Phillips Family Organic Farm

Fresh. Organic. Vegetables. The rat race. Most of us run it every day. Long commutes, long hours, traffic jams... you know what I'm talking about.

I've been running this race for about 15 years, anxious to drop out while I'm young enough and healthy enough to enjoy it. Enter: opportunity. In December 2011 my wife and I had a baby girl. My wife took parental leave, and I decided to do the same. Some might say it wasn't a good career move, but I wasn't about to pass up an opportunity to spend six months with my daughter, wife and six-year-old

son. Plus, I figured it would be a great chance to enjoy a few hobbies and maybe try a totally different lifestyle. I was able to get access to an acre of land to farm for the entire time I'll be off work. So instead of crawling along the 401 to my job as an engineer and constantly checking my BlackBerry day and night, I now head to the farm each day in overalls and with my handy trowel. It's a different race at a slower pace. Actually, it's not a race at all. :)

Snap peas are the crop that almost wasn’t this year (until Hugh Phillips] saved the day!).

A spring crop, peas generally prefer cooler weather, but after that heat wave we had the other Saturday, the snow peas and snap peas were almost totally wiped out in the fields!

There were hopes from farmers about another planting but it was too soon to say for sure.

THEN we get the best surprise ever with a delivery of juicy snap peas from Hugh at Hugh Phillips]!

aka sugar snap peas, these are a great choice for stir fry, sautéed simply with lemon and mint, or add them to your salads d’or some extra crunch.

Because you don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone (and then magically reappears!).
