surrounding bone were all in good shape. Next, the doctor scaled and polished each tooth to remove all plaque and tartar build up both above and below the gumline. It is especially important to remove plaque and tartar from below the gumline to stop bacteria from spreading into the tooth socket and destroying the bone.
Gretzky recovered well from his dental cleaning and his family has been keeping up with brushing his teeth daily to help maintain his new bright white smile! ππΆ

Please check out the following article from our friends at Trupanion that highlights Eight Essential Summer Safety Tips for our pets!

Keeping our kitties properly hydrated is very important, especially as they enter into their later years. However, this can be more of a challenge than one would expect. To help encourage your cat to drink, we recommend cleaning their water bowls daily and keeping multiple bowls around the house for easy access. A drinking fountain is also a great addition to any household with a cat as they love drinking running water. π¦ππββ¬
Of course, if your cat appears to be dehydrated or is hesitant to drink, please give us a call at 905-846-3316 right away. Dehydration in cats can lead to several serious medical concerns that should be addressed as soon as possible.
Here at Snelgrove Vet, we recommend spaying or neutering your pet between the age of 6 months to one year.
Having your pet spayed or neutered has many health benefits, such as:
βοΈ Eliminating risk of uterine cancer and pyometra, and reducing risk of mammary tumours in females
βοΈ Eliminating risk of testicular cancer and reducing risk of prostate issues and pancreatic cancer in males
βοΈ Eliminating risk of unplanned litters, thus reducing overall pet population
βοΈ Eliminating the drive to protect territory and spraying urine in male cats
βοΈ Reducing risk of humping/mounting behaviour in males
βοΈ Reducing risk of "wandering" behaviour in males looking for mates, thus reducing risk of being injured on the road or getting into a fight with another cat/dog
BONUS: On average, pets that have been spayed or neutered live longer π±π₯°πΆ
If you would like to schedule your pet for their spay or neuter, or if you have any questions regarding the procedure, please give us a call at 905-846-3316 ππ
You will also notice that all tabby cats have the defining "M" on their foreheads!
Thank you to all the heroes and their people who took the time to come out and donate for others at our blood donor clinic. Each of your donations can help save the life of up to 3 other dogs. We truly appreciate you!
As much as we enjoy the warm summer months, it is important to keep our pets safe and cool on exceptionally hot days πΎπ
This infographic provides the key signs of heat stroke and what to do if you pet is overheating:
Laser Therapy benefits your pet on a cellular level. When applied to an area of discomfort, the laser energy passes to the cells within your pet's body, causing them to reproduce faster. This process helps to break up scar tissue, reduce inflammation and increase circulation.
Laser Therapy is a completely non-invasive and pain-free way to help your pet heal faster, feel better and reduce their chances of re-injury.
If you are interested in Laser Therapy, please give us a call at 905-846-3316 to set up your initial consultation with one of our doctors.
Have a wonderful weekend! πΎ
Arthritis is very common in dogs and cats, and can be a painful and progressive disease. As our pets age, we need to take into consideration that they can suffer from stiffness and discomfort as a result of this.
Luckily, there are things we can do to help our pets feel better. We can make their lives easier at home by raising bowls higher off the ground or adding carpets to slippery floors. There are also supplements and medications that can aid in joint function and relieve pain. Laser therapy, weight management and exercise modification are very helpful tools as well.
If you feel your pet may be suffering from arthritis pain, please give us a call at 905-846-3316 to schedule an appointment with one of our doctors ππ₯°π

This is so interesting!
It has been theorized that a dog's ability to taste water is not only a survival technique in order to avoid harmful substances, but also helps to keep their internal fluids balanced. Since a dog's diet consists of a lot of meat (which is high in sodium), it is important that they stay hydrated as salt can cause excessive urination and salty food requires more water in order to be properly digested. It appears that after a salty meal, these specialized tastebuds are especially active, causing the water to be extra tasty, thus encouraging more drinking.

Look who came to visit us! This little guy hitched a ride on one of our patients. You can see in the video how quickly he is moving around. Ticks tend to prefer the cooler weather of spring and fall. Due to the increase in ticks in Peel Region and our warmer winters, we recommend tick protection year round.
