Steamed tilapia 🐟 is on the menu for the fur-kids in our house today, bones and skin removed.
Tilapia is low in fat, high in protein and a good source of potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, selenium and vitamin D. It's a great source of Omega-3 fatty acids which is a natural anti-inflammatory and supports heart and brain health. Since most diets are deficient in Omega-3s, this is a great regular treat. Other low mercury fish are salmon, trout, cod, sole, sardines, shrimp, oysters, catfish, and shellfish like shrimp, scallops, and crab meat.
Everything in moderation, sourcing is important.

Please take that extra minute to make noise around your car before starting it. A remote starter is a great option for us but doesn't give a cat even a second to get out of a car engine before being seriously if not tragically injured - consider honking your horn a few times to startle them and give them a chance to get out. If you use a block heater it's a prime space for them to keep warm. These are preventable injuries. Taking that extra minute will save a cat's life.

Temperatures are plummeting, here's some important information to keep in mind 🐾

01/20/2025

If it's cold for us, it's cold for them 🥶🐾
We are experiencing minus double digits plus the wind chill making it feel even colder. Please keep your animal companions inside with you where it's safe and warm.

There are many hazards to safeguard against including:
*Hypothermia & Frost Bite ⚠️
*Antifreeze ⚠️
*Rodent Poison ⚠️
*Ice melters ⚠️
*Cars ⚠️

When temperatures drop below 0°C animals are at risk. Having fur doesn't mean they don't feel the cold. Frost bite on paws, ears, tails and faces can happen in under 30 minutes. Hypothermia is a life-threatening emergency as animals don't dry in cold temperatures - this can quickly lead to death.
Oftentimes cats and dogs who cannot find shelter are not out in the open, therefore not obvious to everyone. They are often hunkered down in bushes, close to the exterior walls of homes, in window wells, cats may be in the engines or wheel wells of our cars - anywhere they can try to find some type of shelter and respite from the cold. If you find an animal outdoors who are coming to windows and doors for help please extend them some protection and kindness and provide shelter for them in a safe, clean garage, spare room, bathroom or a properly insulated cat shelter out of the elements - outdoor shelters should be filled with straw, not hay or blankets. Have animals checked at the local Vet clinic or by a local Rescue for a microchip and their health status, post them on social media and approach neighbours to see if they belong to anyone. It takes the whole community to protect the vulnerable.

Small animals need daily love and attention too. These guinea pigs are so content, listen to those happy squeaks!
Don't forget to arrange care for them if you're going to be away from home for a few days.

This is a very important pet safety message:
This pet bed at first glance looks very cozy, however, it can quickly become a suffocation risk for kittens, puppies, senior animals - any animal who could potentially have mobility or strength limits. We have to ensure the same safety measures are in place that we would for human infants. Please be aware 🐾

Further to our previous post, indoor enrichment is so important for our animal companions. The sounds and visual enrichment provided by simply turning on your tv to content designed for animals is enriching and there's so many options!
If you happen to have squirrels outside your window that you maybe feeding your cats are enjoying watching, keep their gut microbiomes in mind when feeding them:
Peanuts are legumes, not nuts, and are high in fat, which can make squirrels obese, and can harbor aflatoxins (poisonous mold).
Sunflower seeds provide poor nutritional value as does corn, which can also harbour aflatoxins.

Healthy options for squirrels (birds will likely come to enjoy as well):
Nuts in the shell: Almonds, walnuts, hazelnuts, pecans, and acorns are all good options.
Sunflower seeds: Sparingly, you can feed squirrels sunflower seeds, but avoid pine nuts, which can cause calcium loss.
Vegetables: You can feed squirrels vegetables like broccoli, carrots, peas, yellow squash, and zucchini.
Calcium: You can provide squirrels with a piece of deer antler to chew on as a source of calcium.
Variety: Offer a variety of nuts and seeds, and add in some healthy snacks in moderation and after washing like apples, berries, peaches, grapes, bananas and carrots.
Clean feeders: Keep feeders clean to prevent squirrels from picking up diseases.
Feed squirrels all year round.

We are seeing a lot of posts about lost/missing cats, about cats being found outside, DOA hit by car posts and some commenting that even though the temperatures outside are frigid and there are many dangers for cats outdoors they don't know how to keep them in the house. We are all about having indoor cats with Catio access and researching and providing indoor enrichment, cats need mental and physical stimulation. There are so many informative sites online loaded with indoor enrichment ideas for inside your home. These links below are filled with information about how to transition cats to using a Catio and free building plans for all spaces and budgets. There's a few months before the Spring temperatures come along, which allows plenty of time to plan a Catio build!

Before adding diffusers, scented plug-ins, essential oils, scented candles, liquid potpourri, and warmers to your home, owners of cats, dogs and/or birds should use extreme caution and be aware - there is a toxicity risk to your animal companions 🐾

Prevention is the best medicine in limiting essential oil toxicities through Oral, Inhalation and Dermal Exposure. The most common clinical signs include drooling, vomiting, lethargy, anorexia, respiratory, dermal, mucus membrane irritation, collapse.

Cats lack an essential enzyme in their liver making it difficult to metabolize and eliminate essential oils. Their natural grooming behaviour also places them at further risk for both dermal and oral exposures. Dogs do not have the same enzyme deficiency as cats; however, they can still be at risk from exposure to essential oils. Dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, and hamsters may be more sensitive with dermal exposure due to their increased risk of oral exposure via grooming. Birds are more likely to suffer respiratory effects than other animals due to their specialized respiratory system.

If it's cold for us, it's cold for them 🥶🐾
We are experiencing minus double digits plus the wind chill making it feel even colder. Please keep your animal companions inside with you where it's safe and warm. When the temperatures are this cold, quick potty breaks on leash are best for dogs to protect them from quick onset of frost bite to paw irritation from salt melters to getting lost and losing their scent in the snow. Cats don't need to be outside at all. Increase indoor enrichment to replace mental and physical activity.
