Remember the constipated cat we shared about the other day?! Well thankfully that owner had Pet Insurance!!!

Emergency treatment and diagnostics can add up pretty quickly.

Pet insurance is affordable and customizable. It can cover accidents, illnesses, diagnostics, and more! Most importantly though, it can help take the stress out of vet visits!

There are many different companies who provide pet insurance, so make sure to do your research and find the one that best suits you and your pets! Most companies also offer a free trial for puppies and kittens!

Fun Fact: Your cat can get constipated!!

It’s most commonly seen in mature, middle aged cats but can happen at any age! Constipation in felines can be caused by many things such as hairballs, ingestion of a foreign body, dehydration, pelvic injuries and obesity.

It’s important to monitor your cat’s bathroom habits so you can quickly notice any changes in their normal behaviour.

Symptoms to watch for include but are not limited to:
- unsuccessful straining (in or out of litter box)
- crying/meowing in pain
- any passed f***s are minimal, dry and hard
- lethargy/hiding
- reluctance to eat or drink
- vomiting (sometimes)
- diarrhea (weird right?)
- frequently visiting the litter box

If you notice your cat showing any of these signs it’s important to call your regular veterinarian to schedule an appointment.

There are several things your veterinarian might recommend to treat your cat with constipation symptomatically, prior to a full diagnostic work up. Such as, regular hairball control, changing their diet to something with more fluids and fibre, and promoting exercise and/or weight loss.

However if I a cat is severely impacted and/or dehydrated, it may be necessary to hospitalize for fluids, enemas, pain meds, and possible manual removal of f***s.

If cats are impacted for long periods of time this can lead to other complications such as severe dehydration or mega colon which would lead to the animal being hospitalized!

A message to our clients regarding the recent FDA report about Librela.

While it may seem worrying to see a FDA issue about Librela, it is important to remember that this product meets all safety and quality standards set by Health Canada, and that adverse reactions to the drug are rarely reported (less than 10 out of 10,000 dogs treated).

Librela has undergone vigorous testing and has improved the lives of millions of dogs since its release in 2021 (Europe).

Like human health medications, there can be a possibility of adverse events with any medication or injection made for animals, which is why we encourage bloodwork and regular check ups be done for your pet, especially as they get older. While there is no cure for arthritis, Librela has been shown to alleviate arthritis pain for 1 month and improve dogs’ mobility.

We will continue to recommend Librela due to the amount of research that has been done regarding the efficacy and safety, and encourage pet owners to do their own research if needed.

We have no vet on call at this time, so hopefully emergency services will not be needed - but if there are then please remember there are 24 hour emergency vet clinics available in Winnipeg.
