Wishing everyone a warm and happy weekend!
By now most animal lovers are aware of the large number of dogs that were seized by the Winnipeg Humane Society last week.
They were being kept in horrendous conditions, and most of of them required some grooming and vet care. 🩺
While we wish we could go there and help out, our own lives & jobs require us to be where we are. So, what can we do to help out?
Do what you can! ❤️
Wheat City Vet Clinic has donated 50 doses of Canine Distemper Combo Vaccines to the Winnipeg Humane Society specifically for the recent dog seizure.
The Winnipeg Humane Society has also started a fundraising page to cover their costs, and people have been very generous!!
Support Local Animal Rescues (Dogs & Cats)
-Help foster dogs + cats if you can!
-Adopting from rescues.
Do NOT let you dogs + cats have litters and then sell them, especially if the kittens or puppies have unplanned homes! 🐈🐕
This makes you party of the overwhelming problem of pet overpopulation!!!
🐶💕
For all our clients who may travel across the border with their pets, please read!
The US has been tinkering (for the good) with their canine importation rules for the past few years, primarily in response to concerns about importing
Attention 🚨‼️
There will be NO Vet on Friday May 17th!
The Vet clinic will still be open our regular hours for medication and food pick up!💊
We will be closed Monday May 20th, for Victoria Day! ☀️⛱️
Dr. Sherry will not be on call over the long weekend! ☎️
Sorry for the inconvenience.

This week Dr. Sherry has reduced hours of availablity for a variety of reasons.
We are doing our best to accommodate pet emergencies, as well as we can, and we appreciate people’s understanding.
Here’s a reminder of some events that are REAL EMERGENCIES:
- Seizures or breathing difficulties
- Non weight bearing lameness, animal in severe pain

Events that are NOT considered emergencies:

Did you know……
Pregnant female dogs go through a process called nesting? 🪺
What is nesting? Nesting is a primary maternal instinct of an expecting female dog.
In the wild pregnant dogs would select a spot with adequate warmth and shelter and then camouflage their den.
For dogs in captivity, we suggest making a whelping/nesting box. The box should be large enough your dog can comfortably stretch out, in a warm draft-free area.
Some signs of nesting;
- Dragging blankets or beds to a new spot
- Carrying around toys everywhere she goes
- Digging or burrowing into small spaces
- Grooming herself exclusively
Nesting is a common behaviour in many pregnant mothers, including humans! 🤰🐕
Flea and Tick season is already here!
Don’t forget to come and get your flea and tick medications for your four-legged friends! 🐕🐈
Happy Easter Weekend! 🐣🐰
Hope everyone has a wonderful Easter! 💐

🐰
FRIENDLY REMINDER ‼️‼️
We will be closed this Friday, March 29th for Good Friday!!
Please give 24-hour-notice if you are needing any refills before this weekend to avoid a short notice dispensing fee. ⏰💊
We will be open again as usual Monday April 1st. 😁🐰
Happy Friday!! 😁😁We wanted to take a minute to showcase this adorable little lady!🥰
Luna is 6.5 months old, and has an appointment to be spayed and get her final round of vaccinations the end of March.
She came into care at 4 weeks old. She was under weight and very scared and cried for a week straight. After giving her the care and nutrition she needed she came out of her shell and became the sweetest little girl. 😇
Luna has become besties with her chihuahua foster brother and bully foster sister. She has played with numerous different cats and dogs of various ages and sizes with no problems. She loves kids and will chase them around for hours!😸😸
She has been dewormed numerous times (no worms were found). She is squirmy for nail trims but it can easily be done at home with help. She has been wearing soft paws without any issues.
Luna is a very sweet and fluffy gal who loves to play and snuggle. She is litter trained, she knows her name and she eats a mix of kibble and soft food.
If you think you would be a good fit for Luna, please contact us either by phone number or email! ❤️❤️
One week ago, on Friday March 8th, we had our Spring Cat Neuter Day here at Wheat City Vet Clinic. 🐈🐈⬛Also, that day happened to be International Women’s Day! ❤️❤️🏋️♀️
However, that Friday (and the following Monday) we were experiencing severe technical difficulties due to our phone lines being down, which meant we had no access to email, and could not use our debit machines.
As you can imagine, it was a very stressful and frustrating few days, because it’s difficult to run a business like that!! Whew! 😰
Having said that, we still managed to neuter 22 cats (no more baby-making! Yay!) and thank you to everyone for being patient with us. 🐱✂️🐱
I want to send a huge shout out to the wonderful group of women I work with, and congratulate them for doing a tremendous job- both this last week and ALL the time! ❤️❤️
From,
Dr. Sherry Wurtz

If you didn’t happen to see the contest the clinic had during February…🐶🦷🐱
The goal was to guess how many extractions would be done during February, which was our Dental Month, for a chance to win a free exam.
The fun part was we wouldn’t know the answer either till the end of the month!
Well…🥁🥁🥁
We ended up extracting a total of 61 teeth (that definitely needed to be taken out😬) and therefore made 33 dogs and cats feel much more comfortable! 😁😁
Thank you to everyone who participated with their own guesses!
This chilly weather is sure making us just wanna cuddle up inside and be cozy!! 🥶🌬️
Hope everyone is staying warm out there!
Dental Month is already half way over and our February dental month is going strong! 💪🦷
It is very satisfying to help dogs & cats feel better, be more pain free, and have fresher breath after the dental cleaning/extractions that we do! 😊
These two pictures illustrate some of the before & after of a dental cleaning! The blue light helps us visualize the tartar + plaque on the teeth, that way we can make sure we are not missing anything.
Remember! Give your pets healthy things to chew on, because that is how they are brushing their own teeth. We carry a variety of products like; toothpaste, dental wipes, dental treats/chews, etc. 🪥🦴
We hope everyone has a amazing long weekend!! 🥳🥳
Just a reminder‼️‼️
We will be CLOSED on Monday February 19th!
We sure believed in “love at first sniff” today!! 😍🥰
Happy Valentine’s day to all our furry friends and their loving owners! 💝
Hopefully everyone got some extra hugs, kisses, licks, nose rubs, etc. today!! 🐶🐱🐰🐹🦎
In case you haven’t seen our posters around the clinic…
We wanted to make a post reminding our clients about our next cat neuter day coming up on Friday, March 8th!! 🐈🐈🐈
Give us a call if your interested! 🤗🤗
Happy Friday everyone!! 😁😁
We hope everyone had a good week and continues to have a good weekend!
Big smiles at the clinic today! 🐶🐶

We had the pleasure of meeting a very friendly Hedgehog today! 🦔🦔🦔Quite often, hedgehogs are stressed when they are in a vet clinic and end up just curling themselves into a spikey ball! This little guy was quite the opposite fortunately for us! 🤣 Here are some interesting facts about hedgehogs: * A hedgehog has between 5000-7000 quills! Each one lasts about a year before dropping off to make room for more. 😮 * They have very poor eyesight, and rely mostly on small and heating to navigate. 👀 * Hedgehogs got their names from their love of garden hedges and the pig-like grunts they make 🐷 (which are very cute!) * They are largely immune to snake venom and certain poisonous plants. 🌱 * The hedgehog species is one of the oldest surviving mammals. * Baby hedgehogs are called hoglets! #hedgehogs #themoreyouknow
Ever wonder why cats scratch at their ears when they have ear mites? This is why…. I’m scratching just watching them. 🤮 This poor kitten had the mother of all infestations, but we got the ears cleaned and treated and it should be feeling better in a couple days! #earmitesincats #itchy #gross
Keeping with the baby theme, here’s your “awe shucks”, moment of the day! Puppies make the week go faster #babylove #bellyscratches
Now that it’s… warmer kind of, the spring creepy crawly season is here! Also known as Tick season 😕😕🐶🪲 Besides being gross, ticks can carry diseases that we want to avoid (for ourselves and our pets). They are really great meds available for ticks that make them just fall off dead and you don’t have to even look for them! Happy Friday #ticksaregross #nexgard #spectre #bravecto
Environmental enrichment for our indoor cats comes in many forms. They can look out the window and pretend they are “mighty hunters” as in this case. Or it can be something as simple as a card board box with holes cut in it. Or making them play with with a treat ball to get their food/kibbles; instead of putting in just in a dish. Or try one of those snuffle mats or snuffle balls to hide their kibbles in, so they have to hunt. We are selling snuffle mats and snuffle balls made by the lovely people at the MB Great Pyrenees Rescue. They are available for purchase here at the clinic. (P.S they rescue more then just Great Pyrenees dogs! 🐶🐕) However you do it, making sure your indoor kitties have plenty to do and keep them occupied and entertained is super important. Happy cats are healthier and are less prone to peeing issues/accidents, and have less aggression #happycats #borntohunt #pidgeondreams #lionking
