Cats have backward facing spines covering their tongues called filiform papillae, lovingly referred to as sandpaper tongue. Their purpose is to aid in grooming, drinking and eating prey. These spines make it extremely difficult for cats and kittens to spit out string, yarn, tape, ribbon, twine, dental floss, needle & thread, hair ties, elastics, etc. that they want to play with and chew. Once these types of items are in their mouths it's typically too late because these items are caught on their tongues, and at that point there's only one direction they can go - down their throat. These become choking risks and linear foreign bodies causing blockages and can cause internal tears from the throat down into the intestines, requiring surgical removal and repair, if possible. Please be mindful of this at home, being diligent to ensure these items are either tossed out or put away very safely out of reach and when buying cat toys, they should be avoided. Toys like these can also snap off and break into smaller pieces.
During play kittens/cats can also get entangled causing serious injury. Please, if you're going to have toys like this, play should always be supervised and these toys inspected for weak areas after play and put away out of reach when kittens/cats are unsupervised.

These Emergencies are far too common, many people aren't aware of them but should be.
Add to these Heat Stroke, Heat Exhaustion and Water Intoxication, especially with temps soaring 🌡️
Let's all keep our animals cool and safe 🐾

Between the weather extremes, predators, bugs and parasites, boredom, and loneliness,
these things seem like common sense, don't they? Even more common sense - don't keep your rabbits outside.
Supervised and safe free roaming time in your home helps them to bond with you and the other animals that are now part of their family 🐰

Flystrike is more common in summer🐰 🪰

As the weather gets warmer, it's important to be extra vigilant when it comes to insects in your rabbits' enclosure. Flystrike is a condition that’s caused by flies laying eggs in your rabbits’ fur. These eggs then hatch and grow into maggots that burrow into your rabbits' skin and eat the flesh.

Not only is it painful and extremely unpleasant for rabbits and their owners, but it can also be life-threatening if not spotted and treated quickly. All rabbits can be at risk of developing flystrike, but it's particularly risky if they have a dirty bottom, open wounds, or live in a dirty environment.

Fortunately, it's easy to prevent flystrike by:

- Keeping your rabbits' home clean, clean up p*e and poo at lease once a day.
- Checking your rabbits daily.
- Feeding them a good diet to prevent their poo from sticking to their bottoms.
- Giving them space to exercise, overweight rabbits are more likely to struggle to clean themselves which can attract flies.
- Grooming long-haired rabbits regularly to stop dirt getting matted in their fur.
- Monitoring any wounds closely and keeping them clean and dry while they heal.
- Taking them for regular vet checks to stay ahead of any hidden health problems.

Happy Canada Day 🇨🇦🍁

06/30/2025

Fireworks are terrifying for animals and will be set off every night throughout the long weekend, starting tonight. Plan ahead for future holidays and work on some behavior modification techniques that will help.

*Please exercise and play with your fur-kids during the day to tucker them out.

*Keep your cats safely inside. If you can't stay at home with your furry family members, be sure to leave your dog at home too. There's no need to have dogs and cats outside exposed to a frightening experience.

*Take your dogs out on leash if potty breaks are needed in the evening. A scared dog can escape a fenced yard - don't leave them out there.

*Close windows and blinds to block out sights and sounds of fireworks. A scared animal can easily bust through a screen.

*Turn on fans, play soft ambient music, play with food puzzles.

*Calming pheromone diffusers (Adaptil for dogs, Feliway for cats) in the room that they spend the most time or if possible, throughout the home are a great addition to decreasing stress. You may need to discuss calming medications to have on hand to give your animal companions when there will be known times of stress.

*Provide a safe indoor environment for your pets during fireworks, thunderstorms and construction - even better if you stay with them. Remember that our animal companions look to us for guidance, be sure lead by example by staying calm and relaxed.

*As extra precautions, ensure gates are shut and locked and microchip information is up to date.

I’ve heard of a few possible cases of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (RMSF) in dogs in Ontario in the past week. It's pretty preliminary information, but

It's Rabbit Awareness Week 🐰
This years theme is Happy Hoppy Homes!
If you are considering adding rabbits to your indoor family, please do a lot of research. These are not animals that are a good choice to be a 'pet for children', they are not meant to be alone, kept in cramped cages and forgotten about. Rabbits are very social, loving and require safe gentle handling, a lot of nutritious food, cleaning up after, love and enrichment.

There's something magical and heartwarming when the animals we are caring for are truly happy to see us even though we aren't Mom or Dad. Lena is now meeting us at the door for our visits 💕

We are under a multi-day heat advisory 🌞🌡️and unfortunately, reminders are needed for safe care for our animal companions.
*Never leave animals in the car, it takes only minutes for temperatures to rise dangerously to life-threatening levels. The AC only cools when the vehicle is moving, at a standstill it is no longer doing its job of consistently cooling the air inside the car. Even with windows cracked open, cars will quickly become deathtraps.
*High humidity increases the risk of heat stroke.
*Activity levels need to be restricted during heat advisories. Keep cats indoors & early morning and late night dog walks only to prevent paw burns from contact with hot sidewalks, pavement or sand; sunburn; dehydration; heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
*Keep pets cool and hydrated with frozen pet treats and fresh, clean, cool water and a primarily wet food diet. Hydration is key💧
