Yes your indoor cat still needs dewormer. We just had a recent situation with a cat vomiting worms. Looking back at this cat's records it is indoor only. It had been dewormed twice in 2020, then once in 2021, 2022, and 2023 but 2024 was missed. How does an indoor kitty get worms?? Well some will catch mice in the house but also flies/crickets etc. Also if a new pet comes in and everyone is not dewormed at the same time they can pass them back and forth via grooming. So while indoor cats are definitely lower risk they aren't no risk. Also need to keep in mind that roundworms and tapeworms can cause disease in humans. Pet the kitty and then have a sandwich for example can easily transmit worm eggs. Of course young children who explore the world with fingers and put fingers in mouth are at highest risk. So we always recommend deworming even in indoor kitties yearly.

DISTEMPER OUTBREAK IN RACCOONS PUTS YOUR DOG AT RISK:
The vet med association has put out the following information re distemper outbreak in raccoons around Winnipeg (previously issues in northern communities as well). Note that this is very contagious to dogs and can be fatal or cause lifelong issues but easily preventable by vaccines. Because distemper infected raccoons can be quite aggressive it is important to avoid raccoons and if there is contact to contact authorities at the number listed in the link. Rabies symptoms can look the same so that is why it is extremely important to report and seek medical care for any human and/or pet exposure. Dog's should be vaccinated as puppies at 8, 12 and 16 weeks then get a booster at 1 yr. After that multi-year vaccines can be used. If your dog is not up to date please book an appointment with your vet asap. This is a horrific disease that causes a great deal of suffering before death so please look after your pet!!

The Chief Veterinary Office has received a 43% increase in the number of sick, neurologic and aggressive raccoons causing exposures within Manitoba to date in 2025, as compared to 2024.Leer Más

Just a public service announcement for new clients. We do require prepayment of new appointments via etransfer in full to confirm the appointment. Sadly when a client doesn't pay and steals service I still have to pay my staff and gas and insurance etc and if it happens frequently we won't be available for anyone. Most visits for exam and multiple vaccines in Brandon will be around $300 currently. Sick animals requiring work-up will exceed that. We always send as estimate for you. Thanks, Liana

Client sent me this photo of her little kitten Ivy. Pretty adorable. Poor thing was found abandoned/orphaned and was extremely thin and weak. Due to good home care she is thriving and living her best life now.

A difficult topic.. cremation and urns. Sadly our pets just never seem to live as long as they should and when the time comes there are often questions about after care.

We provide cremation and urns through Peaceful Valley Pet Crematorium. They are a family owned business and we have had great service through Karen and Rob Gardiner and their daughter Cassie (hope I am spelling correctly). We trust them with our own pets. If ashes are returned in a box or urn we know we are getting our pets back as they take great care. As pet lovers they know the importance of this to owner. They send a certificate stating the pet's name as well. They also offer cremation where pets are sprinkled on their land and you can tell from the picture that it is a beautiful spot. They offer several urn choices that are very reasonably priced.

Walking through the kraft show today we also came across a fellow named Ketih Barrett who makes urns out of trees (can even make from a tree cut down on your property). So I thought I'd give him a plug as well as really like supporting local like the Gardiners and him. His email is [email protected] and phone is 727-1761.

So hoping you don't need this but it is nice to have the resources if you do.

Hope you had a good weekend.

Dedicated to the memory of Jed and Cortnie who wrapped their tails around our hearts

Camping with pets: We had hoped to get out camping a bit more this summer but sadly only got out twice. But we enjoyed it thoroughly. We love getting Peanut out on long walks and even got Bones the kitty out walking a bit too. But there is a lot of planning in bringing pets camping. Being sure they don't escape, having a bit of a first aid kit along, bit of extra food in case of delays getting home etc all have to be considered. For us, Bones likes to try to escape so if one person going out the other holds or we throw treats to encourage him away from the door. Have to make sure their flea/heartworm/tick meds all on board for dogs. Lots to consider. What are your pet camping tips?
