This is a big deal, in an unregulated trade this means a lot. As a salon, we have been certifying for over 8 years. Alyssa and I proved ourselves this year by nailing our Master Stylist titles. This means that we have put in the work and the continued education to back the reputation of having the highest title. It was a long road and it wasn’t easy but it shows.. in the professionalism of the shop, in our knowledge and skills and in the success of guiding an entire team of amazing groomers! I’m so proud of each and every one of us for being the best!
We talk a lot about being certified so I thought I’d give you a run down of what that entails.
The Canadian Professional Pet Stylists certifies canine groomers to a national standard in an unregulated trade through exceedingly challenging levels that are judged by varying industry leaders. There is very little room for error, however every certification event boasts an opportunity for growth and that alone is worth it.
The process starts with the Bather Technician and Double Coat Technician levels, this is where we are tested on our knowledge of skin and coat health, preparation of coat, anatomy, understanding of the tools we use, first aid, handling and endurance. Each consisting of a timed practical and a timed 100 question written test, you must get over 85% on each to move on to the next level.
Next is the Intermediate Stylist level. This level is proving you can do a proper, balanced haircut on any dog in 1 hour along with a 100 question timed test on the knowledge of the 5 basics of grooming (head, feet, ears, body and tail), anatomy, terminology, coat types, etc. This level isn’t necessary to move you on to Masters but I think it’s a perfect stepping stone to Level 2.
Level 2 consists of breed specific haircuts and a complete understanding of all appropriate breed standards. There are 4 breed groups: Sporting, Non Sporting, Long Legged Terriers, Short Legged Terriers. Basically you must be able to recognize and have an understanding of each breed in the specific breed group and specialize in 4 breeds that you must know inside and out, as well as be able to set the proper lines on. The 100 question written tests and hands on practicals are timed and you must get over 85% to move onto Level 3.
(My Level 2 Roster:
Non Sporting-Bichon Frise.
Sporting-Cocker Spaniel.
LL Terrier: Miniature Schnauzer.
SL Terrier: Westie.)
The level 3 Masters test is a gruelling 500+ question timed written exam covering the recognition and standards of the last 4 breed groups (Herding, Working, Hound, Toy) along with, additional information on the 4 previous breed group standards, an in-depth understanding of canine anatomy, terminology and first aid information. Basically by working up to and passing the Master Stylist exam, you will be able to identify and have an understanding of all 187 breeds recognized by the CKC inside and out plus a ton of additional information. You will have the knowledge and skills to maintain a career in an ever changing industry.
By now we are a wealth of information and we’d love to talk dog with you! 😊 🐾 727-DOGS

Stylists- Kayla & Alyssa both Canadian Professional Pet Stylist Level 3 Master Stylists.
As far as I know we are the only Master Pet Stylists in the area. (If I am wrong reach out we love chatting to other Pet pros).
I told Kayla I wanted to make a post about our achievement and she said it best. She said, “I am proud of us, but I am really proud at the groomers that also stand around us.”
Sometimes we talk about old patterns that we used to set on dogs and it’s always a bit funny. Going through this process one of the biggest thing we have gained is an eye for solid workmanship. The coolest thing is that when the staff that works around us test we are seeing them fly through because we are able to provide a stronger level of training than we initially had access to.
Thanks to for giving groomers in Manitoba the opportunity to level up.
Dropping your dog off to in an unregulated industry is daunting. Although standardized testing is voluntary you can rest assured that you are bringing your best friend to qualified professionals at Grasslands.
Note: Alyssa is not accepting new clients.
Kayla takes on a few more every fall and is leaving a bit of space in her daily schedule to take new clients bc she is smart like that. 🙂 This is your chance to get on her books.
