I tried to find a single picture to add to this post to encompass our weekend at the Manitoba Pony Club regional championship. I failed at finding a single photo. Instead I found a photo album full of friendship, accomplishments, defeats, encouragement, and teamwork. I added a video of Kash and Em using their teamwork skills to empty the hay bag.

It may have been a pony club event but our barn rats shined through. We truly have such amazing kids. Every single time I talk about these kids my eyes tear up. I honestly cannot put into words how great they are.

Thank you to the parents for allowing us to teach and learn from your children. Every day spent with them teaches us a new word 😬, but most importantly it teaches us to be humble. Forgive when a mistake is made, learn from our experiences and grow from them.

No matter our age or experience, may we always leave space to learn and grow.

Summer camps have finished and what a great summer it was. Campers, horses and so much fun! Big thank you to all our Barn Rats who provided great leadership and helped the campers to enjoy everything horsey.
A big high five to everyone who helped make the summer amazing!

So… Brandi has twisted Marilyn’s arm and we have a new pony on the property.

Everyone meet Marble!
She is a 6 year old, 9HH pony!

As you can see.. she is smaller than the bale feeder. If the grass gets any longer, we may lose her.

A huge thank you to our Barn rat Ava!
She had a brilliant idea today. She said we havent done a skills day in a while.. and why not see if any other kids want to join in on the fun!

Welcome to the Barn Rats
Our Barn Readiness Apprentice Team.

How does one describe our barn rats?!?
Have to be weird.. slightly weird.. ok VERY weird.
They have to LOVE horses.
They must enjoy working as a team.
They must be willing to learn patience if they do not already have that skill.
Must be willing to work. This experience involves a fair amount of labour.
Must be willing to learn! Horse things, barn things, life things. We are forever learning and growing.

If this sounds like something that your child might be interested in, please join us for our next Skills day!

I might be getting ahead of myself for who to contact for program registrations.

Let me reintroduce us!

We have been together as a team for 10+ years and have developed a strong friendship and positive working atmosphere. We all enjoy laughing and you will often hear one of us cracking a joke.

To the left is Megan. She is our Coach and does all the teaching things. You will often find her in one of our arenas. She is Marilyns left hand.. maybe because she is left handed?!? 😅 She loves dinosaurs and is an archaeologist! She owns two horses, Rocky and Phoenix.

In the middle is our Matriarch Marilyn. She’s the owner of this amazing facility and the brains behind the business. You will often see her buzzing around the stable keeping things in order. Asking a woman how many horses she has is like asking her weight… But we can say it is over 30 😁

To the right is Brandi. You wont see her at the barn as much as the other two. She is often behind the scenes looking after social media, invoicing and program planning. She lives on site so she is always on horse duty! She also has two horses, Vader and Sugar.

Google maps is not our friend!!

It quite often takes you down a road that actually isn’t a road. It is more of a turkey trail.
Also… it seems as though the sign on the corner of Patricia and baker road has been taken down?!?
So be sure to watch for the Air BNB sign. That’s where you turn right.

If you ever get lost be sure to message or call us.

As promised, more on Rollie.

Rollie’s previous eye surgery left him without a third eyelid on his right eye. Typically this is not something that would be too bothersome, but in this case it could be what is causing his problem.

The eyes of a horse are protected not only by the same types of eyelids that people have, but also by the nictitating membrane, which is sometimes called the third eyelid. This additional eyelid is a whitish pink color, and it is found under the other eyelids in the inside corner of the eye (near the nose).

Because Rollie is lacking this special eye lid, it renders him unable to keep dust, dirt and pests out of his eye. One of the potential problems could be that Rollie has gotten a bug in his eye which has burrowed and caused swelling and a mass.
This is called a Habronema. It is treatable with multi scheduled deworming sessions. If successful the mass and swelling will disappear.

The second cause could be that he has cancer. Some types of cancers are invasive but escape tests leaving a negative result. Due to the location of the swelling and mass, cancer would be fatal.

Due to the timing of the mass, the location and lack of a third eye lid, we are leaning (& hoping) towards the Habronema diagnosis.

We will know more in the coming weeks as he completes his deworming sessions. 🤞🤞

Today Rollie went on an adventure.

Rollie came to us back in December with knowledge that he had a surgery on his eye due to a lump. They removed the lump and it was deemed non-cancerous.

Fast forward to a couple of months ago. We noticed another lump on the same eye. It was examined and thought to be some scar tissue or a bug bite. It was not growing in size and was not hot or causing pain. A couple of weeks ago there was noticeable swelling. This time we had a sample of the fluid around the lump sent away. Once again came back as not cancerous.

Late last week while we were doing coggins, we had Rollie’s eye checked again as now it has an open wound on it. Our vet made the referral to have Rollie seen at Elders Clinic with Dr Bell.

We are still unsure exactly what is causing all of the swelling but we have two options. One is a good prognosis, the other not so great. I will post a bit more about these tomorrow.

We will know more in the coming weeks as to what exactly is going on. Until then he is safe to ride and do all the mischievous things that he enjoys doing.
