Give your dog their best life! Trained dogs can go to more places and do more things. By increasing the number of experiences your dog can have, you can give them a bigger, better life.

Train your dog to do a default behaviour that makes them feel safe and secure anywhere. Middle is a good behaviour because your dog can use your body to block anything in the environment.

Here is how to train Middle:

- have a treat in each hand to lure your dog to follow their nose
- with one hand lure them around one leg
- with your other hand lure them middle between your legs
- raise the treat up toward your middle to lure a sit
- mark "yes!" and give your dog a treat
- add a cue of your choice
- repeat

Fade your lure over time by removing the treat from your hand and slowly moving your hands away from your dog's nose.

Be your puppy's favourite! Train your puppy that you are more reinforcing than anything in the environment.

How? Train and play with your puppy to create an unbreakable bond. Use the behaviours you have trained your puppy how to do to keep them focused on you.

Some puppies and dogs place too much value on the environment and interactions with people and other dogs. Some puppies and dogs are fearful of triggers in the environment including people and other dogs. By becoming the most reinforcing thing in any environment, your puppy or dog will always choose you.

Every behaviour is a trick! When you think of dog tricks, loose leash walking or lying calmly on a mat do not come to mind. Every behaviour we want our dogs to do has to be trained and we can make everything we train our dogs to do fun!

Here is a fun trick to train your dog to do:

Magnet Mat
- grab a handful of your dog's food and a mat
- put the mat right in front of your feet on the floor
- get your dog's attention by clapping your hands and making funny noises
- when they come over to you and their paws touch the mat, mark "yes!" and toss a piece of food away
- clap some more and make more funny noises
- as soon as your dog reaches you and touches the mat, mark "yes!" and toss a piece of food away
- now be quiet and watch as your becomes magnetized to the mat choosing to go there all on their own
- when they choose to touch the mat, mark "yes!" and toss a piece of food away

Advanced Practise: when your dog is going to their mat reliably close to 10 out of 10
- add a cue of your choice such as "Abracadabra!" as they are going toward the mat
- slowly start backing away from the mat one step at a time over the course of a week
- randomly cue your dog to go to their mat throughout the day
- use mat practice when you need to keep your dog in one place like when you are having supper

Dog training is problem-solving! When your dog starts having behavioural issues, what are the first questions that you ask?

Here is my list:
- Have they been to the vet recently? Could something be medically wrong?
- Are all their basic needs met? Water? Diet? Rest? Enrichment? Exercise? Breed-specific needs?
- What is motivating the behaviour? What is the function?
- What can I change in the environment to prevent and/or manage the behaviour?
- Are they overstimulated? How can I help calm them down? How can I make them feel better?
- What do I want them to do instead? What is an alternative behaviour I can train them to do?

It is important that we build up our dog's confidence and allow them to do natural behaviours like sniffing to decompress. Train your dog how to be calm and neutral in most environments. Use setups that mimic real life to get them ready. You got this!

WTF - What's the Function?

All dogs develop unwanted behaviours at different times in their lives. Unwanted behaviours serve certain functions or needs. For example, some dogs fulfill instinctual herding needs by chasing and nipping towards people.

When you are replacing an unwanted behaviour your dog does with an alternative behaviour, make sure the function or need is still being met. Ask yourself, "What alternate behaviour could serve that function and fulfill that need?" Playing with a Flirt Pole is a great game that also serves to fulfil herding dogs' instinctual need to chase and nip.

You will need a Flirt Pole or a Lunge Whip (for horses) with a fuzzy cloth-type toy tied to the end of the rope.

Here is how to train your dog to use a Flirt Pole:
- Hold out the pole and cue your dog “Wanna play?”
- Drop the toy on the ground in front of your dog
- Quickly drag the toy so that your dog has the impulse to chase
- After they have run around for a while, let your dog grab the toy
- Play tug with the toy
- Cue them to release the toy “Drop”
- Repeat and have fun!

The closer you keep the toy to your dog’s mouth, the more enticing the game is. Find a good balance between chasing and grabbing hold / tugging to keep your dog engaged. Gradually build up your dog’s tolerance of frustration by increasing the time they chase. Keep it random and exciting!

You can also use Flirt Poles to build focus around distractions and as a reinforcing toy!

Don't forget to practice on walks! Our dogs need help generalizing behaviours so they can do them anywhere. After your dog is able to do a behaviour well at home, start practicing on walks.

Here's a training tip: create external reminders to practice by using if-then rules. For example, "If we go by a fire hydrant, then Fido will practice 3 sits."

I always carry a mix of low to high value food / treats in my pouch. My low value is dry kibble or cheerios, my mid value is dry / crunchy treats like freeze-dried beef lung, and my high value soft / small treats like like cut up Rollover.

Want your dog to come to you when you call? Train a good recall!

Try this:

- toss a piece of food / a treat away from you and say your seeking cue, for example "find it!"
- when they look up towards you, say your recall cue, for example "huddle!"
- when they get close to you, mark "Yes!" and give them food / a treat
- repeat 5 to 10 times

Attention is a foundational behaviour for training your dog. When you have your dog's attention then you can train them.

Here is how to train your dog to give you their attention:
- put your dog on their leash
- wait for them to voluntarily look your way
- mark "good", hold out a piece of food or a toy, and take a few steps backward
- give them the food or play with their toy
- repeat 5 to 10 times
- give the behaviour a cue like "look"

Practise getting your dogs attention everywhere you go together. This is important for dogs who are easily distracted by animals, sounds, or smells. Get ready for bigger challenges by practising at home or in your yard where is it easier for your dog to pay attention to you.

"Good" and "bad" or are moral judgements that are not helpful in dog training. Dogs have no sense of right and wrong, they only know what works vs doesn't work and what feels safe vs unsafe.

Dog training is a skill that develops over time. It is unfair to your dog and yourself to say that they are "bad". A better way to think about dog training is that your dog is learning and their skills are underdeveloped. It's a reminder to yourself that your dog's current skill level is not a permanent state of being. As your dog continues to develop their skills, they will become "good" at doing the behaviours you want them to do. This is a process that goes on throughout your dog's whole life.
